The game
Lucas puts a hand on Max’s waist, fingers brushing against the skin just where her shirt rides up, and it sends a delicious feeling through her entire body. It’s not a new feeling exactly, but it’s one they haven’t gotten around to exploring all that much, and she relishes it for now. He grins as he pulls her close, and she wraps her arms around his neck, looking at him almost daringly. He tastes like mint when he kisses her, and she knows it’s because he chewed gum on the way over, precisely to prepare for that situation. She also knows he started doing it because she refused to kiss him after he’d eaten cheese once, and she could tease him about it, but for now it manages to melt even her cold cold heart and she doesn’t. and she fell asleep with the comforting weight of his arm around her waist. She woke up when he took it off and pressed a kiss against her temple, leaving to get back home (the next day) as Max walked in the gym for one of Lucas’s games as her eyes Landed on Lucas standing on the sidelines, chatting with one of the girls on the court. She is as pristinely perfect as her teammates. Full of energy, she bounces around, making the green pleats of skirt dance, making the glossy ringlets of her ponytail sway. The way she giggles is plainly flirty, but not exactly insincere. She emanates warmth. She’s a nice girl. A cruel personification of everything that Max isn’t. She’s cheerful, and not cynical, pretty, and not tomboyish. By teenage standards, she’s hot in the same way that Lucas is hot. They look good together, with their bright expressions, and their matching uniforms, the electric streaks of green and orange. As she walks to the outside door she barley even touched the bar “Max! Hey, Max! Wait up!” he shouts. “Max, where are you going?” “I..I um..I-“ “Max..” Lucas said calmly “Come here..” he said as he opened his arms for her to bury her face in his chest but all she can do to is stand on her tiptoes and wrap her arms around his neck, fumbling to align their mouth in a deep, sound kiss. Lucas makes a muffled noise against her lips, but he recovers quickly, with wholehearted enthusiasm. One of his hands delves into her crimson waves, while the other is firm around her waist, grounding her to the moment. This is real , she tells herself, cupping his cheek harder. This is mine .

SUMMERY:
There is an epic Harrington House Party with Cheerleaders and Basketball players and somehow Steve’s beloved children
(Max had been staying at Steve’s house for about a year now since her mom couldn’t handle her so she put her up for adoption and Steve took her in)
——————————————————————————————As i walked in to Steve and Max’s house I was surprised to see more people then I expected as I was walking to where the party was but then a faint voice called my name by Max’s room “Lucas?” as I walked over to her room I saw Max sitting on her bed “Max? Hey are you ok?” I asked her worried “Yeah..I’m fine..it’s just that I haven’t really had company since the incident..So it’s been pretty boring here so I need some company..” Max responded to me “Ok.” I said quietly but loud enough for her to hear as I sat down and leaned forwards with my elbows on my knees on the edge of her bed as she turned to face me sitting on her one leg and the other one hanging off her bed as her head was tilted to one side to look in his eyes. “What’re you thinking about over there,” she said and took her headphones off her head and laid them around her neck. I shook my head a little bit and mumbled a noncommittal answer to her question. “Look at me?” I looked up at her after a minute and I could tell she could see the stress shining in my eyes. She traced her thumb underneath my left eye as I looked away to avoid having to answer any of her questions i could already tell she’s gonna ask. she sat next to me and leaned her face against my shoulder and back. “Are you alright?” she asked me softly and I could hear her click off her walkman. “You really shouldn’t turn that-” “Hey, answer my question,” she said back at me and I got up from where we were sitting and faced her. “No, I’m not alright. “No, I’m not alright. That was the scariest moment of my life, and even if that was me it still wouldn’t have been as terrifying as seeing you up there,” i said to her throwing my arms around the room in emphasis. She looked at me for a second and just thought before jumping up from where she was sitting and into my arms. She just held tightly for a second before softening and starting to cry against my sweatshirt as I looked down at her and laid my head on hers. “I could never be okay after seeing the person that I love the most in my life inches away from– from being that unsafe.”She looked up at me with tears in her eyes and put her hand on my cheek. She smiled through her tears and told me what she’s been holding in for months on end. “I love you too, Lucas.” She responded as she leaned in to kiss me

