What do you think would be Weiss' feelings about Yang consistently getting better grades than her ?

Ohhhh boyyy do I have thoughts on this

For one obviously I think she’d be kinda really upset about it

I think yangs a huge point of insecurity for Weiss for a really long time and I think this would really add to that in a bad way

A lot of Weiss’s problems in the beginning is insecurity

She has worked VERY hard throughout her life to be good at everything she does, she’s had to, that’s the standard she’s held to,

and she’s worked probably even harder to be good at this

Because she JUST started doing this, she doesn’t know what she’s doing, she just got here!! She had to fight a huge fucking knight thing just to be here!!! She’s putting blood sweat and tears into every second of this but she is still new to it and nothing can fix that

Yang however

Has done this her entire fucking life, she’s a god damn legacy- which you KNOW early Weiss was obsessed with

She’s got crazy experience and general knowledge and she has it so casually

Yang simply doesn’t have to work anywhere near as hard as Weiss does to be as good as she is

And even with being very good at what they’re doing yang is also well liked!! She’s popular!!! She knows how to talk to their peers in a way Weiss feels totally alienated from

For a character defined by her loneliness to stare at a character defined by her relationships with others

And it’s made so much worse by the fact that yang, is in the beginning, the only person on her team she had any hope of getting along with

Ruby’s the leader which is a position Weiss is gunning for even after Ruby gets it, she also blew her up, shes also 2 years younger then her which is understandably infuriating when she’s made the leader, they have seemingly nothing in common at first there’s no hope

Blake fucking hates her and her whole bloodline ZERO hope there

Yang is NORMAL she got in the normal way, she’s well liked, would be great for networking, she’s good at their job AND communicating while doing it, she gets along with pretty much everyone

EXCEPT WEISS!!

To yang this is just some racist rich girl who’s a total dick to her little sister for no reason, like yeah it is weird they made the girl 2 years younger then everyone the leader but that’s NOT RUBYS FAULT!!! And Weiss is her age just totally being so rude to Ruby for no reason, AND she doesn’t get along with yangs team partner, who yang actually likes (not to mention Weiss doesn’t get along with Blake cause she’s like fantasy racist, something yangs clearly not chill with)

And to Weiss this girl is the absolute representation of all of her insecurities when it comes to proving she belongs here and when it comes to her social isolation

This would just be the nail in that coffin

Weiss would be mad because grades were probably the one thing she thought she had over yang and now she has nothing and it’s a slap in the face of how god damn hard she’s been working

Not that she’d actually vocalize it, depending on if this is before or after the white fang reveal, if it’s after she’s probably upset about it but can deal with it alright if it’s before she’s def PISSEEDDDD

This isn’t me saying yang is perfect and that everyone should be soooo jealous of her or anything

I’m saying Weiss is one of the best written characters

And everything she does makes perfect sense

And that canonically

Weiss starts out as a lonely socially isolated insecure teenager girl, who was abused in a way that made it incredibly hard for her to navigate socializing, desperate to prove herself, working as hard as possible to do everything right

And she’s constantly standing next to the canonically popular, hot, tall, “party girl” character who’s been doing this all her life, who also is immediately super chummy with both of Weiss’s other teammates with seemingly no effort and on top of it had good grades

If I was Weiss I would’ve fucking strangled yang

AND she drives a motorcycle id fucking kill her

Weiss is so strong for eventually getting along with her it’s a huge sign of how fucking mature she is to constantly be improving herself as she does in the first seasons

Which I think is super because of the fact that yangs SOOOO older sister coded

And Weiss lovesss an older sister figure

Like yeah did it definitely add to her hate at first that Ruby and yang had a relationship she’s never had with her sister? Yeah for sure

But the SECOND that they slip into friendship they’re solid cause yang also loves a younger sister figure and Weiss is SUCH a middle child

Moral of the story is that I think it would really frustrate Weiss but depending on when it’s brought up and stuff she’d probably honestly take it really well cause she’s really good at dealing with this kind of thing at this point

After having to acknowledge that racism is wrong and your entire family’s evil and the way you’ve been thinking about the world your whole life is wrong and evil and needs to change

