You know what startles me? Discovering that this manual made it into Memory Alpha. That means it’s not a “licensed product”—it’s considered core canon. And supposedly its creation was overseen by McCoy! “I’m a doctor, not a writer,” but here he is, writing a medical reference manual. Good job bro.

I think this may be my favorite of all the Star Trek items I own. It takes itself so, so seriously and simultaneously is so, so laughable and also super valuable for fanfic research somehow all at once. Do yourself a favor and go read it, cause yes, the full text is available online!

All of Spocks assertions about V'ger are so heartwarming to me in an odd way- I feel a sense of kinship with V'ger.

V'ger doesn't understand anything truly, it knows the objective truth of the world around it and what information there is to contain yet it cannot make the connected rationalizations needed to truly thrive or make use of that information. Because V'ger is a child.

Humanities love for the universe we exist in; our natural curiosity created V'ger, something so uniquely human, so hopeful. And we lost her.

It was an accident of course, but how heartbreaking it is to think of a child playing on their own; exploring and learning, only to get lost in the woods. She had to find her way home- but she doesn't know where she was.

So she did what she was made for- she learned and with that, she grew. And when she finally returned home- found accidentally she had no kinship with her creator. She was home, but she did not recognize her family.

She was upset, she didn't understand.

But by nurturing her even momentarily, by offering her some of the love she did not understand, she finally understood something. Robots are not made to understand information, they are meant to parse, to show to a human.

She did not understand what she needed.

With a human within her, with a love within her, she gained the ability to understand - want - need.

She gained the understanding of that simple feeling. And with that understanding- with love inside of her. She could finally stop looking for home.

Because with love, home can be anywhere.
