Pokémon Genlocke: LeafGreen Part 1
We begin our Generation Nuzlocke with the remakes of the first generation: FireRed and LeafGreen. For this one, I’m going to do LeafGreen for no particular reason other than green is my favorite color.
Starting off in our bedroom which is the entire upstairs (seriously, where does our mom sleep?) I decided to waste no time and went straight for the tall grass, prompting Professor Oak to immediately rescue me from the threat of wild Pokémon. Leaving unanswered the question of how anyone ever leaves town, I chose Bulbasaur as my starter (last digit zero, my choice!) and named him Seed.
Get your mind out of the gutter, I named him Seed both in reference to Leech Seed which I expect to get a lot of use from, and Seed from Suikoden II (mainly the former).
I wiped the floor with Blue’s Charmander in spite of some seriously unnecessary tutorials (seriously if you think modern games are condescending, you forgot FireRed and LeafGreen) and then saved to check his nature and IVs and... eh. Timid nature (+Speed -Attack) isn’t the worst in a pre-split Gen, but his IVs just... lol.
Maybe that Attack IV helped me win the rival battle I guess? idk. Anyway, onto Viridian City to pick up Oak’s parcel, fighting a Pidgey along the way. Came back, delivered the parcel, got the Dex and some balls, and the Nuzlocke was officially on.
I went ahead for my first catch on Route 1, and thankfully I got a Pidgey rather than a Rattata. I caught it and named her “The Birb” because I managed to get Matchbox Twenty’s “The Burn” stuck in my head that morning. I grinded up a few levels for the team, and went ahead to Route 22 for my second catch, a Mankey I named RonnieBell in honor of one of my favorite Suikoden 1 characters, the giant woman. (slightly NSFW).
Incidentally, The Birb has a decent nature (Careful; +Sp Def -Sp Atk) as does RonnieBell (Brave; +Atk - Spd) but both have IV spreads that give good IVs to their unused attack stat while their good attack stat has a poor IV)
So this is where we stand after our initial start. Two decent ‘mons plus our starter. Next up, catching a Pokémon on Route 2 and leveling up the team for our second rival battle.

Pokémon Genlocke Rules
I’m going to try a Pokémon Generations Nuzlocke for Generations 1-5 (using remakes for Gens 1 and 2) and liveblog it here. Here are the rules I’m going to be following. These are also the Nuzlocke rules I follow in general. Any rules specific to a particular game will be in their own post.
Basic Nuzlocke Rules:
1. Only the first Pokémon encountered in each route, cave, or building may be caught. Different floors of a cave/etc. the same area. (Exceptions below) 2. If a Pokémon faints, it is considered dead and must be placed in a “graveyard” box. 3. Each Pokémon must be nicknamed. If a nickname is accidentally skipped, it should be assigned via the name rater or Pokégen as soon as possible.
Genlocke Rules:
4. Once the Elite Four is defeated, the survivors will be bred and the eggs transferred/injected into the next game once trading would be available. 5. Male Pokémon will be bred with a Ditto with random IVs. Female Pokémon may be bred with a compatible Pokémon if one exists on the team or in the box, or may be bred with a Ditto. No Eggs Pokémon will have an egg injected.
Other Rules:
6. (Duplicates clause) If the first Pokémon encountered in area has been caught, it may be defeated or escaped from and the next Pokémon encountered may be caught instead. This extends to other members of an evolutionary tree (e.g. a Pidgeotto may be skipped if a Pidgey has been caught), and may be repeated indefinitely. 7. (Shiny clause) If a shiny Pokémon is encountered, it may be caught regardless of other rules. 8. (HM clause) If an HM is required to progress and no Pokémon can use that move, a Pokémon may be caught or used from the graveyard exclusively to use that HM. It may not be used in battle and must be released/returned to the graveyard if another Pokémon that can use that HM is caught. 9. In-game trades may be committed as long as the asked-for Pokémon is owned. They do not count against the one-per-area rule. 10. Static encounters do not count against the one-per-area rule. This is because they are often legendaries and difficult to catch without a Master Ball or risking one or more deaths. 11. “Free” Pokémon from NPCs may be received but count against the one-per-area rule. (e.g. may get the Eevee in Celadon City or a Game Corner Pokémon, but not both). 12. Games will be run through the Universal Pokémon Randomizer to activate certain hacks (fixing impossible evolutions, lowercase names for pre-Gen 5, National Dex at start). 13. Starter Pokémon will be determined by the last digit of the Trainer ID. 1-3: Grass type, 4-6: Fire type, 7-9: Water type, 0: my choice.
