I am happy to announce that we will host a VIRTUAL convention on December 4, 2021, from 12 PM until 6 PM. I know what you all are thinking-- virtually? Yes, we at Pocket Con believe the health of the young people we serve and their families is of utmost importance. Due to the continued rise of Covid cases, we are not prepared to be back live thus we are bringing our second virtual experience. We have amazing things planned for you, including a digital convention space through Gather; live performances by some of the top performers in Blerd culture (Mega Ran, Microphone Misfitz); interactive panel discussions with some of the leading emerging black creative voices (Eve Ewing, Ashley A. Woods); Draw on Demand, which is a live digital painting and drawing experience with a roster of talented artists of color; live workshops for comic book creators, those who love cosplay, and for the first time, a Pocket Con salsa dance workshop! We are also bringing him back an array of trivia games to see just how well you know your black comic book facts (Name that Jam, Quarmega). We have a tik tok cosplay contest and youth drawing contest for those of you who are eager to show off your talents. We Planned this show out a year and am so excited to see it actualize! Th opening is tomorrow from 1:30-4:30pm as a part of their Wellness Sunday Series where there will be food, music by @djlokari, vendors, and a petting zoo y’all! — “It was the summer of George Floyd. People across the country and the globe were enraged by the acts of our law system murdering citizens in broad daylight and without remorse. There was no mercy, there was no police to protect and serve, and we were left to protect our own communities. Who do you call when the police murder? We called each other.” AMFM Presents a photo installation by Kiara Jade that documents the parallels between the George Floyd uprisings of 2020 and historical movements while examining its impact on Black communities in Chicago and food insecurity. When her neighborhood was left with shattered glass, burned interiors and exteriors, and the smell of her neighborhood charred, her way to process was to document what she saw. Through collage, Kiara Jade pieces together historical transgressions against the Black people using research, maps, and imagery from the Tulsa Race Massacre, Emmitt Till, and the Tuskegee Airmen, to engage in conversations around redlining, segregation, and food deserted communities on the Southside of the city. From June 1, 1921 to June 1, 2020, Kiara Jade discovered that history repeats itself, documenting scenes she only had seen in history books or documentaries. Through this series, she questions how we can [as a whole community] produce stories that inspire others to end the cycle of historical trauma? And asks, what does healing look like for you?
