when colonizers fuck up the land in multiple different ways, the native people are going to look like all knowing benevolent beings when in fact they are just logical people that know if the things you are doing are causing problems maybe you should stop doing it. also some materials and techniques work better than others.
ecological problems of colonialism also have more to do with the exploitative nature of colonialism than with foreigners lacking an elf-like connection to the land imo

I am. get in.
so many comments on that post are like "i don't mind, as long as the person singing is good. otherwise, don't."
imagine wanting to sing along to your favorite song on the radio beside your best friend and you can't, not bc they hate singing, but bc you're not "good enough." villains.

If I say "I'm never going to get that feedback because this fandom isn't super huge there is no way anyone hard of hearing will see this" will it manifest getting feedback
What if Ricky's parents were hard of hearing and the "vow of silence" was actually them deciding to no longer try to fit into hearing society and appear hearing? What if their kid losing their voice made them rethink and realize that they would rather be an example to their kid of embracing disabilities and accommodations instead of just suffering though? What if they said "it's like a vow of silence" to little Ricky to make it seem like some sort of superhero thing? Like a vow of honor? I'm trying to fit that line into a broader context like I do with a lot of details in RTC that don't make sense, because I'm a stubborn bitch who wants to challenge herself.
If you are hard of hearing or deaf please let me know if this works or not. I would really appreciate the feedback.

Hey, so I decided to post the idea I recently sent you on the ride the cyclone reddit, to try to get feedback from any hard of hearing or deaf fans. Since child of deaf parents Ricky is your original headcanon, I was wondering if you would like me to credit you for that. I wanted to check before doing so because I know reddit can be a cesspool one may not want to be known in.
No need to credit me, I don’t own the idea

pretty sure Ultraman died too because he got thrown in a black hole but idk maybe he'll come back
Only one person died. Only one singular person. In a superhero movie! The type that love to throw around casualty counts like it’s all a big game, waving off 70 people being killed in a handful of days like it’s no big deal, yet only ONE PERSON died.
And he was mourned. Superman cried for him—this stranger who gave him free falafel and, while facing death, told him that he still believed in him. Metamorpho, this cold-seeming man who is being actively blackmailed to do this, breaking down and taking the risk to believe in Superman, too, because seeing someone murdered right in front of him is devastating enough to take the risk. The newspapers run a front page article talking about how they’re going to memorialize him.
The stakes didn’t have to involve real actual loss of life. The threat of it was enough to convey the severity of the situation. Because human life is that important. All life is that important, at least to Superman who goes out of his way to save dogs and squirrels.
(Hawkgirl does kill SHEIN Netanyahu but genocidal dictators don’t count as human beings lol.)

In your Ricky backstory post, you suggested Ricky's parents being hard of hearing. What if the "vow of silence" was actually them deciding to no longer try to fit into hearing society and appear hearing? What if their kid losing their voice made them rethink and realize that they would rather be an example to their kid of embracing disabilities and accommodations instead of just suffering though? What if they said "it's like a vow of silence" to little Ricky to make it seem like some sort of superhero thing? Hi! So, honestly, my coda!ricky headcanon has always been more about following the broad strokes of canon (specifically ricky's family using sign language) rather than following the exact wording. So this isn't really an angle I've thought of before. I'm also hearing, and I'm not an expert in deafness or Deaf culture, and so I feel a little underqualified to fully answer this question. But i'll try to use the knowledge I do have to point you in the right direction:
I've seen the term "voice off" (or voice-off, idk if the hyphen changes the meaning at all) used to describe a lack of talking out loud in a Deaf context. My understanding is that it can be used to refer to people (i.e. "being voice off" meaning not talking out loud) as well as referring to environments (i.e. a "voice-off environment" being a place where it's expected people will communicate nonverbally instead of talking)
There are complex reasons behind being voice-off and why not talking at all is easier or more comfortable for some Deaf people. This is probably something you should research yourself if you want to expand on ricky's parents' backstories in this way.
I have never heard of the phrase "vow of silence" being used in a Deaf context. Or in a superhero context. Actually now that I think about it, outside of RTC the only context in which I've ever heard that phrase has been talking about fictional monks. I'm not even sure if real monks do it.
So basically I'm not sure if it's even remotely possible to make a literal, serious vow of silence make sense here. Even if you interpret Karnak's words a little more loosely and make it so that "vow of silence" was just like, a weird thing ricky's parents said & not serious, I'm still not sure it would make sense. Genuinely I think this is something you should ask a Deaf person about, because I have no clue and I'm not going to try to speak on a subject I don't fully understand.
I admire what you're trying to do here but I think sometimes you really do have to look at one paragraph that was thoughtlessly shoved into the canon material and say "okay i cannot take all of this at face value And have it make sense. if i want this to make sense i have to pick and choose which parts of it to acknowlege"

i dont know how to say this in a clever eloquent way but i feel like a lot of rtc fans are very bad at judging exactly how weird ricky is. like, yeah, there's the alien catgirl thing... but when it comes to his disability, and his characterisation & backstory in relation to that, i think a lot of people lack a frame of reference for what "normal" could mean in this context and thus misjudge where everything else falls in comparison to that
like for example, ricky naming his mobility aids? not very weird! many disabled people do this. i don't know exactly how common this is but if you're in disabled communities, you're probably going to encounter it. i get so weirded out when i see people talking like "it's in-character for ricky to have named his crutches because he's such a weird guy!" because it's literally not a big deal. it's a pretty unremarkable thing. he was not the first guy to come up with that idea and honestly he probably didnt even think of it himself sorry.
on the other side of the spectrum - ricky's parents taking a vow of silence in response to him being unable to speak? that shit is way weirder than anyone gives it credit for. i know everyone takes it as a given that ricky's parents are Eccentric and Quirky, you know with the 14 cats, but taking a vow of silence goes beyond that to the point where it borders on unrealistic. that is, if you interpret at face value and don't look into any potential implications, a huge life change with... no explanation for how it would benefit their son.
i have a whole long post about that alone because there are several more reasons tat this part doesn't make sense. and i kind of wish as a fandom we would lean more toward a "im aware that canon has made a decision, but given that it's a stupid-ass decision i've elected to ignore it" approach to this, rather than laughing it off with "yeah ricky's parents sure are weird". because again, this is not a Weird Quirky Detail on the same level as the potts family having 14 cats, this is extreme. yes, i'm aware that this line wasn't really supposed to be taken seriously; i simply think that if the writers wanted us to not take it seriously, then they should have written something less serious, and come up with a joke that was actually funny.
ricky being a Weird Guy is one of the things i like about him, but like... before we all sit around having fun laughing about how he's Such A Weird Guy we should actually do enough research to know whether something is actually Weird and Quirky in the way we think it is. because if you see something youre not familiar with and your first thought is "i bet that's weird and quirky" then you may simply be misjudging. okay peace out