Chapter 2
As Lucas came back up and plopped down next to her “Max,” Lucas said his tone calm, like he was soothing a crazed animal. And she felt like an animal, feeling the need to scratch herself free of her skin, to shed the parasite that had made its way into her brain. She wanted to curse and scream and cry until it left her alone. No one was safe before that. Lucas wasn’t safe before that. He came over to her, trying to set his hands on her arms. Max pushed them away. “No, don’t, I’m not safe, I’m not— I’m just gonna hurt you and—” “Max, I think you’re having a panic attack, okay. Just let me help you.” “No, stay away, I’m not—” “Let me help you, Max…Please.” “Fine..” max said still crying as she leaned onto Lucas as he wrapped his arms around her "Thank you for checking up on me…And for helping me out” she explained. Lucas felt his heart squeeze in his chest. He wanted to tell her that of course he’d helped her, that he was just happy and privileged that she’d let him. But his uncertainty was still present, and he needed to know if he'd done the right thing. “So you’re… you’re not mad at me? For over-stepping earlier? Because I really didn’t mean to, but if I did, I’m really sorry,” he rushed to explain. But Max just shook her head lightly. “I’m not mad at you, Lucas.” “I’m just…” She paused, looking out the window, biting her lips together in thought. Something resembling regret flashed in them. “I’m sorry you had to see all that. I’m sorry I yelled at you. None of it was your fault.” After a while Max shifted a little next to him But after a moment she was inching her hand over to cover his on top of the blanket. She squeezed his hand, just lightly. Max looked beautiful in the candlelight. The slight flicker of the small flames played against her freckled face, illuminating it in the dark. Lucas suddenly noticed that her hair was down, the first he’d seen it like that since they’d met up again. And now that he’d noticed it, he couldn’t tear his gaze away, seeing her hair tumbling from over her shoulder, strands draping down by the sides of her face. It was just glowing in the warm light. The air in her room felt different all of a sudden, no longer drafty, something other than dusty particles hanging heavy in it. Max was still looking at him, not moving away, not averting her gaze. And seeing the way she was looking at him, curious and open and warm, it made it feel like there was a string connecting him to her. A string he couldn’t help but to follow. Before he knew it, he had started to lean forward a little. And Max was leaning in too, dropping her knees down from between them gripping onto his jacket. Lucas’s brain was short-circuiting, not able to fully catch up to what was happening, the only thing on his mind was how close she suddenly was. How she was made of candlelight and bright laughter and soft copper and fierce blue and she was so close that he could smell the sweet apple juice on her breath. His eyes fluttered closed. As they both began to kiss each other “Wait..” Max abruptly breathed out, tense.
“What is it?” Lucas asked, worried, his eyes springing open as they both quickly leaned away. He was mentally hitting himself for getting swept up like that. What had he been thinking? Here he was, assuming things again!
“We don’t have to—” he quickly added.
“No, I-I want to, it’s just…” Max cut him off, and he didn’t even have time to process how hearing that made his heart nearly burst when she continued, her voice growing tense and worried: “What if I’ll snap and hurt you?” “Well, how are you feeling? Is it messing with you, are you feeling anything coming on?” Lucas asked her, trying his all to be level-headed, just needing to reassure her.
“No, I…” Max said, shaking her head, pressing her eyes closed. Then she opened them again and looked right at him when she said:
“I just wanna feel you…Like..kiss you and hug you….Oh god did I just say that?” Max said as she tucked her face in her hands “Yea..you did..” Lucas responded “Shit..I-I’m sorry..” max said muffled “Hey, Hey it’s ok…I- I feel the same way max..” “Okay, um, well then, I can um…” he stammered. He was grasping around at the remnants of his brain, the parts of it that hadn’t floated into the air already, so wonderfully overwhelmed by all this.
