Bringing this out the depths of 6 months ago (3 months before Daggerheart even came out) because people love to misinterpret things I say.
Here is me pointing out:
there's a 50/50-ish shot of D&D or Daggerheart
they probably already picked which one they were going with "a while ago" (which would be 9-12 months ago now)
switching from D&D would be hard
if they were going to switch away from D&D this would be their chance and they could get something "designed to spec" out of it
if they didn't go with Daggerheart it "might look bad" i.e. people are gonna make a bigger deal out of it than it is
pinning a new system and a new campaign on each other could get extreme results
how many things might be off the table if they did switch systems
... now ... before the announcement I did end up leaning even slightly more to the Daggerheart side (about 55 to D&D's 45) because they did decide to change so many other things that would, on a collective basis, make a system change at least seem like less of a swing. But honestly them going for impactful changes on the setting, cast, and party format side should have keyed me to them not being willing to fuck with more functional stuff like the game system.
With the announcement of the Daggerheart release on May 20 … this is the first time my guess of if Campaign 4 will be played in D&D (5.14 or 5.24) or in Daggerheart has tipped slightly in favor of it. Prior to this my prediction has always been 50/50. Both systems had fairly equal benefits and drawbacks. While internally they've already made that choice and likely did a while ago, it's not directly apparent which way they will go.
Moving away from D&D is difficult for a laundry list of reasons. From a game running and playing perspective tossing out years of knowledge and instinct is hard. I’ve been DMing, primarily D&D across 3 1/2 editions, for nearly 25 years and no matter what ... my groups always circle back around to D&D. That has little to do with the game system itself; it’s the huge community resources available for it. Only a few times have I not been able to quickly find advice from multiple points of view or various solutions no matter how weird or specific my issues were. My players have echoed similar experiences. It's a nearly endless well of things to lean on even if the Critical Role team doesn't.
Of course with a new D&D edition out, general bad vibes for WotC/Hasbro, and CR’s wanting to expand … this is the best opportunity to switch it up they’re going to get for a while. In addition it might look bad to not go all in on a game you presumably designed to spec for your very specific players and program. As a purely business tactic it makes sense to kicking off your next major campaign to feature your new game system around the same time.
However it might a bigger risk to switch to Daggerheart than they’d be willing to take at this point in their business. While the percentage of the audience that’s watching exclusively for D&D, dislike Daggerheart, or won’t be able/willing to deal with a new system is small it’s not insignificant. Resting the a full campaign and a new TTRPG system on each other can force a double success or double failure.
But really the biggest concern I would bring up is the choices that picking Daggerheart might take off the table. A system change is about the biggest shift this kind of media can make. Having professionally seen how similar moves happened, in a case like this I would recommend not making any other big change (setting, cast, formatting, production, scheduling) that would impact the campaign. Committing to only making so many changes is a difficult deal. One that a lot of productions mess up with.

Something that I hope Brennan does that Matt didn't for Campaign 4:
Keep a calendar!
Matt didn't seem to do that and ended up relying on the community via CritRoleStats (RIP) to keep track of the passing days in the Exandria campaigns. This wasn't too much of an issue, but it did come up during C3 when the party was split. Team Wildemount ended up having an extra week that Team Issylra didn't have.
If Brennan's going to do a West Marches style campaign for Aramán, with three different groups doing different things that will impact the world for the other groups, he needs to have a calendar to keep track of the days and events for each group!
#campaign 4#THIS#1000000% THIS#west marches are fundamentally asynchronous#time keeping parallel actions is a core maintenance issue#you should see the meticulously kept spread sheet calendar of the 1400+ person private world I play and DM in

I don't know what my thoughts on Campaign 4 are yet and honestly with this format It will likely be into early 2026 before I know how this is gonna go.
They did about 80-90% of what I expected. The sticking with D&D is maybe the odd thing because they ripped the bandage off with everything else. I'm glad for me about it because ... honestly Daggerheart isn't doing it for me as a player or DM.
Most of my D&D experience in the last 30 years has been in West Marches-like games. While that style can solve many problems from a production standpoint, it can introduce others when using it for a storytelling product. There are ways to minimize that. Boring nuts and bolts stuff if you are playing to play, but it has to be highly managed if you are trying to maintain the style of CR.
#critical role#campaign 4#CR weirdly coming closer to my D&D style#and I'm starring at them like an incoming train#hoping they have a plan in place for the asynchronousity that this kind of West Marches tends towards#it took the team I'm with 4 years to figure out what the problem was and fix it

Full map of Exandria, 2025 update!
Hi again everyone! It's been another year, and with Campaign 4 taking us to another world, I thought it was time to release another update to my definitive map of Exandria!
Linked below is a download file, which includes both high and standard resolution .pngs and well as the low res .jpeg that you see in this post. Also includes the Wonderdraft map file, for anyone who wants to take this map and modify it for themselves!
High-resolution map images and Wonderdraft file download:
Pay What You Want Ko-fi link [HERE]
Only a few changes have been made to my map in the last year, summarized below:
Added Seedfeld from The Re-Slayer's Take to Demithore Valley.
Added Port Callivon and Gremidash mentioned by Raishan in The Legend of Vox Machina to Mornset Countryside.
Added Torm's Hill and Snowgrave pass from ExU: Divergence to Mornset Countryside; added unofficial roads connecting Torm's Hill to Bronbog.
Added Seagate from ExU: Divergence to Othanzia.
Added village of Lichenvel from Vox Machina: Stories Untold to Menagerie Coast
Added village of Vashlow mentioned by K'ryyn in Critical Role Campaign 1 to Menagerie Coast
Added island of Evaterena and the village of Yutazo from Tag Team at the Teeth to the Shattered Teeth.
Once again I want to give special thanks to Don Farland for his original fan map of Exandria, created all the way before the release of Explorer's Guide to Wildemount, upon which I originally based my map of the Shattered Teeth, to Niko Vanhala for his fan-made maps of Marquet and Issylra, upon which I have loosely based my maps of those continents. And of course another thank you to Andy Law and Deven Rue for the official cartography of Exandria!

welcome to the Murdersex zine, a zine celebrating all things sex and murder. but um. we don't want to romanticize it or anything so don't make your submissions too murdersexy. we will do extensive background checks on all applicants and if we decide a past work of yours has too much sexy murder we'll have to remove you, sorry. we have limits, you know, we want a tasteful gory spread you could put on your coffee table, and having the Wrong people in it would kill the vibe (and we condemn all killing! wholeheartedly!)