This is probably something she gets over kinda quick

Not to mention that salem (pre everything) and Blake are both super kind and loving individuals who were finally freed from a horrible situation only to get comfort and understanding from one (1) person who they loved more then anything and anyone in the world combined and who loved them right back and then that person DIED and suddenly everything was reduced to collateral in her eyes

Salem decided to trick the gods to bring back her love and blake Decided to kill neo over what happened

Both intensely against their morals

Or the morals of the people they are when the person they love is alive

And Weiss is still suffering because she Had to VERY VERY LITERALLY pull Blake from the edge

I love the slight difference with it, like summer just jabs at her

it’s slight but with a force to show she’s mad at Raven, that they’re not on good terms like raven is seemingly pretending they are, which is what raven does every time she sees her family, despite them CLEARLY being mad at her, she never wants to acknowledge what she’s done or why they’re mad she always seems to want them to ignore it with her, pretend like nothing ever happened

It’s part of ravens character as a coward, she also wants to run from the consequences of her actions, and confrontations with the people she loves and hurt

With summers GIF, raven starts out with her arms crossed and her shoulders tensed and she’s looking away from summer, she’s defensive she’s not acknowledging her wrongs or anything

But then summer walks up and purposely jabs her, you can see it it’s with intention and it’s actually a bit out of her way to do, by the way her shoulders move towards raven to do it

And then ravens eyes are on summer, her shoulders drop, she watches her move away from her with much more vulnerable eyes

I don’t know how I personally interpret that, tho it is really really important I think, maybe…. I think in this instance, that it’s raven thinking maybe they are moving on, like summer was mad at her and now they can be fine, that they’ll start ignoring the problems again together

Also you can’t really tell but from how her head moves it looks like summer was looking right at raven until she jabbed her, like they swap looking at each other, maybe she was waiting for raven to say something or react or do anything but be defensive and the jab was a last minute decision out of anger

However with Yang

The beginning of the GIF raven is already vulnerable, and SO vulnerable, she looks sooo upset, and shocked to, she’s got wide eyes and she looks almost frozen in place and she’s fully facing Yang as Yang moves towards her,

And what happens in this one isn’t that Yang went out of her way to jab raven, it’s that Yang just walked through her, she wasn’t looking at raven she didn’t even glance at her when she started to walk into her she just kept walking, she didn’t care raven was there

It’s framed like it’s ravens job to move out of the way not yangs job to go around her or meet her there

And after the fact, raven eyes are to the floor

Not just away from Yang but to the floor, like straight down

She looks near to devastated and clearly ashamed

I 100% believe raven loves yang, she loves all of her family/team (same thing, maybe not ruby, maybe that’s more a “reminder of what you lost” kinda thing to her)

If she didn’t care about them this isn’t how this would go

But she does

But she’s also a coward, and she leaves Yang there, just like Yang said she would

I feel like alot of people who call yang a bad sister forget Yang literally expressed wanting some independence from ruby at the very beginning of the show, it isn't a bad thing

Although very ironic the first time she is truly separated from her sister (v4) it came from horrible circumstances

People who call yang a bad sister are awful, i know people expect fucking Angel like behavior from mom or older sister characters and I hate it, its so so annoying

And people expect the same shit in real life too but I’m still just annoyed when I go on fun little escape reality things and see that bs

At the very least it’s a flat out miss interpretation of Rwby and the characters in it and it’s one I hate

I would loveee to talk about how Weiss just lost one of her closest friends and had to force her body not to react or go into shock or process that because she had to realize and act on the fact that she was the only person who was going to stop herself from losing another one

She’s literally dragging her it’s awkward and difficult and Blake’s not helping at all

Weiss is looking down at a void that just took yang from them as she’s desperately pulling Blake away from following her and it’s sooo crazy and sooo heartbreaking

Can we talk about how Weiss just knows she has to get to Blake? She knew she'd be so distraught that she'd try to yeet herself off the ledge after Yang. Weiss was at her side the second Blake dropped to her knees.

