A love story in ice 💧

Sunrise over the new eruption site on the big island of Hawaii, as seen from the sea. The land seen in this photo was all created the day before, making it the planet's newest! 3 weeks later this exact boat was hit by an underwater lava explosion, injuring 23 people. Thankfully nothing like that occurred on my voyage. It was an intense experience though, first getting up at 3am for a 4am departure. Heading out in pitch black in the roughest seas as only Hawaii can dish up. Getting hit by waves coming out of the darkness, got totally soaked, camera gear got trashed! Getting closer the whole sky was lit up red with the raging fire and volcanic smog from fissure 8. The sliver moon was out too, all so pretty, and next thing we're getting hit by more waves but the water is boiling hot! I took a respirator that I used to use in the lab printing thick film metal pastes on solar cells. Was so glad I did, because after dealing with the sea sickness of the trip, the smell of the sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide was so nauseating, I had to concentrate so hard not to vomit. Put the mask on and couldn't smell it at all, and there were about 5 people all around me being sick into buckets, while I slowly recovered with my respirator. Where this new land is, used to be a massive bay, 2 villages and a freshwater lake- all gone in the 3 days prior. I heard about people whose homes are surrounded by lava. At that point they pray for complete destruction, because insurance won't cover a lava surrounded house even though it is just as unusable once surrounded by razor sharp lava field! 🔥🔥🔥 🔥🔥🔥 🔥🔥🔥

When I visited Hawaii's big island this year, I saw sea turtles everywhere. Everywhere! Then on the last day of my trip I went to this black beach which is famous for turtles. And of course there wasn't a single turtle there! 🐢🌴🌴🌴🌴

Sometimes in life I reckon you need to escape the forest so as not to be blinded by the trees.. One of the things I love about getting above the geography is that you get to see for real how amazing and beautiful and varied our landscape is, and why wouldn't you want to preserve that? In Australia at the moment there is a big conservative push toward pulling out of the Paris agreement and this pendulum swing us replicated elsewhere, it's a global thing. It's important we don't let these guys win. Let's relegate the anti-science dinosaurs to the dustbins of history and live in harmony with our planet. Am I right or what? Anyway, enough blabbing.
