Cannabis Tax Revenue Provides Ten Times More Scholarship Money

When it comes to the social and legal climate of Cannabis in North America, it's clear that the state of Colorado is really leading the way. The latest step they've taken is using tax revenue for the world's first scholarships that are supported by cannabis sales. Certain counties in the state have a large number of families that don't have enough income to help their children further their education, however Pueblo and Adams County are looking to change that.

The taxes on alcohol and lottery sales are what support most of the scholarships in the U.S., however the 2% tax on cannabis is expected to generate ten times more than what the country provided last year in scholarship assistance. Now each high school graduate can qualify for a $1000 grant towards a local two-year community college, it's as easy as filling out the application - no strings attached.  

The Canadian government has been doing some pretty amazing things in recent years to help people further their education, but with tax revenue from cannabis sales it's clear that we could do so much more. Marijuana Use Potentially Prevents and Treats Alzhheimers

In recent years there have been quite a few studies that investigate the potential use of medical marijuana in combating Alzheimer's Disease, however researchers at the Salk Institute think that they might be the first to have discovered that cannabinoids actually remove Amyloid Beta protein build up in the brain. Amyloid is a toxic protein that accumulates in the brain over many years before the onset of Alzheimer's, and in some cases the protein can build up for decades. “It is likely that the accumulation of intracellular aggregated protein in the brain occurs throughout life, contributes to cognitive aging, and may also be involved in the initiation of many old age-associated diseases,” said the researchers in the study.

The body's Endocannabinoid System (named after the cannabis plant) produces natural cannabinoids that help to prevent inflammation, nerve damage, and a plethora of other things. "Inflammation within the brain is a major component of the damage associated with Alzheimer's disease, but it has always been assumed that this response was coming from immune-like cells in the brain, not the nerve cells themselves," said postdoctoral researcher Antonio Currais. "When we were able to identify the molecular basis of the inflammatory response to amyloid beta, it became clear that THC-like compounds that the nerve cells make themselves may be involved in protecting the cells from dying."

The latest studies on amyloid beta protein suggest that THC could also help remove toxins in the brain similar to how the body's natural endocannabinoids preform. If toxic amyloid beta protein builds up over years or in some cases, decades, the significant role that cannabinoids play in maintaining healthy cells could possibly indicate that taking precautions earlier in life such as regular cannabis use (or THC intake of any form) may actually be a good idea. However the researchers at Salk Institute emphasized that their study is in the preliminary stages and there still needs to be testing done outside of the laboratory. But if you're looking for concrete facts, exercising also increases the body's production of natural cannabinoids. If cannabinoids battle Alzheimer's, then that means exercising would also help fight the disease.

Surprise Edibles Could Land You In Jail!

Cannabis edibles truly come in all shapes and sizes. Some barely have any THC content at all, whereas others have the ability to put you on the couch for the next couple hours. When people talk about their edible adventures you usually hear one of two things: they didn't really feel it, or they really felt it and it lasted quite some time. With the latter being quite the significant experience, one would think that you'd inform someone of what they were getting into before eating a cannabis infused treat, however it seems like a couple elderly men just didn't get the memo.

A 70-year old man from Florida thought he was doing a kind deed when he shared his cannabis cookies with a hungry female friend. However, because he didn't think the cannabis content would be enough to affect her, he decided to keep the secret ingredient a secret. This begs me to ask, why bother baking a batch of cannabis cookies that wouldn't be strong enough to do anything other than satisfy a snack session? But I digress. 

Shorty after eating the cookies the woman started to feel woozy and ended up being transported to a nearby medical center. I think we all know by now that you can't overdose on cannabis, so needless to say the woman ended up being fine, however the 70-year old man faced three felonies: possession of marijuana more than twenty grams, possession with intent to distribute, and reckless tampering with a product with the risk of injury or death. 

The woman was eventually released from her medical care, the man was released on his on recognizance and they went their separate ways. He also hasn't been able to be reached for comment - go figure.

But this isn't the only case of an elderly man with good intentions giving surprise edibles to people! Shona's Story: Cannabis and Crohn's Disease

To put it simply, Crohn's disease is an ongoing condition that causes severe inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, also known as the digestive tract. It can affect anywhere between the mouth to the bowels, however most patients with Crohn's disease experience it within the lower part of the small intestine. The symptoms are extremely unpleasant and can include pain, ulcers, fatigue, diarrhea, loss of appetite, etc. Unfortunately experts are still unsure as to what exactly causes Crohn's disease and how to avoid and prevent it altogether, however in recent years more and more doctors and scientists are confirming that medical cannabis products can be a very effective treatment.

Meet Shona, a young woman who was severely stricken with Crohn's to the point where she was bedridden. She had suffered through all the different symptoms and continued to suffer despite a plethora of prescribed medications, finding only a little bit of relief from vaporizing cannabis. Shona was losing weight rapidly due to developing Cachexia, the wasting away caused by Crohn's disease, because her gastrointestinal tract wouldn't absorb any nutrients from whatever she tried to eat. After multiple surgeries and over a dozen different pharmaceuticals the doctors told Shona that there was nothing more that they could do; she was waiting to die.

Until she saw Rick Simpson's online documentary Run For The Cure - the story of a remarkable man who cured his own skin cancer using cannabis oil. However, Shona lived in the medical cannabis-unfriendly state of Kansas and had no idea how she would acquire a pound of cannabis and produce the oil. Not too long after one day when Shona was vaping to ease her pain, her ex-husband happened to notice little specs of cannabis reside on the inside of her vaporizer. They decided to try scraping it off and putting it into empty pill capsules for Shona to take, and after a few days of home made cannabis oil capsules she was able to walk again, eat again, sleep easily, and most importantly Shona began putting on weight. It wasn't long before Shona was able to discontinue all her prescriptions, however the state of Kansas doesn't recognize the medical uses of marijuana. Shona's son tried to speak up at school about how THC oil saved her life during a discussion about the dangers of marijuana, but the school called the authorities and Shona's house was raided of all marijuana and paraphernalia used to create her cure. She was charged with multiple misdemeanors and felonies and her son was taken by CPS agents. Custody was granted to her ex-husband, however Shona was released on bail raised by cannabis activists and is now filing a lawsuit against the city and county officials.

To support Shona and the use of her home made Crohn's cure, share the blog on your feed or with a loved one. We are way overdue for legalization and decriminalization and the proof of medical marijuana's health benefits are everywhere. The more we demand it, the sooner change will come.
