gentle reminder that “gay panic” is not a cutesy way of describing a gay character freaking out over another character or their sexuality. gay panic is a legal defense tactic used in the US until very recently to get homophobes out of facing consequences for killing or assaulting queer people. it is neither cute nor funny.
if you didn’t know this, that’s ok, now you do! proceed accordingly.

I rewrote the first line right before posting from like "After the biggest film in their history" bc I realized I hadn't said the name of the studio yet and then clicked post while staring at the sentence "their history after their biggest history". Managed to mess up two opening lines in one, now that's a bargain

Angel Studio's history after their biggest film (the paranoid QAnon trafficking movie) is this cycle of them doing enough prestige movies to "earn" the right to do another weird conspiracy film. Since Cabrini most of what they've done is Inspiring Prestige Biopics. But they clearly want to manifest another Sound of Freedom level hit; after all, their whole business model is about doing infomercial pitchman tactics for selling movie tickets
My evidence for this: when I went to a theater around the time this movie came out, I saw the poster for this one and thought, oh hey, is that Elizabeth Mitchell from Lost? (it is) And I swear the poster just said Possum Trot then. I can't find it now, but there are articles confirming it was retitled to this...

The Sound of Hope. "The fight for kids begins!". This movie is about a woman who got people in her town to adopt foster kids, by the way. Not doing dramatic "rescues". Or that's what IMDB tells me, I was going to see Maxxxine. But they wanted a fraction of that Sound of Freedom audience
Thing is that kind of stultifyingly sincere and politically anodyne biopic was what dominated "faith-based" screens for years. But whoops, it turns out nowadays evangelicals just really like watching QAnon sludge about some guy fighting people, and that's why that movie grossed nearly $200 million more than their next-most popular film. In conclusion, God, the third act of Maxxxine sucked
It got buried in all the other movie news in the world, but let's not forget that the people who did that awful human trafficking movie are about to release a cyberpunk thriller retelling of the Book of Job, where a man must work with a mysterious Benefactor (played by the actor who played the villain in Paul Blart Mall Cop 2, who claims he was blacklisted from Hollywood bc he won't do sex scenes), learning to become a multiverse-traveling assassin to save his wife trapped in a parallel universe ("I shifted her")
If you look it up the studio and the filmmakers are like. Constantly assuring people it's definitely based on Job, since even their audience is going "wait what is this"

Telling someone about how Operation Underground Railroad, the group Sound of Freedom is based on, have literally no plan in place for what to do if they actually rescue a child and no training to help traumatized children - to the point they just release them without any care once the cameras leave - and it struck me that their answer to Omelas is to shoot everyone in Omelas and then throw the child back in the pit
80s Satanic Panic campaigner: Satan is LITERALLY lurking beneath every preschool, kidnapping thousands of children daily!
People in 2022: Haha, how silly. Who couldn't see through that?
20s human trafficking campaigner: Gangs of Mexicans are just waiting to kidnap every well-off white lady in the suburbs. Thousands disappear every day, and the media doesn't even mention it. You are in CONSTANT DANGER and the only way to stop it is banning all these things evangelicals hate
People in 2022: Whoa. This is so scary. I have to do something about this, the real threat of human trafficking. But first, let me threaten to get my undocumented maid deported if she reports anything we've done to her

I think there's two possibilities for what happens with Doctor Who:
The BBC remains stubbornly loyal to RTD and gives him a third chance, and it probably pans out similarly, leaving us in the same boat in 2027
Some kind of hiatus, short or long, and then a reboot. I don't mean a Nine-style "soft reboot", I mean an actual reboot, the First ever Doctor going on his First ever Adventures in the TARDIS and meeting the Daleks for the First ever Time. With everyone noting how this NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE as sweatily as the kids in Halloween '18 saying "no, he wasn't her brother, that's a myth haha". People identified an obsession with continuity as one of the main flaws with RTD, and it's the lazy showbiz answer for a "fresh start". Probably with a move to a brand new, likely serialized format (or they could just do it Nine-style and start over fresh and leave the past hazy for a while. But a reboot feels more on-trend lol)

When discussing whether or not Doctor Who will return, one fact that's trotted out a lot is that it's the most profitable franchise on the BBC. This is true and comes from the BBC's own reporting about BBC Studios, the for-profit company that commercializes the BBC's programming. But there's a few reasons this isn't maybe a surefire sign the current show is not in any danger
For one, it says a large amount of the BBC's income was foreign sales of their shows, but Doctor Who's foreign rights were all taken by Disney, and the one fact everyone agrees on is that Disney is unlikely to pick up another season. Indeed, it notes that they gave early termination to their other rights deals to facilitate this now-dead deal, so the income from that is moot. They'd have to renegotiate foreign sales at the lowest point in the new series' popularity
But we can assume Doctor Who is the most merch-driven property the BBC has. Since it clearly is, the report is mainly about how much money they make selling game show formats, c'mon. But like...how much of that is related to current Doctor Who, versus selling Tennant/Smith stuff? A lot of the people watching have been watching for 20 years now. I don't think them buying Tom Baker scarves and sonic screwdriver replicas is impacted much by Doctor Who being on now. I mean, how big a seller must Dalek toys be, even though the latest series never even showed them?
I have no doubt that in the years between Enterprise's cancellation and Star Trek '09, Star Trek was probably one of the things, maybe the thing that made Paramount/Viacom/whoever owned it the most money. But that was off of TOS books and TNG DVD boxsets. A new series is nice and can drive interest to the series, but for these eternal sci-fi series, they kind of sustain themselves without it. Especially if the current show is expensive and unpopular - since people who may be put off from something while a unpopular new show is on will go back to viewing it with nostalgia when it's past
But the other factor is, if the show is that profitable and important to the BBC, that actually makes it more likely they'll put it on hiatus. Because they want the current show to be popular, and if they think giving the show a rest and then rebooting it would help make it more popular, they'd do it. There's a reason why talk about revival pitches started immediately after Enterprise ended, or why plans for a feature film started bouncing around right after Doctor Who 63-89 ended.

Also these people aren't mad at the response to the protests; they're mad bc they think every city's been a perpetually burning Mad Max hellscape the whole time, and everyone's just been lying about it.
Nothing like seeing that a decent chunk of the electorate was driven by school closures during COVID and the 2020 protests to vote for Trump. They were so mad at Trump for closing the schools and the protests they had to vote for Donald Trump to punish Joe Biden for closing the schools and the protests. Joe Biden was President in 2020, remember? But so was Donald Trump. It all makes perfect sense and was one of the biggest issues of the 2024 campaign and that's not horrifying at all

IN THIS HOUSE WE BELIEVE
Quantum is the most powerful substance known to man
One gram of quantum could power the Earth for five years
Quantum is a kind of slime-like substance
Everyone who has studied quantum physics has been afflicted with "dimensional madness"
All governments will fight for even one pint of quantum
He who controls the "quantum factor" controls "the power of quantum". Or she I guess. Or they. Neopronouns can master the "quantum factor" too

Okay so I'm not sure where I'd get another chance to talk about this but. Have y'all heard of the King Kong ride they proposed for Las Vegas
youtube
3:40 in this video discusses it. There was going to be a King Kong that scaled up and down a tower with a theater full of people inside it
Tumblr media
You may be wondering how this would work. It's natural to ask! Anyway, they didn't build it in the end
