Y'all not understanding that Mary is a White-passing Black Woman is frying my brain fr.

The best way I can equate her narrative throughout the beginning is when you're a little girl and gender doesn't really matter. You play with girls and boys equally because you're all kids. And then one day the same boys you played tag with don't want to play anymore. You're only allowed to play with "girls" toys and wear "girls" colors. Adults tease you at best and outright reprimand you at worst because you still want to run with the boys who, two years ago, were your favorite playmates.

Even worse is when those same boys tease you and exclude you too, all because now you're a girl instead of just another kid.

Mary has a Black mother, grew up among the Black folks and coloreds in their hometown. Which is why she had to leave the town and the state to find opportunity. The same way Smoke and Stack went to Chicago to make something of themselves.

When Stack says, "For one night, we was free." That includes Mary.

For one night she got to be with her one true love, for one night she got to be among her people, with what remained of her family after her mother died. That's why she was so vulnerable to Remmick. Once that one night was over she'd be forced to go back to Arkansas living as a White woman, constantly longing for a home she can't return to, a love that keeps pushing her away to protect her, and praying that no one ever found out her roots because that would spell the end for her.

And she didn't go out to talk to Remmick and Klan out of White arrogance, she did it because she wanted to use her unwanted power of passing to help her family for once. Because they are her community and if she can do anything, even sus out the weird "musicians" lurking in their parking lot, she was going to do it for them.

Lastly, let's not act like Mary was the only reason Remmick was able to turn one of the twins/anyone inside the sawmill. Cornbread left shortly after her to go piss, and that's why he missed Stack getting bit by Mary and dying. Say she hadn't gone out, he'd have still had to use the bathroom and would have been let inside after being bitten without anyone thinking to stop him because they wouldn't have known not to trust him.

The whole point of Sinners is that they were all damned. Take Mary out of it, Remmick would still be drawn to Sammie. Cornbread still would have been bitten. And even if the threat of Remmick never materialized the Klan would have been there minutes after dawn.

Stop applying modern beliefs and feelings about race on a time period where one drop, passing or not, made you vulnerable under Jim Crow.

Smoke needed to handle some business and Annie handled the business.

Nawl but yall …. Did yall see how smoke turned Annie around !! How he pushed her !? ( I couldn’t find the gif/ reel 😭) And idk if it was my ears only but I thought I heard him say “ turn ya ass around “ lawwwwwddd my stomach tingled !! Cause Annie was vulnerable in that moment probably the most vulnerable we’ve seen her throughout the movie .. & that push was the most dominant we’ve seen smoke be with her .. like girl stop playing with me and take this .. well you know .. then my girl facial expression huh!? The pleasure and the pain , the stretch and the fullness of not being intimate with somebody for seven years bihhh I went 3 wks one time and I was like slow down lol.. & smoke was like “Nawl you got it !! Wheewww .. I been on tik tok looking at edits so don’t mind me yall but yea !! Annie and smoke forever !

A/N: I was inspired by the scene in Sinners where Stack told Preacher boy Sammie about what happened to his daddy, another Tumblr user who wrote their rendition of the events that transpired (@writerwhowrit3s.tumblr.com) and by my own personal trauma being a person who endured physical abuse at the hands of my parents. This was a cathartic exercise for me. I’m sorry if this is triggering for anyone who has gone through such experiences, just know you are seen. Take care of yourself.

The shadows stretched long across the rough crudely placed wooden floorboards when Elias came to. The meager one room shack was nearly dark except the purplish yellow sky that shone through the un-shuttered glassless windows. It was cool down there on the floor, but the summer heat was still present like a nagging sensation that danced across the skin like being too close to a fire.

His head hurt. He lay there on the floor on his side catching his bearings. Elias scanned the room and realized one of his eyes was swollen shut. The draft on the ground alleviated some of the throbbing. He could feel a sticky damp sensation around his mouth, nose and cheek; it was beneath him too, on the dusty splintered floor. He licked his lips and winced, sensing a coppery metallic taste in his mouth. He felt moist and clammy around his thigh and pecker area; the fabric of the patchwork denim overalls clung to him; he must have pissed himself when it happened.

Elias’ jaw ached something fierce. He felt discombobulated; adjusting his weight up onto his Shoulder and elbow, his head felt like it was spinning. He readjusted onto his back. His chest hurt too; as he tried to inhale, he could feel sharp stabbing pains around his ribs.

As he lay there, he could feel the long raise welts across his legs, arms and midsection. They stung mostly. The switch didn’t hurt… that bad. He was used to it at this point; the familiar feeling of his skin being stripped off by a thin piece tree branch pulled from the front yard and used as a makeshift whip. Besides, he deserved it, running his mouth off the way he did; damn near asked for it. His daddy ain’t mean nothing by it.

They had just turned 14-- Just barely become men; Elijah and He. Where was Elijah?

“How you be?”

Elias heard the voice coming from one of the shadows followed by the sound of something heavy and metal hitting the floor.

“Feel like shit but I’m aiight.”

Elias turned his head to face Elijah who was leaning on a shovel by the entryway. There was a long pause as Elijah placed the Shovel down flat and picked up the metal wash basin and brought it to where Elias was on the ground.

Elijah’s face looked solemnly down at Elias ; were his clothes bloody? A shift in tension arose in Elias; A pit formed in his stomach; felt kinda like he might puke.

“Where’s Papa?”

Elias looked up through his one good eye at his twin brother, who suddenly, to him, looked bigger more manly than he ever had before; his face half in shadow half-lit by the rapidly setting sun. Smoke sat beside Elias with a rag, dipped it into the basin of water and wrung it out and began cleaning Elias’…Stack’s wounds.

“He--he ain’t gon never lay his hands on you ev’r-again.”

Smoke’s voice was shaky but full of resolve. Stack immediately understood but didn’t want to understand. He couldn’t help it; he cried. Silently. He knew Smoke was crying too.

They said nothing, the sound of their sniffling commingled in the darkness.

M’Boy don’t even have that smile no more. Stack was always smiling but his face looked so pained. It’s bittersweet.
