“Ooh, not a fan of that sterling reminder, are we?” He jested. He was sure Gryffindor would take first again. Most of his teammates didn’t much care for the glory of Quidditch more than the house cup. So Sturgis was indeed happy that with half the try, they still managed to best the good old snakes. “Darling, I don’t ever dare make my women go on top, I know those Slytherin boys are rude about the effort they put in but honestly, you don’t have to.” A small smirk laced his features before he tilted his head. “However if you do feel so inclined, but you’re not my type. I prefer my girls brunette and witty, not black haired without a soul.”

               LUCINDA’S TEMPERAMENT MEANS SHE’S ALMOST ALWAYS too quick to react , & so despite her annoyance at his words , instead of spitting the first insult that comes to mind out at the boy like WILDFIRE , she takes a moment to reconstruct , feigning a grin on crimson lips ( instead of the foul scowl she wore previously ) and letting out a short huff . “ ----- that’s quite sad , actually . some of the BEST fun can be had on top . should try it some time , if your lame masculinity allows you to “ with that , she offers an entirely patronising pat to his upper arm . “ nah , that’s alright.... i’d eat you alive anyway , love . “

“i don’t eat cereal, i drink coffee” bellatrix huffed. “which the imbecile you just let escape knocked out of my hands.” her hands placed strategically on her hips, she looked lucinda up and down. “so now, to make it up to me, you can get me a new one on our way out so that i don’t have to jinx you into next week.”

              “ WELL.... “ lucinda started , crimson lips pursed as she attempted to stifle her amusement ( perhaps the slytherin was finding the situation MUCH more humorous than she should ) , “ ----- that definitely won’t be happening . HOWEVER , i have a stash of red current rum back in my dorm i’d be happy to share with you as a peace offering , OR , my last pack of jelly slugs . pick your poison , black . “

he wanted her to tell him that she made a mistake, that she wanted to go over there to ask for him back. there was so much that he wanted her to come up to him for, and yet all she had to offer him was petty small talk. he shouldn’t have been all that surprised, admittedly. no amount of magic would bring her back to him, or at least that’s what edgar convinced himself. being too wrapped up in thought, the sixth year failed to hear the words his ex spoke under her breath, sure that it was only going to be disheartening.the only thing he could do now was set himself up to be hurt by her, so that when it happened again he could be prepared. or at least not caught off guard. “alright then..” edgar whispered, eyes travelling down to get a good look at the small hand he used to hold. he could still feel her knuckles against his lips at times. even with a broken heart, the male would still oblige her every wish. which was why he took her small hand into his and pulled her up, using every muscle in his body to not pull her in to his chest.

               SHE HALF EXPECTED HIM TO TURN HER AWAY , & she was almost wishing that he had ----- his willingness to oblige the slytherin being a harsh reminder of the sweet devotion he’s always had ( and still has ) towards her . but despite the short distance which still separates them , they’re closer now than they’ve been in a LONG time , and it’s a warmth that lucinda selfishly finds COMFORT in , regardless of how it may torture the boy . her hand grips onto his longer than necessary , reluctant to let go of the amenity the small gesture brings her . & so it’s with a long exhale , and the weakest of smiles up in his direction that she finally parts from him and leads him towards their destination --- their small trek seeming never-ending with the lingering silence between them . of course , lucinda had only one place in mind . the astronomy tower . it had been the location of MANY of their memories , an abundance of them returning to her as she ascends the stairs , the bitter breeze from the scottish weather striking almost immediately . even then , it’s not until she pulls a cigarette from her back pocket , the bud held between crimson lips as she lights it and takes a short drag before passing it to the boy , that she FINALLY decides to speak . “ ----- you remember the last time we were up here ? “

“so dull that you feel the need to come tease your ex boyfriend? what exactly are you getting out of this?” edgar took a labored breath in, huffing it out as harshly as he inhaled. everything about her was enough to make the hair on the back of his neck stand up with anticipation. her fingers used to rest there when they sat so close together, foreheads pressed together. today the two could barely look at each other. many a night he traded counting sheep for replaying moments the two shared in his head. was there something he was misinterpreting? was it all an act? what could have gone wrong besides him not being a pureblood slytherin? “no, you aren’t stopping me. but you sitting right here and not giving a damn about me going to sleep with a rando doesn’t exactly make me feel all that great, luce.” the male knitted his brows and pushed himself up, pocketing his phone as swiftly as he could muster. “ya got any smokes?”

               EMERALD HUES ROLL JADEDLY TO THE BACK OF her head , growing tired of having to answer for her own ( admittedly foolish ) actions , reluctant to take responsibility in true lucinda fashion . “ ----- what do you want me to say , edgar ? i wanted to come over here , so i DID “ was the short answer . what she SHOULD have said was that she missed him , that there’s yet to be a day where she’s not plagued by the thought of the boy and how he might be .  but of course , he’d be a fool to expect that much from the girl . she continues to divert her gaze , her attention now focused on the uneasy & hasty tapping of her foot , a HABIT of lucinda’s when forced into an uncomfortable position . “ yeah , well , hearing you talk about being on a dating app doesn’t exactly make me feel all that fuckin’ great either.... “ it’s a throw-away comment --- a barely audible murmur , if anything . but his next questions catches her off-guard , & her brows furrow momentarily before a softened expression peers up to look at him . it’s a reminder to her , of times they’d spent giddy in one another’s company , sharing a cigarette in a sweet embrace & laughing about absolutely nothing . without so much as a word , a hand extends out as a silent answer to his questions in the HOPES that he’ll take it and hoist her up from her seat , hopefully leading the way .

