Personal Entry
I am Death, and my story is of The Book Thief written by Markus Zusak. My purpose is to collect the souls of all those that have died. But everything changed, when the Book Thief strikes. I follow a girl Liesel, after her brother dies. My job as the reaper becomes much harder as they start bombing the towns. People died everywhere I go. I don’t try to stop it, because the humans need to be able to solve their own problems and live their own life. Even if I were to know when each human were to die, there isn’t much I can do to save them. When humans die next to each other, the feelings inside them grow stronger, for the better or worse is for them to decided. I can only collect their souls, not guide them. These decisions are for the humans to make. If they can’t make this decision them I must take their soul. The fear of death has lead many of them into hiding. This was the job of Hitler. When the time comes, I’ll be happy to take his soul. His doing has lead to the death of millions. Millions of people that had died with no purpose. All of them. Dead. They may have been able to change the world, but they’re gone now. Every death leads to a different outcome and the outcome will always be better with less deaths. The world would be a better place without me there to watch it.

This is what people see me as. The one that is ready to collect your soul once you die. The no emotion no feeling no pain, the one and only death. But everyone doesn’t know that I actually have a heart. I don’t even carry a scythe. I am as much as a human as you are. Except I don’t die, because I am death

Quote
Mankind must put an end to war before war puts an end to mankind.
This quote shows the out come of a war. When war breaks out, many people will die, and the only way to prevent a war for the people to understand what the results will be. They have not seen death like I have, but they will if they keep up the wars.

Quote
Living alone makes it harder to find someone to blame.
This quote would best explain the feeling that I would have when I must do everything alone. I am not able to have anyone at my side because one day, I will watch them die.

Journal Entry Cuatro
For three months, all is relatively peaceful in Molching, with the exception of more parades of Jews. Then, one morning Michael Holtzapfel is discovered to have hanged himself in a laundry. In his note, he asks his mother for forgiveness and says he is going to meet his dead brother in heaven. After the funeral, Liesel reads to Michael’s mother, Frau Holtzapfel, as usual. After months of scanning every passing group of prisoners, Liesel sees Max in one of the parades of Jews through Molching. She cries out to him, then joins him in the parade. He tells her he was halfway to Stuttgart when he was caught by the Nazis. A soldier warns Liesel to get away from the Jews, but Liesel ignores him, and when the soldiers drag her from the group she fights her way back in. I watched as Max and Liesel get whipped. The bombing is soon to come and I must wait there to collect all the souls of the victims. Rudy, Rosa, and Hans will die in the bombing, but not Liesel. She is saved because she will be in the basement of her house, reading over a book she’s written about her life. When the searchers pull her from the basement, she will scream for Hans, still holding her book. I follow as they take her out. The Book Thief continues to live, but for how much longer? Even I can’t tell when she will die because in the human world, there are miracles.

Journal Entry Tres
The death continues of the Jewish people. Hans finds his painting services in demand, as his neighbors need their blinds painted black for blackouts during bombings. Unfortunately, few of the town’s residents can afford to pay him, so they often barter for his services with food or cigarettes. This is often the problem with buying during the times of war.  War is very pricy and all the currents start to decline. A life’s earnings will only buy you enough to last a week. It would take a wheel barrow of money to be able to afford a loaf of bread. As the being I am, I have no need for food. I don’t know what food is. Food is what keeps the humans alive, but what about me. What is keeping me alive, or am I alive at all. Liesel accompanies Hans on his jobs, and when he is not painting he plays the accordion for them. One day they do work for some customers who pay them with Champagne, and Liesel vows never to drink Champagne again because it can’t ever taste as good again. I feel sorry for the humans that go through hardships. I watch as Han tries his best for Liesel but it may not be enough to keep them alive through the war. Han always tries his best to teach Liesel to read. The book thief must continue living for the sake of the next generations. Han probably knows he may not live to see it.

The Nazi army consist of many drafted soldiers that never wanted to be apart of a holocaust. When there is an army, there is war. When there is war, many people will die. There will be souls everywhere. This is the perfect world Hitler wants.

Which historical figure from your time period would you most like to meet? Describe the circumstances surrounding your meaning and explain what you would discuss.
I am death and I would love to meet the person who caused a lot of deaths in that time. Hitler! The one who started WW2, the one who caused sorrow, pain, and death. I would like to ask him what he thinks of me, what he thinks of death. Does he have feelings or is he just like me. No feeling and no emotions. I want to know why he would make my job so much harder by killing so many people. I really what to know if he is actually death.

What in life makes you the happiest?
Well, I am death if you don’t know already. What is happiness? I’ve never felt pain or sorrow, or even happiness. I have no feeling so I wouldn’t know what happiness is. But, I do have interests. You can say that Liesel’s life interested me a bit. She was such a good girl. Her life and her story is one of a handful of beautiful stories that I’ve been there to see. Her life would probably be what you call happiness in my eyes. Still the question is what makes me the happiest in life. I wouldn’t know about life because I’m death. But, Liesel’s life is happiness.

Do you feel your life is controlled by free will or fate? Choice and consequence or destiny? Explain using examples from your own story.
Life is controlled by fate. I know that for a fact because I am death. Everyone knows that you can’t life forever. Everyone has to die. You may have your own choice and consequence for what you do in life, but it is still destiny that will decide your fate. Everyone’s fate is death. I will be the one there to collect your soul when you die. You cannot stop yourself from dying. It is a natural thing that everyone must go through. I’ve seen many deaths in my time so I would be the one to tell you that fate and destiny will choose your path for you.

What causes you to have the most pain?
If you didn’t know already, I am death. I feel nothing. I have no emotions about anything. No feelings, no hatred, no happiness. I am blank. But the closest thing to pain that I have experienced is humans. Humans will forever haunt me till the end of time. Never have I ever felt pain from the humans dying but I’ve started to feel curious about being alive. I am not always the one that is heartless and carries a scythe around. I am death, but I still do have a heart.

The snowman was built for Max. Max must stay and hide in the basement and can’t come outside because it is unsafe for him. If the Nazis find him, he will die. For his sake, he must not be found. For the time being, he deserves to see what its like outside.

Quote
War would end if the dead could return.
This quote shows what has been done, can not be changed. The millions of people that have died because of Hitler. If they didn’t die, there would have been no need for war. If everyone just lived and never died, there would have been no wars.

Quote
Let go of yesterday. Let today be a new beginning and be the best that you can, and you’ll get to where God wants you to be.
This quote shows Liesel’s past and present. Even though she may have started off rough with the death of her brother, she was able to make new friends that she could teach.
