     “ it’s really not that amazing, ” makiko replies with a shy smile. “ our ace jumps way higher than that. ”

     this opportunity to hang out, even if it’s with other people from kuroo’s work, is taking a bit of a turn. she really isn’t in her element here, surrounded by people she’s only just met and having so much attention directed her way. it’d be better if they would talk about the volleyball teams they admire, or maybe something else entirely like the kind of meat they’d like to order once their group is seated -- anything other than her own accomplishments. but kuroo’s coworker ( mamoru, she thinks ) appears fixated on the recent game her team won, and his praise makes her cheeks warm with embarrassment. she feels a little like he might be placing her on a pedestal she doesn’t deserve.

     after all, a team has to work together to win. she’s just one piece of the well-oiled machine that is the red rabbits.

     “ you know... ” mamoru leans forward as if to tell her a secret. he even places a hand beside his mouth to conceal his lips even though his whisper isn’t all that quiet. “ your modesty is pretty cute! ”

     makiko’s face turns red as she stares back at mamoru’s grin. she doesn’t know how to respond to that, considering “ thank you, ” would only encourage him and any other response might come off rude. thankfully, though, kuroo appears like a knight in shining armor with a knowing look in his eyes. you need saving, don’t you? his eyes say, and there’s something else, too, that she doesn’t recognize. but makiko doesn’t dwell on that, instead looking a little panicked and mentally shouting back, yes, please help! 

     there’s something a little more mischievous about kuroo’s smirk when he approaches her and mamoru; she connects the dots pretty quick when kuroo wraps an arm around her waist, pulling her to his side and gesturing to one of the restaurant’s tables. “ they’re seating us now, so we should go. ” mamoru’s response is kind of quiet in comparison to before, though makiko barely notices. maybe it’s silly that as a grown woman, all she can think about is kuroo’s arm circling her waist, his hand that’s resting on the gentle curve, but that’s exactly all she can focus on. that and how very hot her cheeks feel ( at this rate, she’ll overheat, the poor babe! ). 

     makiko watches her friend as he leads her away, searching for even a hint that he, too, feels the littlest bit flustered. it’s times like these in which she’s most confused -- when she can’t decide if kuroo’s actions hint at something romantic. maybe he was helping her out, but he didn’t need to pull her close. there were other ways of saving her from that horribly awkward situation, so why choose to hold her? maybe he just wanted to stir up trouble, but that still doesn’t sound quite right, either.

     well, maybe she’ll just test something, then. it can’t hurt to drop a hint here and there, right?

     makiko copies kuroo, though she lightly grasps the back of his suit rather than his waist ( she can’t bring herself to be that bold. she really might just die ). “ thanks, kuroo, ” she says just loud enough for him to hear, lips upturned in a grateful smile. “ i don’t think i would’ve survived if your coworker kept flirting with me. ”

It was early in the morning at the neighborhood gym. Kei.ji had the net ready, a volleyball spinning on his fingers. Even when the team was advised to use this day to rest their bodies, he had other plans. 

“You’re asking what I’m trying to do? You said you wanted to be a setter, so let’s play. I’ll be your spiker. The tosses I’m accustomed to are in the middle and close to the net, but I’ll try my best and adjust to your own preferences.” 

     surprise rendered makiko speechless for a few moments. the thought had crossed her mind that keiji might intend to give her some pointers, yet she hadn’t dared to really get her hopes up, still so used to handling her dilemma on her own. keiji’s initiative warmed makiko, though, thawing out her frozen fists and frostbitten legs until she finally took a step forward to stand on the court beside him. a smile stretched across her face, makiko mused how standing there with keiji, it felt close to when they were younger and she didn’t care about expectations. she felt more herself. 

     how lucky she was to have found him again.

     “ as the setter, shouldn’t i adjust to your preferences? ” makiko asked, gaze curious and eager. “ wouldn’t it be easier to draw out the spiker’s potential that way? ”
