do you ship suntang? :0
Oh yeah, they are hilarious together in book. Personally, I enjoy them in any version/vision from master/student to lovers, platonic and etc etc, if at the end of the day they still will have good relationship between each other!
If you didn't read a book and don't really understand why people ship them together then...allow me to show you, literally one of the gayest scene in my entire life (and it's like just one from many ones)
I like to call Wukong the first tsundere in history because how aggressively he trying to hide that he care about Tripitaka lol

I have a lot of thoughts about the character of Sun Wukong (Sūn Wùkōng) in Lego Monkie Kid.
My first impression after meeting him was the obvious "oh this guy's a bastard. deadbeat mentor.. I can't wait to see where this goes". But even from the start I had some suspicions [for clarification, I had seen a lot of clips and things in the fandom before I properly sat down and watched the show, so I had some idea of what was happening but didn't really know how it all connected yet] that he wasn't that simple.
My first inkling was when I noticed that since he was watching MK stumble into the Demon Bull Family --and even (I'm pretty sure this is the implication) guided him to the release of DBK-- he was there for that whole thing and even already knew it was going to happen. And sure, that was probably a clone Wukong and not the original but still. The fact that he knew it was gonna happen and then watched it happen... well it means... did not he let DBK be freed, then? And sure he tried to get MK to intervene but that was mostly for the staff, I think?
Like, in terms of plans it's not a bad one.
he used his staff to trap DBK under a mountain like 500 years ago
as centuries passed DBK's family worked on ways to free him
-- (Wukong was probably aware of this)
the day the Demon Bull Family are all set to free DBK he sends his hopefully-successor directly into the situation
-- only pressuring the kid to get involved after the staff is removed
this results in DBK being free and his successor getting his staff
his successor now has a legitimate reason to have the staff and use it
-- he even has immediate built-in baddies to face off with
-- (relatively low-scale ones, no offense to the Demon Bull Family)
--- [I've noticed that the Demon Bull Family can be used as a sort of power scale throughout the series to understand the threat level we're dealing with.
---- They're terrifying for a newbie Monkie Kid who doesn't know his powers yet and is mostly functionally still a regular mortal; but to an experienced MK they're not really so actively frightening anymore.
---- The first inkling we get that MK is about to stumble into something way out of his depth --LBD-- is when the Demon Bull Family is outclassed by this mysterious power.
---- They are used as a power scale in this show. The writers do it with LBD a few times and they even do it with Azure.
---- This is A Thing™, it's a legit literary tool.]
-- so MK gets experience with dealing with powerful demons and DBK is out in the world giving MK active incentive to keep learning
--- I have this sort-of pet theory that part of why Wukong wanted a successor was that he genuinely regretted having to lock DBK (the final remaining person in the world that he ever called a friend) away, so when PIF and RedSon got close to being able to release him Wukong just.. let them. But he knew he couldn't just let DBK wreak havok unchallenged (and I think part of why he used his staff specifically to lock DBK away was because it was his signal that he was hanging up his cape --so to speak-- and didn't want to be fighting endlessly anymore) so he set it up to have a successor immediately stumble in and deal with it. That way DBK can be free but also the new Monkie Kid can get some real job experience with it.
thus he has his new successor all set up with the staff and a nemesis right from the start
he may have underestimated the amount of effort it takes to learn all of his powers at once -oops, now he has a protégé rather than just a successor
But it took a few episodes before I took a good long look at his living situation and finally realized "oh, this is a depression-spiral wallow-pit". Like, it reads a lot like the house of a guy who lost something important (in real life this is normally a job or maybe a relationship) and has decided to rot in bed and play video games about it for the next month. Except he's an immortal, so it was 500 years of deliberate self-isolation from the outside world; interacting with no one but his own subjects. Like, at a glance it resembles a negligent college bro or pathetic bachelor(specifically of the "doesn't know how to do anything for himself" persuasion)'s rundown shitty appartment, like with the dishes stacked everywhere and empty chip bags lying about, that kinda energy. But then you look a little harder at it, and you look a little harder at him, and you realize that he's not all hands-off with the world out of sheer apathy --or at least, not regular apathy-- he backed off from everything because he is deeply profoundly exhausted. This isn't some young spry idiot that can't be bothered to care about anything but himself, this a guy who has been alive for at very, very least a millennium who can't muster up the wherewithal to care about anything anymore.
He has been fighting and fighting and he just can't do it anymore. This isn't "why would I care about anyone who isn't me?" this is The Void™, this is "my body isn't producing emotions right now, try again later". This is a guy distracting himself from his own immortality by pretending the world doesn't exist. This is a man who has had time to come to regret his own immortality. This is someone who is deeply profoundly alone. And is trying to keep it that way, because it can't hurt you to lose people you never had.
I am very very familiar with what a depression-spiral wallow-pit looks like. I even know what it looks like when a person who has ADHD is also extremely depressed. I live that.
Sun Wukong in LMK starts out the series completely miserable and trying his darndest to be mysterious and aloof enough to maintain the Hero persona that everyone expects from him so they can never ever get a look deeper. He keeps MK at a distance, and this hurts MK, but Wukong is doing it thinking it's better for both of them. I find it hard to stay mad at a man who has never known what he's doing when everyone expects him to know what to do, and who then hates himself for it.
It's hard to be mad at someone who is internally screaming "why am I in charge of this!?! who put me in charge of this?!?" while he desperately fumbles through a plan because he's somehow the only one who can.
He is basically the adult in the room who never wanted or expected to be the adult in the room. He lived so long he somehow collected enough experience that people just expect him to know what to do. Now he's got all of these people relying on him and he doesn't know how to explain that he punched and fumbled his way through everything up to this point. He also doesn't know how he did it. He has no clue what he's doing. Free him. Somebody get a real adult. He can't do this shit.
I look at the timeline of events for him. And I notice something. After being released from the mountain he was immediately conscripted into a quest, during this quest he bonded with the people he traveled with, but he also killed and/or locked away his former(?) friend Macaque and his former sworn brothers/friends of the Camel Ridge Trio; Peng, Azure, and Yellowtusk. Sometime after the Journey his fellow Pilgrims slowly died off one by one (there is a possibility that Ao Lie is alive, if only because a dragon would be more likely to have and he's the only one who has a descendant and not a reincarnation). Sometime after that DBK goes on a rampage and gets put under a mountain (kinda ironic tbh, the mountain-ee becomes the mountain-er.. or something) which Wukong uses his very special staff to do, after which he vanished completely from public eye. The timing of his departure suggests to me that these things are perhaps related. My conclusion is that after losing all of his friends one way or another, upon finally losing the last one, he is so lonely and guilty and upset that he decides to completely disengage. Basically, he has lost everything that mattered except for his home, so he goes back to that home and resolves to stay there. Can't lose something you never gained, so he's not taking his chances with getting attached to anyone else. Until MK comes along and whoops!
I think I have more thoughts about him but it's getting late and I'm struggling to organize them right now soo... leaving off here
#oooh yeah this is good#aaaaaa the feels as he learns to care about the world again over the span of the seasons#he was done for so long but MK busted down the doors all over again#he was so broken in s5 with everything#he couldnt lose it all again#OTL#i love wukong#he is such a great character#big mood with the 'how am i the only adult in this room?!' energy... big mood

