(Planned to do this as a comment but it got out of hand quickly so I hope you don’t mind the reblog!)

Here are some of the Thai BL shows I have seen in which I found the family dynamics particularly interesting or noteworthy. The list may contain some slight spoilers.

Shows where the family dynamics are central to the plot and take up a lot of screen time:

- To Sir, With Love. Mothers, their sons, and the millions ways in which their love can hurt them. Also the best brothers in Thai BL hands down, with a side of death glitter.

- Bad Buddy. Complicated parents/children relationships, flagship of this list for the start of Philip Larkin’s This Be The Verse: “they fuck you up, your mum and dad”. Very cute siblings in this one too.

- Moonlight Chicken. Difficult but loving relationship between uncle and nephew, found family as much as blood family, disabled child with absentee parents.

- The Miracle of Teddy Bear. Relationships are difficult in this one too, an ailing mother taken care of by a son who resents her for not protecting him from his violent father (there is more to this but that’s the meat of the situation). This one is tonally … interesting because woven into that, there are literally talking furniture. Still recommended warmly.

- Until We Meed Again. Contentious father and son relationships, touches upon the way death and guilt can destroy families, tons of siblings relationships that are more or less explored but all lovely. I am biased with this one because every single family dynamic in it is absolutely fascinating to me (the man who let his mother just take his oldest kid away to raise him away from the rest of his family?? and that’s just, like. A thing in passing, barely dwelt on?? incredible. I've been here since 2019 and I still can't stop thinking about all of them)

- Fathers (movie from 2016). Plugging this one in, because it’s about two men and their son, and while I am not enthusiastic on all aspects of it, it was still interesting.

Shows where the family dynamics are important to the plot but are less centered on than the romance/other plots :

- Laws of Attraction. Excellent grandma, beautiful if terribly sad nephew-niece relationship (and the impact of losing a child). Also great, handsome, not-always-law-abiding, pseudo siblings.

- La Pluie (noting that I have not finished this one yet). Great siblings, exploring being a child of divorce in a world where soulmates exist. Also something about suffering from the family curse VS suffering from not sharing the curse of your parents and brother.

- My Only 12%. This one again for siblings, particularly Seiw and his sister and brother.

- Ghost Host Ghost House. An exploration of grief (shocking) and family and learning to say goodbye. Loss of a parent, and a lovely sibling duo.

- He’s Coming to Me. This one has a wonderful mother and son relationship in it! And some family mystery as the underlying plot.

Shows that have so many other things going on, but the family dynamics particularly tickled me despite limited screen time:

- Between Us. The W brothers, always here for siblings etc. A lot of very interesting dynamics that could (should) have been explored more in depth.

- Something in my Room. Child of recent divorce, mother and son trying to cope. A ghost that keep learning he didn’t really know his parents as well as he thought. A young woman burdened by the legacy of a dead father involved in some truly shitty stuff. A young man who lost his parents early and copes with it by saying they were abducted by aliens.

- Don’t Say No. Fiat’s family is just … A Lot. Interesting idea regarding his mother, her obsession with him, and the trauma it caused. It’s very soap-opera like but the concept worked for me.

- Dead Friend Forever. Once again, siblings! it is horror, so, you know. But still, really good siblings with a complicated relationship.

- Love in Translation. Overbearing older brother, and how that impacts them both (and their relationships). It's a comedy so it's not That Deep but still.

Also, not a BL but I feel like I should still plug in GAP with its horrid grandmother and the traumatized sisters.

Others I did not know where to put:

- Love by Chance with Pete and his mom (brief - like mostly episode 1 but really REALLY sweet).

- My Gear and Your Gown. Both mains have very different but interesting relationships to their parents that I wish would have been explored in far, far more details.

- You’re My Sky and the Vee/Dom/Pan situation. Siblings, my weakness, and a very well done plot of falling for the boyfriend of your beloved sister. It’s here because we don’t see Pan that much and it’s more romance than family focused. Still great.

- My School President and its two very different, but very loving moms.

- Rakdiao and the siblings. Diao and Dao lives together, they love each other and annoy each other all the time. They also look over and take care of each other. It's a sitcom so, take the genre into account, but I like them a lot.

I'm working on a little personal project and would love any recommendations for Thai BL that you think have interesting family dynamics feel free to add the reason or just drop the tittle it's all useful.