“Just stay still, okay? We’ll go slow, let me know the second you want to stop,” he explained. Max nodded, her gaze having fallen back to his lips again as he’d spoken. And there went another slice of his brain, happily floating up like a piece of a cloud. He touched his lips to hers, careful and feather light. The last time her lips had tasted salty, like the sea. This time they were sweet, with the freshness of the apple juice lingering. But her lips were as soft as he remembered, as warm. And he felt like he had died and gone to heaven, all in the split second before he leaned away.
“How are you feeling?” he quickly asked her, immediately pulling back, worried, scanning her face for a sign of something being wrong.
“I—” Max started, blinking her eyes, her brow knitting as she seemed to try to focus on everything she was feeling.
“I’m okay, I think. I feel in control, it’s quiet in my mind…but I- I kinda like it..” she said, starting out hesitant, but sounding surer with every word. “No but I—” Max started to argue but he shook his head, stopping her. “Max.” Her eyes flickered to meet his, swirling with uncertainty, doubt and fear. He found her hand again, gently squeezing it. And his words were as reckless as he knew them to be true when he said them. “You could never hurt me.” “Lucas,” she breathed out and if that would've been the last time he would ever hear his name said out loud, it would've been fine. Because he was pretty sure nothing could compare to how if felt, hearing her say it right now, how her lips formed the simple two syllables into something heavy and soaring and golden and real and simple and intricate all at the same time. Her eyes were on his, and so, so blue, even in the hazy dark, and flowing over with so much emotion that he wanted nothing more than to just drown in the ocean within them.
And then they fell together, her hands holding his face as her lips pressed against his, and Lucas could’ve cried at how wonderful it felt, how he’d longed to be able to feel her so close to him, safe and present and wanting him there with her. He kissed her back, their lips slanting together as the kiss deepened with their shared need to be assured that this was real, that they were together, that they were okay. He leaned against her touch as she cradled his face in her hands, and his own hands moved to her waist, pulling her closer. And all else in the world, all the uncertainty, fear and misery in it no longer mattered for him, for just as long as he could stay here, being held by her, feeling her soft, eager lips on his. As he want downstairs still shocked that they both basically maked out “Woah what happened to you?” Mike exclaimed We kind of kissed so I—" “Wait, who kissed?"
Lucas had screwed his eyes shut, cursing inwardly as Will had walked into the kitchen. That was it then for that private discreet conversation. "Did you kiss Max?" Will had asked, his brows high in surprise. But before Lucas had had time to form any kind of an answer, Dustin had spoken up, waving his hands around. “Wait, wait, wait, hold up!"
Since it had been raining pretty much non-stop since the storm, it took nearly a week until the fence was fully fixed. Once it was finally finished, the group decided to celebrate with a movie night, Max’s first one at the house. Back to the Future was picked as the first movie of the night, just like they’d discussed back in the attic, and after dinner was done, they all gathered around to watch it. That night the rain had eased a little, but it still pattered lightly against the roof of the porch outside, dripping down the gutter in a sheer curtain against the dark woods. There was a fire quietly burning in the fireplace and with the staticky glow of the TV and the comfortable couches grouped around it, it was all warm and cozy in the living room as the familiar movie played on. They had reached the prom night sequence at the end of it, when Lucas could no longer ignore the debate rising up around him about the technicalities of the movie’s conflict.
“No but if she really had boinked her son, then the son wouldn’t be there to be boinked in the first place!” Robin argued with Steve.
“Well yeah, but I’m just asking that if she had, then what would’ve happened?” Steve explained, gesturing towards the tv with his handful of popcorn, laying back on the couch, his legs kicked up on the armrest.
“Well nothing, because then the movie couldn’t have even happened,” Dustin pointed out from the floor, leaning back against the couch.
“On the account of – you know – the main character not existing,” he deadpanned, looking up at Steve. Steve just shrugged, mumbling in a “just asking” , and Dustin turned back with an eyeroll.
“Wait, so how does the picture fading thing factor into all of this then?” Steve persisted after a minute and there were groans from everyone around.
