Willing experiment Hoshina. This one still has Captain Mina In this one Hosh willingly let's himself be used to try to further research; in this one he's turned INTO a mermaid (via Kaiju powers/DNA).

In this au? He gives up his sword. In his heart instead of becoming an Instructor he decides if he can't hold his blade then he will refuse to hold a gun and instead help in a way only HE can. In this case? It was being insane enough to leave his family behind to become a test subject.

Here Mina is training herself w/ Okonogi to learn about the kaiju as much as possible (cuz maybe she can understand why KAFKA STOPPED TRYING. Why did he give up? Why doesn't he respond to her texts anymore?) And this? This is where her and Hoshina meet. Seeing Hosh looking less human than he should be? Looking less for wear? Being treated more like a KAIJU than a human who gave himself up for the cause? Right then and there she pulls strings to move him to the third division. This does involve owing Narumi multiple favors. From here Mina does her best to lessen the experiments but sadly it's no dice.

She HAS to listen to the board of directors, if anything she should be 'thankful' that Director Shinomiya was willing to GIVE HER one of the most successful test subjects yet (after all, if they fall behind other countries research where will that leave Japan in the end?)

Eventually Hoshina loses the ability to survive outside contact with a source of water but as he seemingly looses his humanity his heart for Mina grows, especially when she loves him despite the monster he becomes- the creature he chose to be while he left the blade welder Hoshina Soushiro behind and Mina? She falls just as hard. Okonogi is along the way hearing both sides of the pinning and is absolutely DONE with them both but knows that in their line of work? A relationship between an on duty captain (long range or not) and a Test Subject just.. isn't a great looking outcome.

So she just quietly listens to the two of them whenever she has to monitor vitals and relay information between branches of the Third Division (and maintaining updates with Gen, gotta listen to ur superiors when they give the order. Plus. Mayhaps messy OkoGen. Idk. That relationship is Vibes)

Kaijuu#8 B side Headcannon

Narumi has various nicknames for Mina bcs his jealousy for her taking spotlight / popularity among captains. Also since Isao mention her so much (massive daddy issue)

He calls her Cannon chan, Bazooka chan, third captain chan, Missing link chan etc.

Hoshina, freshly joins the third division- feels the irk that commander of 1st division never call His commander properly. Even tho Mina doesn't mind it (she mostly ignore him outside battle field) the vice commander can't accept disrespect toward his captain that he revered so much.

After a joint operation between 1st and 3rd division, Hoshina challenged Narumi on small kaijuu subjugation practice duel. If he win, Narumi must address the third commander properly and never by nickname.

The duel caused a scene, Of course because Narumi made announcement so more ppl would see him beat the new cheeky vice commander- Mina's subordinate no less. He will never miss a chance to look cool and better than anyone.

He was sure he can beat him easy. He hold the record afterall

The girls at base squeal and made it as the two strongest kaijuu combatant in Japan fighting over Mina.

Mina never understand what the commotion about, being asked by one of the girl. Which type she prefer (for romantic partner), Narumi or Hoshina ?

She thinks it's about the type of combatant she prefer in a battlefield.

She gives serious answer that she like both of them (they are useful to clear path for her shooting)

With Narumi she feels that she can take it easy (since he will kill the Honju himself) but Hoshina brings the best out of her.

The girls squeal again, saying they both has same chance (to become Mina's lover) and it will be decided with this duel. Making things inaccurately more dramatic.

Of course as per cannon, Hoshina won the duel, beat Narumi by 1 point.

Ever since then Narumi never a dress Mina with nickname. Also this start of the bad relationship between Hoshina and Narumi as we know it.

oh to be trusted for once in his life. to have all the practice he’s done since he was a young child actually pay off for once. to have someone acknowledge him despite growing up in a household that only told him to give up on his dreams. to have someone give him a chance to find meaning in his life for the first time in years. of course hoshina would look at her like that. of course he would serve under her with his life at stake.

hoshina/ashiro agenda b-side edition!

i have so much to say about this but i’m so happy they went into further detail about this and hoshina’s thoughts prior to this moment… the fact that he genuinely thinks she’s playing a prank on him is so ouch

but then we get to the part where’s a sudden outbreak and we see how ashiro views him vs how he views himself because of being constantly put down by the people around him - even his own father, someone he desperately wants approval from. mina however, even before witnessing his skills on the field, already believes that he’ll be an asset just based on what she’s seen from joint trainings.

and mina probably knew the answer would be that he couldn’t take down the kaiju as he was, but she asked him anyway despite ebina’s orders on staying behind.

and her belief in him doesn’t go to waste because without his help and his skills, she wouldn’t have been able to kill of that kaiju. she was waiting on hoshina to ensure that child’s safety like he promised he would and she knew he would see it through

thinking. hoshina who has high alcohol tolerance but can’t stop thinking about his captain and ends up drinking more than he usually does (maybe him and okonogi are at an izakaya or some bar bc the beer don’t hit the same) and he just keeps going bc he’s facing the horrors of (supposed) one sided pining and yearning and he gets fucking BLASTED .

okonogi is like . girl… and calls mina and is like i know this is very unbecoming of a vice captain but captain ashiro please pretend this never happened 😭🙏 and then they head back together except mina is like ill just take care of him at my place and okonogi is like makes sense bc a drunk hoshina in public is crazy. also bc he’s started to become Physically Affectionate which is rare for hoshina and he’s just saying stupid shit abt how pretty mina is (“hey you look a lot like my GORGEOUS captain…”) (okonogi, trapped in the corner of the cab: hoshina you fucking IDIOT) mina is just like ???? hoshina care me.. ???
