fic rec time!

this one is just… wow. the other two recs i gave were fics that were pretty high in the hit-count, so i thought i’d give some extra love to this one because it absolutely deserves more recognition.

the fic is called zero-sum game and it’s by roadtripwithlucifer. they might as well be kohei horikoshi themself because damn that plot!!!

this fic is perfect if you’re looking for a long fic jam-packed with plot, porn, angst, domestic fluff, action, a wonderful author, and much more. and who am i kidding, i know you’re looking for that!

here’s the summary:

“It’s been four years since Deku dropped off the face of the earth. Katsuki knows he’s going to find him. He’s so close to him, he can almost touch him.

(Unknowingly, he does.)”

just a warning now, there are manga spoilers, as the story is set after chapter 305, so all the events leading up to that chapter are mentioned in detail. if you don’t want manga spoilers, i encourage you to stop reading this rec and to not read the fic either.

(also, tbh, it’s really hard to tell what’s a spoiler and what’s the author’s imagination sooo if you are willing to take that risk i highly recommend it.)

anyways, it’s pretty much about pro-hero katsuki searching for midoriya after he left everyone letters and then disappeared. then, he meets someone… and it all goes from there.

the sheer brilliance of roadtripwithlucifer is clearly evident. after every chapter, you can enjoy memes about the chapter and nice heartfelt authors notes that i thoroughly enjoyed. there are so many descriptions and details in the plot that literally are genius material and it’s just… wow. it’s really just wow.

of course, a lot of the plot has been disproven by the actual manga, but it really matters little to nothing at all because of how amazing everything is. i cant say any more than that because it would spoil things, but damn it is good!

fanfic dealbreakers/turn-offs

i wanted to make this to, idk, hope that i’m not just overly picky with what i read? or idk i just want to share lol! but here are some things that immediately turn me off from reading a fic. like i just can’t bring myself to continue.

FIRST PERSON POV. unless the original source (ie. book) is in first person, such as the Carry On series, i simply cannot read first person. i really don’t know why; maybe it just gives me too much y/n vibes lolz.

NO SPACINGS IN BETWEEN PARAGRAPHS. i mean, come on. there’s just too much going on and i feel suffocated.

BAD GRAMMAR. this is actually the worst one. yes, i’m one of those annoying grammar people. but if you’re putting out literary content make sure the grammar is right !! ofc i understand if english isn’t a first language, but i’ve found that this is often not the case. the worst thing is the wrong ‘your’ or ‘there’.

OVERLY POETIC WRITING. this is kind of specific and makes me feel like an asshole, but i just can’t read the writing that is obvious that the author is trying to make it seem fancy. does that make any sense?! i’m a huge sucker for humor and casual fics, so maybe that’s why. it just feels like i’m reading an assignment for school, not a fun fanfiction. a fic can be phenomenal without having that type of writing, and those are the ones i love the most.

SHIFTING PERSPECTIVES WITH NO BREAKS. this one is actually a huge one for me lol. i can’t stand when the perspective goes back and forth between separate people with no breaks, whether it’s a chapter break, line break, etc. i guess i’m saying i don’t like third person omniscient writing.

MULTIPLE REPEATED PUNCTUATION MARKS. okay this is insanely specific but it gets me for some reason. when it’s like “hi!!” with the double exclamation points or “what??”, etc, it just feels so unprofessional to me. and not saying that fanfic writers are “professionals”, but it’s just one of those things that you wouldn’t see in real books.

there’s definitely more but i can’t think of them right now. and by no means am i trying to discredit or diminish the efforts of writers that do these things in their fics!! this is all purely my personal opinion and the style of writing that i enjoy. as you can probably tell, it’s hard for me to find fics that fit all my standards lol. but it makes it worth it because the ones i find are insanely good and i reread them like all the time !!

back with another fic rec!

i didn’t think this is something that i would do regularly, but i might just have to start because the amount of fantastic fics i read just need to be appreciated.

so this is another bakudeku fic, and it’s called Incinerate by KyuukaKoinu on ao3. when i first saw this fic, i was very intimated by the 480k word count. i usually limit myself to a max of about 150k, so this was definitely new for me. however, i was just too intrigued to pass it up. and boy am i glad i didn’t.