“Guys, it’s a movie. They probably didn’t think that much about it,” Max pointed out with a sigh. She was sitting on the couch next to Lucas, having pulled her legs up comfortably onto her seat. He still hadn’t found a chance to talk to her, but he didn’t mind for now, just enjoying getting to sit with her and watch a movie they both liked. He once again found himself wondering, imagining what it would’ve been like for Max to be involved in those happy memories. Back to the Future came out in early July, just a couple weeks before his family’s trip to California. He wondered where Max had seen it for the first time, if she had a local theater she went to all the time, if she also had a group of friends that schemed their way into R-rated movies. She’d told him about her friends that she’d hung out with at the skate park, maybe they’d joined her to go see Back to the Future on opening weekend just like him and his friends had. It felt strange to imagine, the two of them sitting in movie theaters at the same time, just at the opposite sides of the country, not knowing the other even existed yet, but still already getting to share something great before even meeting.
“Right, Lucas?” “Huh?” Lucas sounded, confused, blinking his eyes awake from totally spacing out. Max was looking up at him, her hand on his arm, trying to get his attention. And she was successfully getting it, how could she not when she was sitting that close to him, practically leaning against his side, her eyes right on him, bright and attentive. Too bad he didn’t have a clue what she was asking him about. “Good thing we’re not having this argument about the Mad Max movies. You’d lose,” she said in a half-whisper, her voice low but light in mischief. He turned to look at her, feeling his eyes straining a bit to look at her face so close to his, but he didn’t focus on it for too long, too busy being spellbound by her, the smug smile on her lips, her eyes narrowing just slightly in challenge, the blue of them bright. There was a strand of hair laying on her face, the end of it curling to lightly touch her freckled cheek just below the light scar on her cheekbone. She was so beautiful.
Lucas gulped. He needed to talk to her. And soon. Everything he wanted to say to her, to ask her, was bubbling up within him, dangerously close to spilling out every time he looked at her. The words were building up in his chest, making it ache not to let them out for her to hear. “Hey,” Lucas said, his voice hushed, careful, as he pushed past his nerves and reached out to lightly set his hand on Max's shoulder to get her attention. Max turned to look at him.
“What’s up?” she asked, her tone light, relaxed, glancing over at El who’d just walked into the bedroom.
“I was wondering if you maybe wanted to talk for a bit?” Lucas asked, trying his best to sound casual about this and not let his nerves show.
His hand reached up to scratch at the back of his neck.
“With, um, me,” he added, hoping Max caught onto what he meant, that he wanted to talk to her alone. It seemed like she did, her eyes seeming to widen in understanding.
“Oh, um, sure, I’ll just…” she muttered, instantly avoiding his gaze, looking over at El who was lingering by the doorway, turned to rummage through a chest of drawers, but her ears were perked, Lucas was sure of it.
“Hey El,” Max called out to her.
“Yes?” El replied instantly, turning to look back. Yeah, she’d been listening for sure.
“I’m gonna go downstairs and make myself some tea. Do you want me to make you some?” Max asked, coming up with an excuse scarily fluently.
“No, I’m fine. But thanks, though,” El said with a polite smile, but Lucas knew her well enough to notice the knowing quirk of her lips.
“Okay, well, um, I’ll be right back,” Max told her, turning to head back towards the stairs.
“Sure you will,” El replied, turning to walk away, her voice sing-songy and smug and all too knowing. Lucas felt his face heat up. Oh she knew. For sure.
“Come on, let’s go,” Max said, brushing past him, her hand lightly touching his arm as she did, before quietly making her way down the stairs. Lucas followed after her as she walked into the empty kitchen, picking up the kettle and going to fill it. It once again felt like there was a string connecting him to her, pulling him along through the quiet house. And he was going along happily.
“Alright, what did you wanna talk about?” Max asked, walking over to the stove and lifting the kettle up onto it. She flicked on the gas, and the small flames worked to lit up the mostly dark kitchen a little.
“You have until this boils, or El’s going to get suspicious,” she remarked, fiddling with the gas dial a little before she was happy with it.
“I don’t know what she could be suspicious about. It’s just a friendly little chat,” Lucas pointed out in order to lighten the mood, settling to stand by the kitchen table.
“Right, right, of course,” Max nodded, folding her arms across her chest, going to lean back against a counter across from him. The warm flicker of the stove lit up her face, her light smirk, the set of her brows, the joking glint in her blue eyes. The expression he'd learned to know well over the time they'd known each other.