☆*:.｡. Day 15: 5 Bestest besties .｡.:*☆

Oh yes, let’s give it up for friendship! I do love a good friendship, nearly as much as siblings (but just nearly). Thailand I'd say is especially good at that game I feel like. Alright, here's my list!

- Pharm, Team, and Manaow in Until We Meet Again. They are so sweet the three of them, they love and care for each other, and their friendship while new-ish feels so solid and serene, I love them.

- Yamada Koharu from Kabe Koji. I honestly don’t think he could make it without her, she’s always here for him even when he can’t realize it properly. She is a fantastic friend to him all along. Also she is brilliant and hilarious and I love her.

- The two friend groups in Secret Crush on You, really. Especially our group of creative little weirdos, but I love how the two groups have each other’s back, and how they merge too. They’re really sweet and they all love each other which makes me weak in the knee.

- My boy Katori from Takara kun to Amagi kun. He didn’t make it in the Best Boy list (a shame), but he is definitely deserving of a place in this list! He’s always there to help those two (and heavens know they do need a nudge), he always look out for Amagi, and he is just so funny. (my boy is suffering)

- And because we started this game with some OG, I will end it with some OG and go with Yiwha from Together With Me! (the whole group gets it, but I'll put the focus on her). She is just that great, she was probably my favorite character of the show actually. She's just a bestest bestie TM.

☆*:.｡. Day 14: Top 5 most sad boys .｡.:*☆

I love a tragedy, I really do (sometimes you just need to have a good cry) so I was reaaaaally excited about this list.

- Korn from Until We Meet Again. I'll kickstart the list with probably my favorite of all the sad boys BL gave me. It's the tragedy of him knowing it can't end well, the weight he carries all the time, and despite all that, the love he has for his brothers, the love he has for In. I just love him beyond words.

- Mitsuru from Eien no Kinou. Even before everything happens, Mitsuru is sad, and alone. This show is such a beautiful and gentle story about grief and I love both Mitsuru and Koichi so very dearly.

- Nut from The Miracle of Teddy Bear. I guess you could argue he is more angry, but imo he does fall under the Sad Boy umbrella. He is desperately fighting through grieving a father who never loved him and a mother not yet gone but clearly not fully there anymore, through his whole family history and his own heartache. He is carrying such sadness all the time.

- Nekoyashiki from Kabe Koji who qualifies perfectly. He is so entrenched in self doubt, self isolation in a way, he is sad in different ways from the others in this list but still. Still.

- Shi Jaewoo from Once Again (yes Moon Jiyong again don't look at me). He is such a sad, burdened young man stuck in a grey world, and the entire tragedy of his story in this broke my heart ngl. He is so sad, and so good, he deserves his place here.

☆*:.｡. Day 13: Give 5 good boys a gold star .｡.:*☆

I love lists, so it's great. I am so bad at lists, so it's really hard too lol

- Suh Yechan from Love Tractor. Is there any better Good Boy than Certified Golden Retriever Boy Yechan?? I think not. He deserves at least two gold stars imo.

- Tian from To Sir, With Love. He’s just the goodest boy, never did anything bad in his life, love his family even when they barely deserve it, just wants to be respected and happy. 100/10 no notes.

- Woo Seunghyun from The New Employee. Absolute cinnamon roll, adorable, cute, never did anything wrong in his life, cheeks to die for, gold star for him. (may have to do in part with the actor, who also was a fantastically good - if terribly sad - boy in Once Again)

- Ichijo Sota from Zenra Meshi. He’ll forever be my favorite blade of tall grass, and despite sometimes being the most awkward man alive, he was also trying so hard to understand and make things right!! A good boy for sure.

- Ye Xingsi from History 4: Close to You. Sweetest man, loved his friend and his family so much, deserved so much better than the hand he was dealt in that show. Big gold star for him.

☆*:.｡. Day 12: Wedding you wish you had an invite to .｡.:*☆

Oh, I do love a wedding. I’d go to all of them if I could. My picks are from Thailand in part because they do friends groups in a way that calls to me, and I would feel too awkward to intrude on more… family oriented ones (as I could imagine for JBL for example).

