As an artist, what about a scene in fiction grabs your attention and makes you want to convey it in an illustration?

Thank you, wonderful Key, who gave me so much inspiration that it was enough not only to enable me to draw again, but also to be able to even answer this question because now I have so many PLANS and PROJECTS and so much FUN and INTEREST and... well, you get it :) You are the best <3

It is actually very rare that A SCENE grabs my attention. Usually I would be into the whole work so much that I’d want to draw at least something for it. It would be like an itch, a feeling that I so want to do something more about it that I can’t stop with just reading and even rereading it.  So let’s say the work is already very inspiring and I like it a lot, and I got this itch. The process of choosing a scene for me to draw is actually much more clinical than one may think.

Here I need to put in a tiny disclaimer that I have some level of aphantasia (probably due to high myopia), so I can’t easily visualize things: everything is blurred unless I try harder and force myself to see some details, which I normally don’t :D However, I have a somewhat experienced hand that luckily just knows what to draw, so usually I keep sketching until the shape of the sketch fully aligns with the blurred image in my mind.

Because of this problem, the scene has to have:

A clear description of postures of the characters, and better if they are just before / right in the middle / just after some action-ish interaction.

A clear (or at least some) description of clothes (I have no knowledge of or interest in fashion, so dressing characters from scratch is always very difficult for me)

A clear description of the background and foreground

So, everything here starts with “a clear description of…” :D If one of the points is missing the other two have to be strong enough to compensate for it.

However, it has happened a few times that a single scene grabbed my attention. I think it happens when the author magically describes a scene or location which I have already imagined on my own before. It is very rare and now that I compare the scenes, they all include a very solid build up in terms of the description of the surroundings and happen closer to the second half of the narration for the scene. So looks like it has more to do with the graphical description of the atmosphere and the location rather than with what the characters do. The images of the scenes immediately pop up in my head unprompted and are much less blurred than what I’m used to, which melts my heart right on the spot.

So far I have not illustrated any of these scenes, but all of them are there, waiting in line in my head together with a list of about 20 other works across WinTeam and Wangxian that I would love to illustrate in one way or another.

I was so so so happy to read this that it took me some time to even come up with words to respond. Thank you so much!! It warms my heart that someone is enjoying the comic. Thank you for reaching out to tell me this <3 I surely don't plan to stop and will continue for a long long time. There are 39 (including interludes) more chapters to go, so... :D The next scene is going to be the first interlude (Ting's), and three new characters are going to be introduced there, so it may take some time because of character design that's still in process. If you have not, I highly recommend you do it right away! If you are like me and are slightly intimidated by massive crossovers, I assure you there is nothing to fear in this case. If you are familiar with the characters from Until We Meet Again / Between Us, SOTUS, Kiss: the Series / Dark Blue Kiss, My Engineer, Theory of Love and Ingredients, you will have an extra layer of fun as you read. However, even if you don’t know anything about them, reading MUSE is still going to be an enormously enjoyable journey. Give it a try ;)
