SPOILERS
This one was just weird for me, and probably my least favorite in the series. Rose goes to Russia to hunt Dimitri, which makes sense and all, because he said he would rather die than be an undead nightmare. Me too, guy, I get where you're coming from. But she's 18 and she's in love for the first time, and there is no way she isn't going to hesitate. And she does and then she becomes her own worst nightmare, but it's even more twisted because she's a blood whore to a Strigoi. I mean, I know they don't actually have sex and scary Dimitri uses it like a bargaining chip, but still, close enough. The only parts of this that I think I actually enjoyed were:
Sydney & The Alchemists (It was cool that humans were sort of involved in the Moroi world, even if they think all vampires/hybrids are evil)
Rose met her dad (and didn't even know it, and he wasn't sent by anyone, he was just looking out for her)
The Belikov Family (Yeva was the best witch-grandma)
Oksana & Mark (Progressive Moroi/dhampir couple AND they're spirit-user/shadow-kissed)
Also, Avery was a bitch and I didn't like her at all through the entire book. It felt like she was a cheap fill-in Rose, so I was kind of glad when she turned out to be a bad guy.
And now Rose and Lissa have a harebrained plan to try to find a guy who possibly healed a Strigoi... and he's Victor Dashkov's brother. Somehow, I knew that old man's tale wasn't through.

SPOILERS
I was pretty excited about the field experience thing, and it was kind of a dead give-away to me that they weren't going to pair Rose with Lissa. Like, dude there is still a chance that you might not be her guardian. And then Richelle was like "let's throw some ghosts in there", and initially I was kind of like, "wait, what?" but after it's explained as part of the shadow-kissed phenomena, I thought "Makes sense." And then she gave Rose, like, internal Strigoi-dar, and now I feel like maybe Rose is a little OP. I mean, she was already good looking, could probably throw Jason Mamoa on the ground, and now she has two paranormal abilities? I feel like her plate might be a little full. The secret society-compulsion ring was pretty standard snot-nosed rich kid behavior, but worse because they were torturing their potential members (but I guess when you can wield magic that would be typical hazing, huh?). And this is probably the point where a lot of people will disagree with me on, but I just felt like there wasn't enough of Rose and Dimitri's relationship documented for them to be in love and then have sex. It just felt rushed to me, maybe because it's only been like 5 or 6 months since they met, or because their written interactions are few and far between? I don't know, it just felt kind of... meh to me. (But what do I know, Bella and Edward fell in love in like 6 weeks or something) The attack on the school was interesting because Christian and Rose fucking dominated the battlefield. Offensive magic just makes sense, and the fact that there is even a debate about it when you could literally save your life if you can just roast a Strigoi in less than 60 seconds, is pretty damn silly to me. Even though I'm still mad that Mason was murdered, he was absolutely the hero of the book in this one. Annnnnnnddddd now Dimitri's Strigoi, and Rose is dropping out of school to go end him. Should be interesting.

WOW. Just wow. Richelle Mead, why’d you have to do my man Mason like that? If I hadn’t been at work, I probably would have cried. Instead, I said “No fucking way” really loud, and my coworker was extremely concerned, but then laughed when I told him one of my favorite characters had just brutally and swiftly been murdered. It was, in my opinion, FUCKED UP, but I’m biased where Mason is concerned (I definitely did NOT remember him dying). Rose was a little whiny in this one, kind of the way I felt about Lissa in the first book, but i guess with all the annoying crap she was putting up with, I’d probably be a little whiny, too. And speaking of Lissa, she was practically absent the whole time. I mean, I get it, her and Christian were off making heart eyes at one another; I do actually really enjoy their relationship. I adored Tasha Ozera at first and then became slightly less adoring when there was a possibility that Dimitri might run off with her (not really run off, but you know what I mean). Obviously, he was going to say no in the end, there’s four more books and Rose and Dimitri are the main love story, but still, it put a little chip on Rose’s shoulder, so therefore one was also on my own. Also, what the fuck is even Adrian Ivashkov’s whole deal? I kind of guessed that he was a spirit user before they even said so, but he’s still really freaking weird. Not exactly sure how I feel about him yet. I don’t really remember anything specific from book three, so this should be fun. Richelle Mead don’t break my heart again.
P.S. I’m not sure if I hate Mia anymore... hmmmmmm

I know that Zoey Deutch isn’t Turkish/Irish as described in the books, but to me, she is Rose Hathaway. And Rose is by far my favorite character in this series. She’s funny, smart, and gorgeous: what’s not to love? I am smitten by her non-relationship relationship with Dimitri (as of the first book in the series) and cannot wait to devour more stolen moments between them. I love her undying devotion to Lissa, and that she would tear the world apart to keep her safe. I also love her fierceness and her take-no-shit attitude. I kind of feel bad that she doesn’t have any romantic feelings for Mason, though, because I kind of love him, but I understand that Dimitri is “the one”.

So, in honor of two things: first being that I never actually finished this series all the way through, and secondly because there is now going to be a television series, I’ve begun reading the Vampire Academy series again. And I honestly can’t remember why I stopped halfway through in the first place, years ago. This one was such an easy read, even working 12 hours days, I finished it in two and a half days. I don’t know if it’s because Rose and I have similar personality traits, but it’s super easy to immerse myself in the story, which is probably how I demolished this first book with very little leisure time on my hands. I vaguely remember book two having something to do with a ski trip, so I’m excited to dive into that. All in all, 5/5 so far in this series.
