truly one of the wildest subtextual/metaphorical exchanges in utena which is admittedly a very high bar but it’s just such an unhinged way for her internalised homophobia and destructively self-sabotaging denial to get called out that i still sometimes think about it years later

Thinking about how incredible it is that Anthy got a happy ending. The entire world was telling her that she was evil. She wasn't the perfect archetypal victim, she was coerced into perpetuating further harm, even she believed she'd somehow brought the abuse upon herself. She got to be imperfect and the narrative still said she deserved happiness.

From the audience's perspective its obvious that she didn't deserve anything that was done to her, but from inside the narrative, from her perspective, that idea was revolutionary. The point of abuse is to make you believe you are broken and unlovable, whether that is because of the things done to you, or because of something you are. Recovering is difficult, but simple; it's believing you are worthy of healing. This show says you are.
