Plant of the Day
Sunday 10 March 2024
Here the new red foliage of Photinia × fraseri 'Red Robin' (Christmas berry) is creating a dramatic effect. This evergreen shrub or small tree will tolerate pruning and so can be planted to create a hedge and is ideal for an urban environment. Clusters of creamy-white flowers appear in spring if the plant is left unpruned.

Chicago Bound
Here's Amtrak number 365, the Blue Water, headed out of Kalamazoo; it's accelerating after its station stop there and will soon reach 110 MPH. This line is the former Michigan Central (New York Central) and now owned by Amtrak itself.

With the sailing season locally winding down, I cannot fully express how thrilled I am to have accepted a position crewing in the Hebrides next summer. More hours toward eventual Masters Papers? Yes, please. Weeks at sea without being tethered to, or even having access to, email? YES.

Plant of the Day

In a car park I saw this exotic looking Paeonia cultivar (tree peony) was flowering. These are long lived shrubs that need a sheltered and sunny position. I hope some other visitors to this shopping complex noticed these wonderful flowers.

Blue Water
Posting a few images from the Chicago area lately; this one is from Roosevelt Road of course. Given that I'm standing there relatively late in the PM, I would put my money on the Blue Water (two of the Michigan trains were turbos: this and the St. Clair, but the time does not seem correct for that).
The train set is the RTG, built in France for Amtrak. This was some of the first equipment the passenger corporation received after its birth in 1971. And I believe that is that a bridge for Taylor Street in the distance (no longer extant).