She was there for Yang when she had a breakdown about Blake, and she was there for Blake when she thought she'd lost Yang for good. 💙❄️

Talking about things the girls should have learned at Beacon: languages. I know there's no consensus about the languages that exist in Remnant but if they were different I think Blake would have an easier time on that because of her time on the WF which gathered faunus around the whole world.

Personally, I doubt she would even disclose that at the beginning of Beacon to not raise suspicions about how she learned so many but I bet she would let her teammates know about it the worst possible way .

I personally have always hc that at least yang knows Chinese or whatever versions of Chinese they’d have in remnant

Kinda goes hand in hand with the fact i always assumed yangs name was Xiao long(first name) yang(last name) and that she went by yang because it was easier for people to say because that’s how all of the people I’ve ever been friends with have been like

Lots of people I know or have met go by different names in English speaking places because they don’t want there’s being butchered and I thought that’s what was going on with yang for a while

I can’t really say anything on it tho cause I’m not Chinese and It’s just not my place to speak on I can only speak from my personal experiences

I could see them all knowing/ learning French or Spanish.. I know so many people who know French And Spanish

Im def the worst at languages in my whole family tho so if anyone else who’s big on them or has any thoughts on this kinda thing and knows more then me id love to hear about it

Thank you for pointing out yang also helps blake out when she needs help or to chill, recency bias has the fandom thinking it's only ever going to be blake helping yang when the core of their relationship is "they protect each other" when one falls down the other picks her up and vice versa honestly amazing how healthy their relationship is

I thought it was important to bring up just because how HUGE yang reassuring Blake is

(this isn’t to downplay what Blake is to yang i just can’t talk about 2 things because then I’ll never stop talking)

It’s a big part of their relationship and dynamic and both of their characters and development especially in the beginning

It means a lot to who yang is as a person and who she is in context to Blake

Like I want to do nothing else but acknowledge just how important meeting and being with yang was for Blake

Blake just got out of a relationship that was incredibly manipulative and toxic

But the only reason she got OUT of it was because the person doing that to her was hurting OTHER people, it clearly took Blake a much longer time to realize what he did to HER was wrong

And then she teamed up with yang, a girl who’s so patient and supportive and kind to her and expects literally NOTHING in return

And it’s very important to me that I think that she started acting like that BEFORE she started to have a crush on Blake in any way

Yang did that because it’s what she could tell Blake needed, and that’s just the kind of person she is

Blake needed reassurance, she needed to believe she was more then just a dark void, that she deserved better then what she got and that’s what yang was for her

Nothing to do with romance or anything else, flat out just: Blake needed someone to do that and yang excelled in it

And there’s so many examples

Like:

Blakes drawing her abusive ex in a notebook yang sees but Blake clearly doesn’t want to talk about it? Yang lets it go, doesn’t ask any questions

Blake puts herself down when they talk about their motivations for being here? Yang says “you’re not the kind of person to run from a fight”!

Blake has a fight with Elon musk jr Weiss and reveals she was part of a group that while having a long history of being a group for fighting for faunas rights has recently started killing innocent people (under new leadership) and then she RUNS? Yang “abandonment issues” xiao long literally just looks for her, she isn’t mad her team partner left without a word, she doesn’t so much as mumble about the secrets or the white fang thing, she doesn’t comment on how it must make her feel to be abandoned like that, she even defends her to Weiss repeatedly

When they find her and Blake admits to something SO personal and big for her, to decide to go after and try and right the wrongs of the white fang and figure out what’s going on, yang supports her, casually and sweetly, like there should never be any doubt on what she was going to do, yangs just happy Blake’s expressing her wants

NOT EVEN MENTIONING BURNING THE CANDLE WHICH WAS A WHOLE THING ALL ABOUT THIS PART ABOUT THEM

Yang helped Blake immeasurably on her road to recovery

And I’m not saying that Ruby and Weiss and sun weren’t important too!!! They absolutely were!! Weiss and sun actually serve 2 different versions of the same thing Blake needed, and we all know why Ruby’s important relationship for Blake to have, I’m just saying all of them COMBINED couldn’t get Blake to stop destroying herself after several attempts and it took yang 1 conversation max AND got her to additionally go to the dance with a single sentence

Yang probably did the best job 1 person can do to help out someone going through something this huge and difficult

