An Unlikely Friendship betrayed

Mordecai being repressed as all hell and having feelings for the first time in his life for his straight best friend and not dealing with that very well is of course pure delicious angst

But even with an entirely platonic attitude to the tuxedo that doesn't necessarily mean Viktor is less hurt by what happened

Viktor is a man who has always wanted to feel useful and needed. As a farm hand, as a soldier, as a manual labourer, as a handyman for his neighborhood, and as a bootlegger.

But unable to return to the land of his birth, tossed aside by the US government after serving his purpose in the war, losing an eye when striking for fairer pay and conditions, abandoned by his wife who took his daughter with her, Viktor has had that sense of purpose snatched away from him too many times. He starts working for Atlas as much because it offers him a new one as much as any gratitude he had for getting him out of custody.

A BIG part of that new purpose became watching out for and guarding the back of a younger tuxedo cat, trying so hard to appear cold and capable to conceal the desperate lost man inside. For whatever reason, despite all his noise, nagging, criticism, prickliness,and their regular arguements, this unlikely partner he spends most of his time with somehow achieves that rare feat of being considered a friend by Viktor "Vinegar" Vasko

He makes sure he isn't taking needless risks, he goes out of his way to retrieve his eye wear from half way up destroyed stairs in a burning building,he tries to help him improve his weak social skills, he wears a tie he offers him for Christmas, and seemingly even agrees to wearing a matching suit at the 1926 New Years party despite hating formal wear

He has a practical purpose as a mechanic, gunman and the muscle of the Lackadaisy gang, while more personally his circle is not much bigger than Mordecai's.

A good hearted but senile neighbor in Mrs Bapka, a young bright eyed girl who fills the gap where his daughter was, and his eccentric partner and likely both best and only friend.

But then Atlas dies, and not long after one of those people puts a bullet in his one fully working knee. We don't know to what extent if any Mordecai explained himself beforehand, but we have to assume Viktor believes like most other people that is was pure spite and self interest as he left them for their biggest rivals.

Not knowing it was a desperate measure to protect him

Now neither of his legs work properly, he is relegated to tending the bar which he must feel is as bad as being benched completely, and following the pig farmers attack, in part due to the robbery of their weapons by that same ex-partner, he currently can't even do that

He is left sitting at home feeling broken and useless without a clear purpose to keep him going, to distract him from the many bad memories hanging over him

All because of the one person he thought, after so many years, wouldn't abandon him, needed him, would always have his back

Hey, Vicdecai shippers! All of you! Espesially those who ship one-sided Vicdecai and relish that Mordecai-the-repressed-gay-man angst! Don't you find you all miss something? Because I think you are.

Because Victor, the cis man Mordecai has that tragic crush on? Well. Imagine you are Victor. That cis slavic guy who has a wife and beloved beautiful kid.

Imagine you had them, but you are changed by The Great War now so irreversibly your wife cannot accept you, she cannot live with the man you are now. She left and she took your dear child, too.

And than you meet a person, a person who is more than fine with that war broken man you're now, a person who's always by your side, a person worth diying for... Hell, a person worth putting a fucking tie on a fucking New Year for!

But you can't love him. Because you have a wife and a kid. And he is a man. And you cannot love him, because men do not betray their wives and do not love other men, that is simply a rule and you now can't live without being true to some rules in your broken life, without orders of life...

And than that person betrays you and your found family. And you just start losing your purpose

I mean, seriously, not only is it the exact same style of suit in the same blue-grey colour distinct from everyone else, but they are standing in the perfect spots to be symmetrical each other

Mordecai must have known there was going to be a big group photo ahead of time and then carefully planned this.

Got the matching suits made to his and Viktors measurements, then most impressively convinced/nagged Viktor into cooperating (he may have taken off the tie and rolled up the sleeves but hey him playing along all is quite a compromise from Viktor "I hate dressing up" Vasko)

Mordecai honey your not as subtle as you think you are

Shoutout to @lil-zlatko @thisisanerror @nichenarratives for drawing my attention to just how much Mordecai seems to want Viktor to be symmetrical with him XD

Another post came out on BackerKit yesterday with information about the pins that were sold last spring, and again no word on what's up with the pins that were sold on BackerKit. Is everything okay with them?

We've been trying to get those previous pins delivered since last summer. The ramifications of the pandemic and the shuffling of work spaces must've affecting more factories than we thought cuz the things that are normally straightforward in merch production ran into a kajillion snarls we had to (sometimes literally) manually untangle to get our products into customers' hands.

Basically, think up every nightmare scenario that could happen to a pin and apply it to those chevrons. It's been the cause of many sleepless nights as Tracy, Spike, and I tugged at the ropes as hard as we could. What should've taken 3 months max turned into 9 months of hell.

As for the BK pins, we were informed there was a new production process that would make them look better, but it required totally reconfiguring the files we had into something better suited.

It's been a bit overwhelming getting a studio off the ground like this, and there's nobody who wants those things out the door more than us (It's one less thing to worry about). We've been trying to get appropriate help with the tasks, but sometimes getting assistance from one person can turn into needing help from another two, and so on and so forth.

You end up having to pick and choose where the majority of your focus goes when each task eats up at least 10% of your time, and there's more than 10 things to do in a day (including eating and sleeping). And that's while delegating as much as you can.

One of these days we'll have folks who can take those tasks on all on their own without it requiring a full week of individual focus. But that'll take time to manifest.

TLDR: we're working on it, we haven't forgotten, but we are extremely exhausted.

@lil-zlatko Just thinking about the fact that Viktor's bad knee probably flared up at times during or after physically demanding jobs Mordecai and he went on. That Mordecai was probably concerned when it did but expresses it through fussing and nagging as usual

That when Mordecai kneecapped Viktor he must have knowingly aimed for the "good knee" because he knew doing that was the most effective way to force him to retire and get him out of danger or the worst case scenario of Marigold ordering Mordecai to take him out. Something he would probably not be able to do and would blow his cover immediately

Wondering if the "breakup" was an angry loud shouting match like most of their arguements building up to the shot or if it was Mordecai calmly and logically explaining to Viktor why it was in his best interest to retire but the stubborn Golem simply not listening as usual and so he has to fall back on "plan B"

The strange mix of selfishness and selflessness in the decision. Selfish because it was done to avoid Mordecai's heartbreak (platonic or otherwise depending on how you interpret Mordecai "repressed" Heller's feelings for the big guy) in the future because he can't see the only person he cares about in St Louis other than Atlas die as well.

Selfless because he knows Viktor will likely hate him forever for it and its clearly the mindset of "He will hate me and I will probably never see him again but you know what at least he will still be alive and I am willing to live with that ( he thinks). I want him to be safe even if it leaves me alone and unhappy

The man is horrified that VIktor is not only still working at Lackadaisy but got shot during the pig farmers raid which makes it all for NOTHING

But he has to keep all that hidden (literally hiding his face) because Asa "dickhead" Sweet is sitting right next to him and he can't let him catch on
