Nellie Bly's trip around the world is one of her greatest feats, but she was also an amazing investigative journalist.

"Ten Days in a Mad-House" (1887) is one of Nellie Bly's most famous works. She went undercover (she feigned mental illness) as a patient at the Women's Lunatic Asylum in New York City. Her exposé revealed the appalling conditions and abuse in mental health facilities, leading to public outcry and significant reforms in mental health care.

She was also an inventor!

Bly invented and patented an improved steel barrel, which became a precursor to the 55-gallon oil drum we know today. She also patented designs for various metal containers, including improvements for milk cans and garbage cans, focusing on practicality and durability.

She is the definition of a trailblazer...and apparently an arcanist! Or at least someone who isn't afraid of arcanum. The fact her bag is arcanum imbued aligns with a sense of practicality. It's very fitting considering her patents and improvements as an inventor.

If the suppression of emotions and memories can cause memory loss, then there's a slight possibility that it may be one of the reasons why Urd can barely remember. We're not sure yet what Urd has truly gone through but I don't think being Reversed and braving the storm and surviving all the same can lead to anything good and her past is still a mystery to be uncovered.

So possibly it's not just because of the side effects of surviving the storm but also suppressing memories and deep emotions of what she'd gone through is the cause of her amnesiac state. It's an interesting thought to say the least.

Also this implies that there's a slight chance of Vertin slowly losing her memories due to blocking and suppressing strong emotions. Which could not only deal some good heavy angst but also parallel Urd's own if she truly is her mother.

Girl I know you're having a breakdown but I can't help but think of this meme in this scene.

Anyways I finally finally finished the new story. I can see why a lot of people didn't like it but eh it felt pretty standard for me. I think it just has some pacing and focus problems.

Can't say much for how Brazil was represented but it definitely wasn't given a lot of focus (granted, compared to Rayashki this IS a main story so it had to be sidelined somewhat). The main focus seems to be the discovery of post-storm expys and Igor's betrayal, but even then I think the focus was split too much (like the betrayal could've been more effective with one or two more episodes focused on Lopera and her thoughts about them, and Anjo's release didn't really feel as impactful as I expected it to be).

Overall it kinda felt more like the first bites before getting into the juicy parts of a burger, you're getting something but not the best part, similar to how I felt about the Apeiron chapter in all honesty.

Anyways that's all for my ramble, I'm gonna do Anjo's story next which I heard was actually good! Then maybe I'll finally get to Semmelweis' and do the SoD expansion.

Doubt Comes In

37 is met with the sight of the familiar red. presented in front of her in all of its glory, and yet there's so much of it. too much, even.

for once, those green eyes don't open to look. it's marked with jagged shapes, left by those deceiving hands. her hands are also scarred similarly—they're unequal, yet the pain flows the same way down.

the centre of her chest had become a dark, narrow, and hollow pit. it made her already-dark clothes a shade only founded in the styx.

these marks stain her skin with the same redness of her loose hair. and yet she smiles at feeling her familiar presence.

with her familiar, weak, endearing voice, she says, "you're early."

37 doesn't say anything. she could only kneel, as if bound by instinct. she holds her wounded hands, just as she did when giving those uniquely-arranged shells. she guides them to paint her own face, hold her like she used to long ago.

"i've missed you."

as much as her body wanted to deny her, she moved to sit upright, leaning down to let her lips touch 37's forehead. crimson mixes with cerulean, just as how dirty hands—remaining still against 37's hands and face—stains fair skin.

"i'm glad," she muttered.

moments passed. her hands began to ease, and her head moves down to 37's shoulder. the familiar warmth fades into coldness, and her shallow breaths disappear.

37 looks down at the heap of red hair. she could not bring her home as she had hoped.

... and she couldn't help but mimic her concluding action, face half-buried into her hair. it smelled of iron and sea salt. of home.

...

many times she had moved forward and she followed, looking back only few times because she was so sure—she always knew she was there.

no matter how long it took for her to catch up, nor how immersed she was in her equations, she was always there for her.

but for the first time, she doubts.

for once, she only sees the empty space behind her. she hears her own breath move against the faintest sound of wind.

she feels no eyes weighing perfectly on her once-balanced shoulders; only the weight of blood and the lingering presence of the girl she once held dear.