First answer that comes to mind would be Dean and Pharm from Until We Meet Again. First, I love them dearly and after everything they went through it would feel very lovely to see them get to celebrate this with the ones they love. I also like to imagine that the remnant of Korn and In’s souls would get to see them able to do that commitment to each other in a way they didn’t ever got to in their life, and it would be just… I kind of want that for them. Also, let’s be honest, the food would be BOMB and I would be fully here for that please and thank you.

Okay, my second choice is a little from left field based on the fact that I am not super into them, but I will pick Tonhon and Chonlatee from their self titled show. Look. Listen. Between both their families and their group of friends, it would be delightfully chaotic and I can’t imagine the whole thing being anything but a load of over dramatic fun and I am super into that. So, I’d love an invitation for this one for sure.

☆*:.｡. Day 11: Breakup that should have stayed broken up .｡.:*☆

Okay, my main problem for this one was that I didn’t have it in me to go back to some of those shows to double check that they actually do get together/break up/make up but I tried to the best of my recollection. If I got them wrong. well… know I really didn’t want them together.

I will say Yi and Kondiao in Cutie Pie who I think fit the bill on technicality (I have not watched their spin-off series but I do not believe it would warm me up to them). Look, there is nothing that worked for me there. Yi refuses the engage with Kondiao with the stubbornness of a mule on a bad day and for what. Despite the explanations the show provided, there was never a single moment where I could fathom them managing to make their way toward a relationship. There was no trust there, no communication, no sharing of anything, and frankly they always only seemed held together by guilt and responsibility (no matter how hard they tried to make me believe otherwise) and while this could definitely make for a good premise (I do love an arranged marriage that blossom into love), the spark was never there for me.

I am going to throw Pi and Mork from Fish Upon the Sky out there too, tho I have no confidence they do actually get together before the end. I do not like the dynamic in that relationship at all and, sorry to say and despite Pi being a brat (which I do like), is all on Mork’s writing for me. There is no reciprocity between them, Mork keeps secrets, decides what is best for Pi and doesn’t stop pushing until Pi relent, trample all over the limits Pi tries to set up, and while I can enjoy a persistent LI this was just SO MUCH. Keep these two apart.

And then, as a little bonus and because I mentioned the show in an earlier ask so I thought of them, Bon and Duen in My Engineer. I do think they could make it work, ultimately, but MAN we were NOT there by the time they get back together at the end of the show. They both had a lot of work to do on themselves before even thinking of getting back into that, and giving themselves time apart would have been a good idea.

☆*:.｡. Day 10: Most emotionally pleasing love scene .｡.:*☆

Okay, this one is going to be easy and feature a recent show: the last time Jom and Yai have sex in I Feel You Linger in the Air. Was is so sad it brought me to tears? Yes. But it felt so satisfying emotionally because it was just so good, tonally made perfect sense for where they were in their story, beautifully acted with such a smart use of flashbacks and sound, I just… It was truly a powerful scene and I loved every single teary minute of it.

I will also give a nod to Sky and Jao’s love scene in Secret Crush on You (yes again), particularly the little negotiation that comes right before it. It was a nice resolution to the push and pull they have going on during the show, Sky getting his Consent King’s card, that little ‘if it’s tasty, come eat often…’, the pink lighting of Jao letting Sky in … I can turn a blind eye to the teeth-opening of the condom. I just really like it.

☆*:.｡. Day 9: Most visually pleasing love scene .｡.:*☆

Hmm this one is a little difficult somehow, I'm dithering on what 'visually' means exactly (pretty to look at, obviously, but like. how much of the actor being pretty factor in? I spent too long thinking about that).

Alright let's start recent and go with Phaya and Tharn in The Sign, particularly that bit in the shower. I am definitely not immune to neon lighting so that was definitely a plus - generally the colors and the lights in that whole scene were extremely pleasing to the eye.

My second choice also features Billy Patchanon I realize lol and it's not fully a love scene but I'm not above cheating again, it's that whole kissing/make out scene between Toh and Nuea in Secret Crush on You. It's less ... visually daring I guess that my first pick (or that their bathtub scene) but I love this one so much. I love how soft it looks, the contrast between fully clothed Toh and Nuea in that small bathrobe, the way the light is on them, and of course the focus on how their hands move (yeah of course I am even less immune to hands than to neon lights).
