I know you probably have received this a lot, and I do apologize for being repetitive, but I’ve been really worried and don’t want to be disrespectful. When is it okay to eat the food I offer? If I offer something to Persephone and Hades, is it okay to eat it after, for exemple? I was doing something where I’d have lunch/dinner, eat half of it and offer the other half, and then give it to my dog instead of throwing it away. Do you think that would be disrespectful? (1)

Because unfortunately I’m still hiding my religion, since my entire family is Catholic and I live with them, so I can’t really grab two plates and then dispose of one. I tend to offer water/tea and then pour it, so I won’t be disrespectful, but sometimes I’m eating something and I really want to share it with them, but I don’t want to disrespect or anything. I’ve heard about inviting them to ‘eat’ with you, but I don’t know if it applies to Hades and Persephone too? (2)

If you’re following recon standards then you don’t ever eat food given to the Theoi. Food given in offering was always destroyed, it was either burnt for Ouranic Theoi, or buried for Khthonic Theoi. When offerings were shared with Ouranic Theoi (never Khthonic Theoi because they were regarded as harder to please and easier to anger) the portion given to the Theoi was still destroyed, but the rest of the meal/animal was prepared and eaten by worshipers.

Now, I know not everyone can or even wants to follow that standard. A good deal of modern worshipers don’t separate their practices for Ouranic and Khthonic Theoi, and will observe the same offering rituals for both.

In deciding when and if you can eat food offerings, there’s going to be a different answer from everyone. I can tell you what I would do, but in the end you still have to decide what you want to do and what you feel is most respectful.

Personally, if I couldn’t give food offerings to the Theoi without having to consume those offerings for fear of my own well being, health, religious persecution, ect.. I would abstain from food offerings, but that’s because I feel rude if I eat a food offering. I feel like it’s equivalent to telling someone you got them a slice of cake, only to eat the slice of cake yourself. There are plenty of other offerings you can give, and be discreet about.

Libations are never an inadequate offering. They are the most plentiful form of offering in our faith. You don’t need wine or juice or anything fancy for libations, you can honestly use clean water and it is still a perfectly good offering. Pouring out a glass of water as a libation can be done discreetly without risking your wellbeing or safety. It can be as subtle as watering a plant, dumping out a glass in the sink, or emptying a water bottle to refill it.

I have been there before, I’ve had to hide my faith and find subtle ways to compromise, I’ve had to figure out what I felt comfortable adjusting in my own practice. I can’t tell you what’s right for you. I promise though, whether you’re reconstructionist, revivalist, or something else altogether, there are ways to discreetly and devoutly observe your faith. It’s hard, and it can be a lot of work figuring our what you’re comfortable doing in secret and what you just have to wait for until you have your own space and can practice the way you want. But I can also tell you that it does get better eventually.

When I was twenty, and very stupid, I was utterly in love with my economics professor. It is one of the most unsexy subjects, but the way this man talked about numbers was obscene. It helped that he was fucking gorgeous, too. There was a boy in econ who always sat next to me and found excuses to talk. He’d share his notes if I daydreamed during class—and I did a lot of daydreaming about that professor. This boy was persistent, so I made a deal with him. If he could ask the professor a question which he answered incorrectly, I’d agree to one date.The boy thought about it for a while, and then he asked, ‘Will she go out with me tonight?’, pointing at me. And the professor said, very decisively, ‘No.’ So the boy, thinking himself clever, asked me where I’d like to have dinner, and I said I’d tell him later. After class, I asked the professor why he’d answered ‘no’ with such certainty. Do you know what he said? He said, ‘Because you’re having dinner with me.’ And that was the night I started dating my econ Professor, and my now boyfriend of 5 years.
