It’s the last year of camp, and the two of them are sprawled out on the log under the big oak tree where they carved their names the first year they met. That first year they were fourteen, four hot summers ago—long enough to survive each wave of adolescence. The scrappy outsider clinging to the taller, blonde, more popular girl for dear life, because Abby offered her scraps of kindness when no one else bothered to. That second summer when they got too close, swapping secrets, making friendship bracelets, Abby trying to braid Ellie’s hair even though she wouldn’t sit still. Swimming in the pond after dark and getting caught, and sitting in the counselor’s office in wet clothes. Still grinning. That third summer it fell apart, because Abby had a boyfriend—not a serious one, just a camp one, but still—and Ellie suddenly found a million things to hate about her. Her too-loud laugh. That crooked front tooth. The way she drank chocolate milk with a straw. She hated her in every way and made sure Abby knew it. 

And now, the last summer, with graduations past and college looming, whatever Ellie was mad about matters a whole lot less. So they sit and Abby tries to braid her hair again, but Ellie’s too impatient, the touch too light and not enough. Abby says she won’t forget about her when she goes off to college. Ellie calls bullshit, of course she will. She’ll meet some boy and make new friends and forget she ever existed. 

When Ellie says ‘blood pact,’ she’s joking at first. ‘If you promise, show me you really mean it.’ And Ellie always carries her knife, the one she used to carve their names, feels the weight of it in her hands, and knows she’s not joking anymore. So Abby makes her go first, if she really wants to go through with it. Gets Ellie to lie back on the log so she’s looking up at the sky, slots into the place between her legs, pushes her shorts up just a little, where no one else will see it. 

The cut stings like it was always meant to. Like she was waiting for it and only finally now feeling the full weight of it. Abby wipes a thumb over it, just that small place that drips down her thigh, and sucks it into her mouth without thinking. Sweet and coppery, and then she presses her lips to the wound. 

Ellie’s eyes squeeze shut and she sees the sun burning through her eyelids, and her hands find Abby’s hair, and she doesn’t know what the name for this is, but she knows that she’ll think about it for the rest of her life. 

Abby lets her do the same. She winces at the touch, firm muscles tensed. She should be the stronger one, but she isn’t. She feels it so much more deeply. Hers will scar where Ellie’s won’t, and every lover that sits between her thighs will notice the mark. Some will ask her about it; most won’t. 

When it’s over, Ellie just rests there, chin in Abby’s hip, both of them breathing slowly. Both of them feeling blood harden and crust over as the air gets cooler. Crickets growing louder than birds.