“I just, umm,” Lucas started after a moment, trying to figure out how to form his words. They'd been swirling around his brain non-stop for the past two weeks, but now that he finally had the chance to let them out, he was having trouble forming them into something coherent.
“These past couple of weeks have been so busy, so I just…”
He shrugged.
“I wanted to check in on you. To ask how you were doing,” he said , looking at Max.
“Oh, well um,” she voiced, stopping to think too, looking out the dark window to form her answer. Lucas bit his lip in hesitation. It had probably been a stupid question from him, things were still plenty complicated, asking her to say how she was doing in a simple word or two was a lot to ask.
“I’m fine, I think," Max eventually replied, turning to look at him.
"Me and El are making progress, I’m getting used to the whole” — she brought her hands up, wiggling her fingers around her head — “mindreading thing.”
It was a little silly, but it made Lucas break into a soft smile. He couldn't help it.
“It must be weird,” he pointed out.
“It is," Max nodded. But then she shrugged.
"But it’s not too bad. If you ever get the chance, I’d recommend you give it a go," she said, her tone light, like she was recommending him a book he should check out.
“Okay, I’ll keep that in mind,” Lucas replied, his tone matching hers in lightness.
They were quiet for a moment, the thrum of rain against the roof of the porch melding with the soft flicker of the flames of the stove making the quiet calm, not tense at all.
“No, but it’s really been nice," Max spoke up after a bit, her tone more sincere now.
"Being in the house with everyone, getting to know everyone,” she added, looking around them in the kitchen. She turned to look down at her hands, twisting them together.
“I know that it would make sense for them all to hate me, so considering that, everybody’s been super nice.”
“I know I haven’t won them all over yet, but I’m getting there, I think."
“You’re starting to get closer with Mike, I saw him agreeing with you earlier,” Lucas pointed out, trying to remind her of her progress.
“Oh my god, right?" Max replied right away, her eyes big in surprise as she looked up at him. “I was shocked he did. It looks like I’m starting to tire him out," she pointed out and Lucas breathed out a light laugh. She really was, and he was glad that after their talk, Mike was making an effort to not be so standoffish with her. He really appreciated it.
After another silent moment, Max shifted in her spot, rubbing at her arms, a soft smile lighting up her face as she stared into the flames.
“It was nice. Finally getting that movie night,” she said, her voice quiet but sincere. Lucas felt a weight in his chest at the thought of her maybe doubting that she would get it.
“I wasn’t going to break my promise about it,” he pointed out. “I knew you wouldn’t,” Max said, and when he looked up from the stove and at her again, he noticed she was already looking at him, the quiet softness of her words also in her gaze. She’d held onto his promise, trusted him to be true to his word. And that was all he could ever ask for. Even though neither of them had moved, it suddenly felt like there was way too much space separating them. The floor of the small kitchen was now feeling like a huge swath of land that held them apart, and Lucas really wanted to cross it and go to her, to reel in the string connecting them. But it was Max who moved first, going over to check on the kettle, lightly feeling the side of it with the back of her hand. It didn’t seem to be too warm yet. “But, um… she voiced, crossing her arms again, her steps meandering as she walked along the row of kitchen counters, slowly getting closer to him.
“Was there anything else you wanted to talk about?” she asked. The question was conversational, but he noticed she was avoiding looking at him in the eye. Unlike him, Max was pretty good at hiding her thoughts. She was good a poker after all. But he’d spent enough time with her now to start to notice her small tells. And her avoiding eye contact was one of them. It told him that her question held more in it than appeared on the surface.
“Yes, I umm…” Lucas started, swallowing hard, trying to get the words out. The nerves spiking in him, the ones making his palms sweat and his tongue feel heavy, made him want to let it go. To chicken out and say that he had nothing to add. But then he looked at Max, saw her stopping to also stand by the table, setting her hand on the spoke-back of a chair, just a couple of feet from him. And he saw the vulnerable, hopeful look in her eye as she dared a glance over at him from under her lashes. “There was, actually,” he admitted, the words feeling like a held breath being let out. Her eyes snapped back to meet his, more concentrated now as she waited for him to speak. She was very still as she watched him, waiting with what seemed like bated breath for him to continue. It helped him to get the words out, though they were still meandering and awkward as they left his mouth.
