Masque has been finding its way into your carts a lot lately, and I can understand why. — Minimal, abstract line art works with all kinds of decor, and it is having a moment right now. You can go monochrome, or pair with brightly colored art. Farmhouse decor? It works. Mid century modern decor? It works, too! Modern glam/luxe? Still works! — Printable is available via my shop, link in bio. (at Kansas City, Missouri) https://www.instagram.com/p/CMqFwoxHopt/?igshid=1wfv2o9x83c9u

I love seeing how you display these posters in your homes. This one in particular is by Mandy from @amongallofthis — if you aren’t already following her, you should! — She is a local KonMari consultant who inspires me daily to lead a more intentional, minimal life (I say as I see kids toys out of the corner of my eyes, haha!). Her pocket-folding method has changed my life, no joke. — Pivoting, slightly: I felt like posting an image of my human rights poster because I’m feeling a lot of anger over the continued emboldened racism in this country. Most recently with the reminder that there has been no justice for Breonna Taylor, coupled with the mass shooting that targeted Asian-American women in Atlanta. — It’s times like these that make us feel helpless, powerless in the face of white supremacy and the language being used to describe such events. — A terrorist who claims he just had a bad day is gaslighting of the highest degree — as if we really need to see a typed manifesto of his misogyny and racism to know what his motivations were. — Speaking up and putting our money toward organized efforts to dismantle systemic racism is always important. I’m aiming my anger in this direction, and I hope you do, too. — Check my stories, where I link to others who have compiled resources and places to donate to help fight hate against our Asian fam. This might look like a random watercolor, but it’s really a tale of two wills: me, pushing my blue agenda, and Audrey, insisting on layers and layers of reddish brown. — I’ve been posting infrequently because I’ve had an uptick in clients recently, which is great news. Also, this has forced me to recognize when to just chill out and recharge. It’s a difficult process (kind of like the tug-of-war of this watercolor) because I have so many ideas I want to execute on the Little Gold Pixel end. — I’m finally starting to learn that I can’t pour from an empty cup — and I’m being intentional in my rare down time now. Reading, painting, watching trash TV. In other words, allowing myself to rest. I’m already seeing things more clearly, and I have some solutions to problems that have been eluding me. I’ve got a lot of things in mind for the year ahead, and I hope you stick around even if my updates are a little sporadic! Love you, my friends! Next up: the fabulous Sarah Vaughan, whose songs I listened to on repeat in high school and sang along to (though probably not nearly as well as I hoped!). — Known as Sassy or The Divine One, Sarah started her music career as a teen, when she would sneak out at night to sing in nightclubs in NYC. — She quickly made a name for herself in the early 1940s jazz scene, and started a career that continued through the 1980s until she succumbed to lung cancer. — She was known for pitch-perfect vocals and a “luscious timbre” with a large range. — Start with: “Whatever Lola Wants,” “Lullaby of Birdland,” “They Can’t Take That Away From Me,” “Just One of those Things,” “Black Coffee,” “Stormy Weather” (at Kansas City, Missouri) https://www.instagram.com/p/CLAHutPnJEk/?igshid=1ig9mzn4d9j63

Next up in my series of Black women vocalists is the one ... the only ... Whitney Houston! — Whitney provided the soundtrack to my childhood — from “So Emotional” to “I Have Nothing” from The Bodyguard. — I have a vivid memory of me, age 11, dancing in the living room watching the “I’m Your Baby Tonight” video on MTV for the first time. — Whitney’s power vocals were unparalleled and still send chills up and down my spine. — Which Whitney Houston song is the best? Tell me in the comments. 👇 (at Kansas City, Missouri) https://www.instagram.com/p/CK2sjATnroS/?igshid=mpptv4ibx5e8

The incomparable Nina Simone. 🙌 — For Black History Month (which should be every day and not just a month) I’m illustrating my favorite Black women vocalists. — The rest of the list will be randomly ordered, but I must confess that I’m starting with Nina because she is my absolute favorite of all time. — Did you know she was a serious concert pianist who began playing and singing at lounge clubs as a way to make money, and she never took the recording industry seriously? — Her style spans jazz, blues and pop, and she is known for her signature deep, lush vocals. — I can’t pick a favorite song. Seriously, I love everything she sings. But her most important song was Mississippi Goddam. If you haven’t heard it, get thee to Spotify and feel the righteousness that is Nina Simone the Activist. — What’s your fave Nina Simone song? Tell me in the comments. 👇 (at Kansas City, Missouri) https://www.instagram.com/p/CKxjmhjny1R/?igshid=y2s8wfi39obm

Never mind me, just trying to draw my way into feeling festive with these vintage ornament doodles. — I did the same thing earlier by baking chocolate chip & cherry cookies, and introducing the kids making my mom’s fudge and my dad’s peanut clusters. We also made peanut butter marshmallow squares. — It definitely feels like going through the motions this year. If I don’t feel the cheer soon, I’ll have no choice but to watch Elf and sing loud for all to hear. (at Kansas City, Missouri) https://www.instagram.com/p/CJDFjcEnirK/?igshid=ugsb11jovd0m