just want to put a bit of a tw at the top so it’s seen, but tw for graphic depictions of violence, topics surrounding domestic and child abuse and sexual assault, dealings with PTSD and other forms of trauma, and more. i highly recommend looking at the tags and the warnings before each chapter if any of these things are triggering to you :) proceed with caution!

also a little warning, there are very minor spoilers from the mha manga, but mainly just one spoiler that is kind of a major plot point in the fic. if you’re bothered by that id maybe think twice about reading, but honestly, i feel like almost the entire mha fandom already knows about this spoiler lol. you probably know what spoiler i’m talking about ;)

but back to the rec!

here’s the summary:

“Bakugou Katsuki is a workaholic cop hell bent on never dating again because it's too much of a 'distraction'.

Enter Midoriya Izuku:

A walking contradiction that is giving Katsuki an actual lethal goddamn migraine along with a mysterious set of arson crimes that walked right into town with him. But the most frustrating part is that Katsuki can't seem to get his fucking mind off either.”

it’s essentially a cop au but that is completely putting it very lightly. please hear me out yall because i am going to gush about this fic.

holy shit yall. i don’t even have words. i swear i just finished an entire novel. the plot was amazing. you can really tell the amount of research the author put into the fic. it has so many mysterious elements and cliff hangers and things that just make you feel like you have to keep reading. the amount of times i gasped from the plot twists. sometimes i literally had to put my phone down and scream a little bit because of something that happened.

the writing is nothing short of absolutely brilliant. i’ve never cried so much from a book. i genuinely shed so many tears from this book. the writing of the characters is extraordinary — especially this one character, who was written so well that i had so many vividly negative emotions towards them. i literally felt rage, disgust, and other horrible things as if i was actually witnessing the events. you guys will know which character i’m talking about when you read it lol. the empathy and pain i felt for the characters is insane. i’ve genuinely never been emotionally affected this much by a fic or even any book. the amount of nights i spent awake crying in my bed while reading this fic lmao.

the issues that are addressed are also incredibly important. it sheds so much light on toxic and abusive relationships and the way they can affect others. the relationship certain characters have with their parents is very real and something that needs to also be informed about. the educational aspects of this fic are just beyond important and should just be taken seriously.

to praise it further, you get equal amounts of slow burn, domestic fluff, angst, and smut. when i say this fic has it all, this fic has it all. the smut also gets preeetty kinky sometimes so if ur into that, have fun! if ur not, and i sort of stray away from the extremely kinky stuff, do not be deterred!! it is so so so worth the read! the crippling sexual tension between katsuki and izuku is something i always look for in bakudeku fics and yall, this one did not disappoint.

i’m not doing this fic any justice. i don’t have the right words to put it in the light it deserves. please, please give this fic a read and leave some kudos. ill link it here too:

genuinely one of the best bakudeku fics and fics in general i’ve ever read in my life. seriously, if the names were changed, i really think it could be sold as a novel. this fic has EVERYTHING. here’s the summary:

“There he was: sitting splay-legged on the altar, one muddy combat boot propped up on the edge, with a self-satisfied grin on his face and a relaxed aura, in spite of the war raging outside.

Izuku wasn’t sure what he’d expected to see his first day evacuating humans from the Rapture zone, but it sure as hell wasn’t a Demon with the same goal.

A story about falling, in more ways than one.”

to add on, it’s essentially a fantasy au with angel izuku and demon bakugou. plenty of other characters make appearance, with your average bakusquad interactions! the world building is SPECTACULAR — seriously, you won’t even feel like you’re reading a bakudeku fan fiction. i came for a regular fic, but i very quickly became immersed into the beautiful writing. and yes, the smut is fantastic. i know ur thinking it.

there are also a lot of deep, sort of philosophical topics addressed, the main one being, of course, religion. it offers an entirely new perspective on western religion and really just made me think.

the fucking ANGST, y’all. the FLUFF. the SMUT. it’s really all there. i cannot recommend this fic enough. god it’s really just that good.
