Today I was talking to my brother about history, sort of all over the place, but it somehow that landed us on a tangent wherein he said the phrase "I feel like it would be like fucking a bologna sandwich" and we laugh and then he says "actually me and [other brother] were talking about this earlier,"

So I say "about which would be the worst sandwich to fuck???" And he's like "No you fucking idiot" but I feel like based on his wording that was the logical conclusion

i can't decide if anthy is too smart for utena or if utena is too dumb/ignorant for anthy.🤔

i don't think it's really either - i think anthy is already privy to a ton of information that utena doesn't have. it's not for lack of trying or knowing that something's up that utena is oblivious - she repeatedly hints that she wants anthy to help her out and tell her what's wrong, because she knows anthy is keeping something from her, but she doesn't have the context to understand what. she even passive aggressively pokes at anthy about her closed-offedness in one of the post credits

in ep 37 she understands when anthy is acting passive aggressively toward her (with the toast 'theft' from chu-chu) and that anthy pretends everything's fine even when she's mad at utena (at the window scene), and later shows that she has no problem picking up on anthy's poison metaphor and answering in kind. in the balcony scene, finally given context by anthy, she instantly figures out how her girlprincing was wrong without anthy even bringing that up. anthy and utena aren't polar opposites - they can communicate w each other in this more underhanded way, this sort of language they share

but utena's a kid that's being manipulated & information that the audience is provided access to is intentionally withheld from her, so she Wouldn't have the understanding that the audience does to connect the same dots. she doesn't get the benefit of seeing ominous asides with akio etc., to her he's just a normal guy who is her best friend's cool brother that has exhibited almost nothing to make her actually suspicious of him, & she's young. to make the assumptions the audience can with the amount of info she has would require her to make a sometimes large bad-faith leap of logic, i think.

anthy, nanami, and juri etc project onto utena that she's dumber or more naive or more oblivious and incapable of understanding that she really is, i think, because they know more than she does. they're a little condescending to her sometimes. utena too is a subject of people's constructed images and projections - she's not immune to that, and sometimes she directly proves those projections wrong

a lot of utena's 'dumbness' comes from the convergence of her thinking anthy really is that weird and just going along with it, and anthy either thinking utena is really that dumb and / or making the situation out so that utena appears to be the dumb one in her reaction, just to be funny. for example, the planetarium projector incident is utena asking if that big machine has been what anthy's referred to as her "brother" all along because anthy seems weird enough to do something like that, and anthy going "no that's a planetarium projector."

utena thinks a lot really. there are scenes where you can see how her thoughts have been carrying over, how she's been mulling it over it all day. that's not to say that she can't actually be blunt or oblivious to things sometimes, often a product of her tunnel vision latched onto something else specific, or her consciously ignoring some things that she doesn't want to think about. she is pretty trusting and tends to see the good in people, & that can let her overlook things. but i don’t think she’s ‘too dumb’ at all, really, given the circumstances