However Blake was going through a LOT mental illness is a big thing especially with all the trauma and just how fucking long she was in that situation for

A lot of things were conditioned into her and they worked really hard but new trauma tends to bring up old bad habits

As amazing of a job yang did at being there for someone who’s so traumatized

she was still just one person and Blake needed the bigger support system of her family to get to the healthy place she needed to be at to truly be the healthy person she is now

and to truly be the healthy person she’d need to be to be a healthy significant other for yang

but I doubt she could’ve even gotten to the point of willingly going back home without yangs help

Something I should probably make a different post about tho is

The point of “we’re protecting each other” is that they’re NOW loving each other by working together

Before they wanted to protect each other but they were working separately, they weren’t communicating about it and to a certain extent they weren’t respecting each other about it

That’s the POINT of it

It’s shown in how they fight Adam

The first time it’s Yang protects Blake and then it’s Blake protects yang

The second time they’re doing it together at the same time

That’s why it works

Also btw yeah I totally get the frustration, the bumblebee relationship is so awesome and so nuanced and amazing and people aren’t always gonna remember to express they’re cannon complexities

Even down to the simplest “we’re protecting each other” or the entire point of the song “all that matters”

Such is the nature of fandom

Anyway the reason for the recent bias is probably cause a lot of the more obvious helping each other and comforting each other things have been yang to Blake

And people have recently realized there’s a LOT that yang needs to be talked to about

So they’re making up for it in fandom

As fandom works

And it makes people occasionally forget just how prominent yang helping Blake is or just forget to mention it

I think Bumbleby awesome for the both of them but specially for Yang because I see Yang as someone with a huge sense of duty , she actually puts it before her well-being and the only times she scapes it is when she pretends to not care (aka using her "party girl" persona) so having someone rebellious like Blake by her side would really improve her mental health .

For stuff like " You don't need to make a valedictorian speech if you don't want to " or "You're just as deserving of days off as any of us" , "It's ok to let people take care of you for a change". Maybe they would fight about the last one .

I think Blake also obviously has a huge sense of responsibility and duty, with what happens with the white fang and her parents and just how she is (however I think in the early seasons this manifests itself as guilt and failure and hurts her more then it helps)

I like to think that they have the ability to make each other relax a bit

Where yang feels she has to be responsible to a fault Blake steps in and chills her out

Like when she gets overly worried about Ruby especially in the early days

And we’ve actually SEEN yang do this for Blake as well so yeah

I think definitely for school stuff Blake would help yang be a little bit more relaxed

Very random aside on your observations about Ruby & Yang suppressing their emotions while Blake & Yang's don't.

But in Ice Queendom when they were all on the airship and both Ruby & Yang upset Weiss, Yang and to a lesser extent Ruby instantly went for trying to get Weiss to chill out and then trying to get both to calm down.

Sort of has similar vibes to what you discussed I feel.

Is water wet? Yeah they’re SO codependent they’re lives revolve around each other

They have been with each other for SOOOOO LONGGGGGG

even if you don’t really believe in yang raising Ruby because of their father being a victim of “depressed because my wife died and I also have to raise two children alone and I’m overwhelmed” which happens, it sucks but it happens

They’re still VERY close and yang is the older sister and that’s what HAPPENSSSS

That’s what I love about ice queendom (im pretty sure I haven’t totally finished it yet so no spoilers) they acknowledge that relationship they have really well (in the beginning with yangs convo with their dad, and also just in how yang acts about Ruby’s plans and actions)

Personal I believe as reliant as Ruby probably became on yang

Yang also relied on ruby

Just after their mom died and their dad shut down

Taking care of Ruby was something to do

Keep her busy and not thinking about what was going on

And she’s someone who literally couldn’t leave her

As hard and awful as it is to be only two years older and step up emotionally or physically or whatever you perceive the situation to have been, she still is probably grateful that she still at least has Ruby, even if as a job to do

And I think they never really escaped that relationship fully

Yang left to go to beacon and Ruby ended up just following her there

But then yang lost her

And Ruby left

And they had to confront finally each other’s absence

And I will say I think they didn’t do it very well
