"It's often difficult for those who are lucky enough to have never experienced what true depression is to imagine a life of complete hopelessness, emptiness and fear."
-Susan Polis Schutz
Ok Facebook, it's about to get real. If you don't have something nice to say, please kindly follow the red signs and flashing lights that will lead you to the "unfriend" button!
How can someone that has been lucky enough to live a life without continuous pain, judge someone that sees nothing but sandess and dark clouds all day?
How could someone that has the privlidge to remember what it feels like to be happy, better yet, KNOW on a daily basis, have the right to stigmatize someone that hasn't felt true joy in years?
How is this okay? Why is the stigma still alive and well? Why do we only get UNCOMFORTABLE when we talk about mental illness? Yet every last one of you uncomfortable people say things like "I just wish they would have reached out to me" after they die at their own hands.
You are so lucky, and you don't even realize it. You don't see through your own lame excuses and generic "hope you feel better soon!" To be able to be so blissfully ignorant....I literally dream of feeling that way again & I assure you I am not alone.
We are your mothers & fathers, your sisters & brothers. We are EVERY day people, just like you....or at least we once were. We watch the world go by outside. We see the days turn to night and we see our lives morphing in to something we never thought they would be. We experience a darkness that could never be put in to words. Don't even get me started on the self loathing.
Why don't you want to help us? Why is it okay to ignore a friend or family member, slowly becoming a glimmer of who they once were? Does it make you UNCOMFORTABLE?! I'm so sorry, but I'm really, REALLY fucking uncomfortable every day....
But society says to sweep it under the rug- so we do. Because that's what good little depressed boys and girls do, right?
If you think this sounds harsh, stop contributing to the stigma. Research ways you can help. Learn how to talk to someone with depression...and NO-- "going out for a bit with the girls/guys." WILL NOT solve a battle I've been fighting for 5 years now. It won't. I promise.

I just realized something You know how your house can sometimes get hectic and you just wish for some solitude? No children, no friends, maybe no parents even(depending on your circumstances). Just some quiet time to yourself. In your home. ALONE! We’ve all been there, right? Well tonight I ended up working on a DIY project and stayed up significantly later than anyone else in my home. I realized it was very similar to being alone, the only difference is I have to be quiet. Then it hit me.
This is so much better than complete solitude. I’m still in my home, I’m doing something I love by myself…except now I’m surrounded by the people I love most. They’re all safe, they’re all comfortable and they’re sleeping peacefully (even the dog!). I don’t think that there is any better peace of mind than that. The most important people in your life are with you, yet you still get some peace & quiet to do something you love.
I suffer from mental illness and this was a HUGE sign that my recovery is working