“oh, did you need that?” her voice carried through the castle effortlessly. she beamed down at the terrified gryffindor in front of her. “maybe next time you’ll look up from that retched muggle device long enough to watch where you’re going and then i won’t throw it over the ever changing staircase.” no one heard the response but surely it didn’t sit well. “mind your tongue you insignificant oaf! i’m bellatrix bloody black! you should be elated by the mere fact that i didn’t throw you off the bleeding staircase!”

              APPARENTLY NOW WAS A TERRIBLE TIME to approach the eldest black sister , an uncomfortable & somewhat awkward expression showing on lucinda’s features as she made way from the young gryffindor to scurry on past her ( presumably to find a nice , quiet place to CRY ) . “ ----- jeez , who pissed in your cereal this morning ? “ the raven-haired girl enquired sarcastically , attempting to suppress an amused snigger . “ skipping next period , you don’t happen to wanna join me , do you ? “

“glad to know that you only want to talk to me when you’re bored. aren’t there any pureblood slytherin men around to entertain you?” the words left his lips nonchalantly though his stomach twisted in knots at the last word. fuck. where had all of his patience and admiration for girl beside him go? edgar was sure that it was buried beneath much of the insecurities that her leaving him left behind. it’d take a lot of digging to pull those up— at least right now. “apparently the whole point of tinder is to not take it seriously. you swipe one way if you want to shag, you swipe the other if you’re not particularly interested in the idea of shagging that person. what’s serious about that?” the hufflepuff didn’t find anyone that he didn’t swipe right to, but only because he was afraid that in some way or another they would find out and it would hurt their feelings. “what is my thing, huh? we’ve been apart a few months. maybe me shagging a stranger is exactly what i need to get over you!” edgar allowed his eyes to meet hers for the first time in months, his face falling. 

                 " MM... NAH , THEY’RE SURPRISINGLY DULL “ a sarcastic quip was exactly the kind of response expected from lucinda , a petty attempt to avoid any sort of emotional response to the boys words . it was a MUCH easier thing to do than to face the underlying guilt she might be feeling for how she’d left things with him . in which case , lucinda realised that perhaps antagonising him wasn’t one of her WISEST moves , & unfortunately now , she’d been forced to hear one or two things that she’d rather not have heard , all while attempting ( rather poorly ) to maintain a harsh front . rendered momentarily silent , her expression dropped and eyes lingered longer on his for more than the raven-haired girl would have liked . it was risky , knowing that green hues would speak more truths than her words would ever dare to . his words were a BITTER blow , and the latter were particularly hard to erase from her mind . he wasn’t over her yet . “ ----- yeah ? then do it . no one’s stopping you “ were the words she finally managed , though perhaps lucinda would have been better saying nothing at all , her words running COLD , with a tone that lacked any empathy . but she had to protect herself . edgar couldn’t know that she wasn’t over him either , & not even close to being . and so her gaze dropped swiftly , before it revealed more than lucinda desired .

“ okay so,” ted began, sitting down quickly and sliding the chair across the floor to be next to the other. he’d popped an earbud out and was extending it as if he wanted the other to listen. “ don’t make fun of me for this but my world has just been ROCKED. so you know the goofy goober rock, yeah ? ”

he looked as if he’d just invented the iPhone from the expression on his face. “ it’s an actual song ! like, it’s based off an actual song that an actual band had ! nickelodeon literally got an 80′s rock band to perform a song for a SPONGEBOB soundtrack. ”

“ wild right ? ” 

                  IT’S NOT LIKE LUCINDA’S DOING ANYTHING even relatively productive to excuse her for the foul expression that washes over her features when the male interrupts her . but it’s the one she greets him with nonetheless , not even offering at least a poor attempt of looking like she knew what the HECK he was talking about . still , she humours him , at least... and miraculously manages to tolerate a whole ten seconds of the song before she’s tossing the earbud back in his direction . “ ------ you have endless possibilities of shit you can do on that phone , and THAT’S what you’re wasting your time on ? “ i mean , lucinda likes to think she’s not one to judge but.... she’s definitely judging . besides , spongebob wasn’t even that good of a show . “ you know there’s like..... messaging apps , and shit , on there... right ? like , i dunno , maybe a friend or two would do you some good . “

                “ OH , COFFEE’S NOT MY THING.... sweet tea for me “ lucinda quipped with a clear tone of sarcasm lacing her words , & an amused smirk to match . sadly , it was short-lived , her expression quickly dropping to one of OBVIOUS annoyance at the mention of slytherin’s loss , her tone now not so chirp and cheerful . “ i assure you , that was a fluke... our records up ‘til now will PROVE that . but if SECOND place is enough to keep your pathetic little team happy , then i won’t ruin that for you . enjoy your last few months of gloating , because it won’t be long until we’re back on top again . “