“In the past two weeks, we haven’t really gotten the chance to talk about everything,” he said, rethreading what he’d said before.
“You know, with how you’re settling in, how you’re feeling with the mind-connection, all that. But also, um…” His mouth was dry with nerves, and he gulped, now the one to avoid eye contact as he finally got the words out.
“The kiss.”
“What about it?” Max asked, all nonchalant, but as Lucas dared a glance over at her, he could see the smallest twitch of the corner of her mouth, giving her nerves away. She was avoiding looking at him again, looking out across the dark kitchen.
“Well I just… I don’t know, wanted to know if you… if you thought it was—”
“A mistake or something?” Max cut in and for a fraction of a second Lucas felt his heart sink in his chest. But then he saw from the corner of his eye as Max turned to face him more, and then quickly continued:
“No, of course not.”
And now his heart was soaring, spreading a warmth all through him. He didn’t know what to say.
“I mean, I don’t think it was. But if you—” Max added, the words fast, her nerves truly showing now as she rushed to explain.
“No, I don’t think it was either,” Lucas quickly spoke up, turning towards her too. The last thing he wanted was her misjudging his silence for him not agreeing with her.
“Okay good,” Max said, visibly exhaling at his reply.
“Yeah,” he replied with a nod. She glanced up at him shortly before turning to look away again.
“Sorry, I’m making this all awkward, I just…” he spoke up again, the words spilling out of him now as he wanted to explain everything that had been filling his mind lately.
“I just needed to talk to you about it. Because these past couple of weeks, I—” he let out a nervous laugh, looking down, reaching to scratch the back of his neck. But there was also a smile inching its way onto his face.
“Well I don’t think I’ve stopped thinking about it.”
“Me neither,” Max said from next to him. The words came out quiet, nearly a whisper. But as he turned to look at her, she looked right back, no hesitation on her face, only a warm blush on her cheeks. And he couldn’t stop the dopey, lopsided smile from spreading to his face as he held her gaze, feeling like his heart was going to burst right out of his chest. And then she moved closer, her hand finding his on top of the kitchen table, covering it with a light squeeze.
They stood like that for a while, listening to the silence, taking in the words that had been shared between them, their hands connected.
“So where do we go from here?” Max asked after a minute, her voice still quiet but more relaxed now, genuine in the question. Lucas shrugged.
“I don’t know. I mean, we haven’t really done this before. Last time we kissed, you ran off and I flew halfway across the country, so we didn’t have to think about this part,” he explained, his lips lifting into a nostalgic smile.
“True,” Max acknowledged, a smile also on her face as she looked out across the room.
“Well I mean, the way I see it…” she started up again, her brows knitting in thought. Lucas turned to her, hearing what she had to say.
“Everything’s a mess anyways. With the world, with me. We don’t know what’s going to happen,” she explained, and he nodded along faintly. He was starting to get worried about where her train of thought was leading, but then he felt her squeezing his hand. Looking up at her again, he saw she was looking down at their clasped hands.
“But I really like this,” she said, giving him another light squeeze in emphasis.
“And I’d like to keep going with this, to see where it goes,” she ended with.
Lucas was at a loss for words once again, just watching her, counting the freckles on her face in the near-dark in an effort to try to make sure if this was real or not. But it turned out he didn’t have to be the one to speak up when Max did, her gaze flickering up to meet his again.
“I really like you,” she said.
There so often seemed to be a wall across her face, concealing her true feelings from the world, keeping them safe from hurt, from disappointment. But it wasn’t there now. There was just her and the pale blue of her eyes holding steadily onto his. A little terrified, but still sure. And Lucas wasn’t sure how he was still breathing.
“I really like you too.”
It felt a little small, too humble of a way to word all that he felt for her. But it felt right too, in the quiet of the cozy dark kitchen. The world around them was huge and vast and terrifying. Maybe something small was just what they needed.
