This should be a movie. I don't know what it would be about and I don't think I would care. It just should be.

Its hard to believe that the first meeting of the Cowandilla Wine Appreciation Society was almost three months ago. We can say with pleasure however that it was a success!
We are very excited to share our score cards for the wines we tasted on the night, and a few comments surrounding the most talked about.
Four Sisters Sauvignon Blanc (around $12 / bottle) was the clear winner for the evening with the highest overall score. This is a solid Sauv Blanc, has a good taste and for under $15 you can’t go wrong.
First Block Moscato at a cheap and cheerful $9 / bottle, scored highly with most ladies in the group, but the guys weren’t completely sold. One who was far less than impressed was Lily who gave it a solid zero. She did note however that she ‘wouldn’t value ANY Moscato more than a zero’. We have taken this as a challenge to find one that will turn that frown upside down. First Block is a perfect pick for a hot summer afternoon or with a dash of gin for a cheeky cocktail.
Finally we come to the most talked about of the evening, the Mount Langi Ghiran 2007 Langi Shiraz. There was definite controversy surrounding the Langi Shiraz, although the fans of red in the group rated it well for taste, most rated it poorly for value. The current list price is around $90 / bottle and this did deter some of our members. A quick survey of the group revealed that most would happily part with $20-$30 / bottle for a decent red wine. HOWEVER, after further debate the group agreed that although expensive for some, when compared to wines with a similar price tag the Langi Shiraz is far superior. If this is within your price range, or if you are looking to splurge for a special occasion/gift then give this a go. It is sure to impress.
Goodnight and Good Drinking,

Recently two of our members Ben and Tahls enjoyed tasting the lovely offerings of Domaine Chandon in the Yarra Valley. This is what they had to say…
—-
As lovers of sparkling wine, both of us were looking forward to visiting Domaine Chandon. After enjoying a scenic drive along the Maroondah Highway we arrived at the entrance to the winery. We immediately knew that if the view and surrounds were any indicator we were not going to be disappointed. Although cold, the sun was shining just enough to tell us that we should have allocated more time to stay for lunch in the Greenpoint Brasserie. We will not make that mistake twice.
Upon entering the cellar door we noticed the bar first. Not for the reason you may be thinking, but because of its white top which was lit up by a light underneath. Most South Australian Wineries, not all but from our experience most, have darker tops which are usually wood. Although beautiful these do not allow the ability to see the true colour of the wine. While we understand the importance of this feature when professionally critiquing/judging wine, to most of us the textile your glass sits upon is not a factor that will dampen your cellar door experience. Having said that we now understand why it is a bonus. But we will elaborate more on this later.
There are two options for tasting at Chandon. Option 1 is to choose a small few that you would like to try at no cost. Option 2 is to pay a tasting fee of $5pp and complete a more structured tasting of approx. ten different wines, the $5 is then refunded by way of discount should you purchase a bottle on the day. Either way you choose to taste, you will not be disappointed by what is on offer. It is widely known that Chandon produces excellent sparkling, however the quality of the still wines on offer was most surprising. This is why we cannot suggest option 2 enough, it will allow you to be surprised by something you may not have otherwise selected.
Taking the opportunity to report back to our newly formed ‘Cowandilla Wine Appreciation Society’ seriously, we used our little pencils provided and took extensive notes as went. Unfortunately we then misplaced these somewhere between an hour later and our return to Adelaide. It is now difficult to remember every wine that passed our lips but what we will tell you what stood out the most.
Of course mostly we remember the sparklings, four of them in fact.
Chandon Cuvee Riche
When I (Tahls) first looked at the list this is what I was very much looking forward to tasting.Described as ‘Enticing aromas of guava, ripe tropical fruits, vanilla and dried apricots combine with complex notes of cashew nuts and brioche.’ how could you not be enticed by this? With a sweet and almost creamy taste this is bound to be a popular choice with many. Personally though I prefer my sparkling quite crisp and I just didn’t get that from the Cuvee Riche. I would recommend this however to many girlfriends who I know enjoy their wine sweeter, or who are not generally a fan of sparkling. Dan Murphys has this presently for $28/bottle.
Chandon Blanc De Noirs (we think)
A cellar door exclusive we are 98.9% sure that this was Bens favourite. We are going to need to keep hunting for that tasting sheet! Ben said this was by far the best sparkling he had consumed for some time. In his words ‘it was bold but not overpowering, definitely something you would have for a celebration. From memory if this is the wine that he remembers it was available at the cellar door for around $40/bottle.
Chandon Vintage Brut
There isn’t too much we can say about this one, other than it is very good. It is a three C bottle. Crisp, Cheerful & Classic. At around $30/bottle in Dan Murphys and $9 a glass in most reasonably priced restaurants and pubs, this should become your go to champers. If $30 is more than you would like to part with for a night in, at $22/bottle the standard Brut is also good, but V stands for Vintage and Very.
The Chandon Sparkling Pinot Shiraz was fantastic. For those who would usually shy away from a sparkling red, we urge you to give this a go. This is where we bring the white bar top back to conversation. The minute this glass was poured we raised our eyebrows at the pale colour of this wine. Neither of us expected the colour to be so light. The taste matched the colour, fruity and light, not what we anticipated but a very pleasant surprise. At $24/bottle online this is incredible value in our opinion.
Now I (Tahls) personally don’t think you can go to a winery and not review the Sauvignon Blanc. I am pleased to say that the Domaine Chandon Yarra Valley Sauvignon Blanc is a mouthful but a delicious one at that. Don’t be fooled by the plain jane label, this is a very nice bottle. HOWEVER, at around $22/bottle I would be lying if I said that I hadn’t had just as good if not better for less.
All in all a good day and $10 well spent. We look forward to a return visit and next time will definitely be sticking around for lunch!
— Ben and Tahls.
So there you have it folks, looks like Domaine Chandon is a winner!
Take care and until next time,
Goodnight and Good Drinking,
C.W.A.S