I always figured Lego Monkie Kid season 5 would be an emotional gut punch, BUT THAT DOESN’T MEAN I WAS PREPARED!!!! Needless to say, months later, I am still not okay. 🙈

So how do I recover? By drawing a copious quantity of funny doodles until the next season comes out. Maybe that’s why they call it “copious”…it’s helping me cope, haha!

#;;;;;;;;;#season 5 still hurts! its been months since I watched itttt#gorgeous art <3<3<3<3#your pencil art is so soft and pretty#wow#lego monkie kid#lmk

LMK Villains because they are SO fun to draw! I did take some creative liberties on some of them (the show’s minifigure designs allow a lot of artistic freedom for its fan-artists 😆) so bear with me.

Lady Bone Demon No matter how she looks, her designs are always so freaking cool ☠️💙

Hundred-Eyed Demon Did I deviate a bit from the show’s design to emphasize his creepiness? Yes, yes I did. PS Design inspired by the Chinese red-headed centipede.

The sillies! I couldn't find much detailed description of Jin and Yin in JTTW except for having horns and residing in a mountain cave, so I took inspiration from the golden takin (sorry Yin, mwahaha!).

Six Eared Macaque Oh yeah, and MK's here too 😁

Princess Iron Fan You can't tell me Princess Iron Fan doesn't wear a big wire frame to shape her hair into horns everyday…either that or she's got some WICKED hair spray. Regardless, I like to think of her using her wind powers to do her hair while getting ready in the morning.

Red Son! I love him, what else is there to say? ❤️

Xiangliu/Nine Headed Demon I really liked his design in the show, though trying to design a human/snake/bird hybrid in my own style took me longer than expected. I also like how self-aware he (and the show in general) is, haha!

Azure Lion I’m late for the Azure Lion party but here he is! Mostly…I gave up after a while 😅
#!!!!!!!!!#these designs!!!!!!#oughgh they all look amazing#<3<3<3#so cool#aaa i cant even pick a particular favourite cos they are all so good#lmk#lego monkie kid

"Not with that attitude!"

I like to think that Wukong probably had his own "party clone" during his training with Shifu Subodhi. Probably played the guzheng way too loudly and way too late at night, haha!
