Ok so you know how sculk sensors do that little click-rattle thing when you trigger them?

That’s also how Wardens and the sculk communicate!

Have you ever clicked your tongue before? Try to recreate that noise at the back of your throat. You get this sort of muffled half-click sound, right?

In my mind, Wardens have a sort of mix between a larynx and a syrinx (which is the specialized voice box that bird have, and they have two of them that are separate in such a way that they can make two sounds at once, isn’t that neat?). This specialization allows them to make a clicking noise similar to what some birds can do. Due to the mutualistic relationship between the two species and the sculk’s half-sapience, this series of different clicks formed into a shared pseudo-language.

Of course, actual communication through this remains very rough, as it was created by two species that already had a close evolutionary bond. In the present, it’s mainly used by Wardens to do the following:

- Summon a sculk sensor/creature

- Gather information about the surrounding lands

- Self-soothe through call-and-response*

*This is the one I find to be the most interesting in terms of worldbuilding. This call-and-response technique was used by Wardens who were lucky enough to remain unfound. Although they were a solitary species, for many young Wardens this was the first time that they had ever been on their own. This call-and-response was used as a comforting reminder that, even if they themself were isolated from the rest of their kind, they weren’t ever truly alone in the world as long as the sculk was there.

Moved Out

Hey there! Long time no see, eh?

I sort of just realized that I'd basically dropped off the face of the Earth after checking through my email and seeing that there have been people interacting with my stuff every now and again, so I figured that I owe the handful of you that'll see this a bit of an explanation!

I haven't been in a great mental state since late June of 2021, so for a little over half a year now. I couldn't write anything that I was happy with, I stopped enjoying it. Suddenly I would find myself staring at blank documents, paralyzed with an inability to write down a single sentence that I considered passable, and the amount of half-baked ideas and drafted works that I've thrown out over the past few months is a tad bit overwhelming, if I'm honest.

Recently, though, I've managed to condense that destructive urge into something a smidge more productive: editing. All of the docs that house my fics--finished works, works in progress, and rambling bullet-point style outlines--have undergone some heavy editing that's left me more satisfied with the end products.

In my opinion, this has been a huge step towards getting back into writing. This school year has been particularly harsh in terms of using up mental energy, so this process has taken much longer than I would have liked, but it seems like slow and steady wins the race yet again. I can't make any promises, but I'm hoping to have the edited chapters out soon.

As for this blog, I've decided to move to a new account. I feel that I've drastically limited myself through my intense focus on the MCYT G/T community in particular when I'd really love to be able to chatter about all of my AUs. Presumably, my Borrowing Brothers fic is what you're here for since I've never mentioned this Tumblr in my Ao3 notes, and I fear I've misled you in some way.

If you'd still like to keep up with me, my new account is @litotes-is-trying. I believe that I made it in October, and it's mostly been collecting dust, but I'd like to have it as a sort of storage space for my ideas: AUs, worldbuilding tidbits, headcanons, and early drafts of new/in-progress works. Obviously, the blog is in need of some serious housekeeping to make a tagging and navigation system (and to sort the poor thing out aesthetically), but if you're interested in seeing what I'll do or are curious about some of the inner workings of my other AUs, you know where to find me.