Max didn’t say anything, just ducked her head down, biting her lips together to suppress a smile. A strand of hair fell across her face as she did, and he wanted to reach his hand over to fix it for her. And that wasn’t the only thing he wanted to do.
“I really want to kiss you again,” he admitted before he could think too much about it, and it wasn’t the smoothest thing ever, he was probably coming off way too awkward and nervous. But he couldn’t help it. And luckily Max didn’t seem to mind, letting out a light laugh, bumping her shoulder with his.
“Well that's good. Cause I really want to kiss you too," she said.
They turned together, their hands shifting on the tabletop, Max’s fingers lightly intertwining with his. And then she leaned up and he ducked his head down to meet her and placed his lips lightly on hers. When he pulled back a second later, he felt her hand coming up to cup his cheek, keeping him close. And then her fingers flexed against his on the table, squeezing them just a little tighter. And as she pulled, he came along, their lips meeting again and delving deeper, his free hand instinctively reaching out to gently hold her waist.
Her hand climbed up to the back of his neck, tugging him down and closer to her, and as she lightly brushed her fingers along the hairs at the back of his neck, Lucas felt goosebumps spreading along his skin.
His head was spinning, and he had half a mind to wonder if he should pull back for air, but then again if he would pass out feeling this amazing, he really wouldn’t mind. His hand was on the small of her back now, guiding her closer still, reeling in the last inches of the string connecting them. He was pretty much losing all coherent thought as her fingers ventured up into his hair, her lips continuing to glide along his.
And then the kettle whistled loudly.
“Oh, shit, right,” Max mumbled as she drew away, blinking her eyes, disoriented as she swirled her head back towards the stove.
“I’ve got it,” Lucas told her, lightly squeezing her side in reassurance before quickly going over to lift the kettle off the stove. He set it onto a potholder before turning off the gas. Things were going too well; he wasn’t going to be responsible for a fire.
“Thanks,” Max said, and he looked back to see her tucking hair behind her ears, her reddened cheeks visible even in the near dark. And it made his heart thump against his ribs, realizing it was in reaction to their kiss, that she’d liked it as much as he had. Max met his eye and they stared at each other for a moment, catching their breaths, both processing what had just happened. Her lips were slightly parted as she took in deep breaths and he just couldn’t stop looking at them, couldn’t stop recalling how soft and wonderful they’d felt as they’d moved together with his. God, he wanted to kiss her again and never stop.
“So, um, tea?” Lucas spoke up, his voice breaking awkwardly as he tried to focus, going to pick up the tin box of tea bags.
“Right, can’t forget about that,” Max said, her voice also a bit awkwardly high as she briskly made her way across the kitchen.
“Otherwise El will totally see right through me,” she added, taking the box he was holding out for her and popping open the lid. As she started to fish through the contents for a tea bag Lucas turned to lean back against the counter by the stove.
“Well you know, it’s okay if you tell her,” he said, his tone careful again. He didn’t want to assume things for Max, but if it were up to him, he wouldn’t mind telling everyone about them. Max didn’t say anything, her focus still on the box of tea

Chapter one
Max stood stiff, slipping her hand into Lucas’s behind their back, squeezing it. Max turned to look over at her and flinched, seeing she’d picked up a shotgun and was lifting its aim towards her. “Woah, Nance! Put that down!” Dustin exclaimed as Max bit the inside of her cheek as Lucas squeezed her hand. Max swallowed, then opened her mouth to speak “Okay,” Max said, lifting her hand up, his other hand going to rub over her wrist. She suddenly realized it was the first time in a year that she have felt this feeling. “Lucas..” max said quietly “Yea?” He responded as she walked back to her room “I’m talking about the obvious fact that the only reason you’re doing all this is because you’ve still got a crush on Max!” Everyone fell silent, instantly turning to Lucas. He felt his face heat up, feeling all of them staring at him. "No, that's not—" he had immediately begun to assert but Mike had steamrolled over him. “You're so clearly blinded by the fact that you’ve been basically in love with her for literal years and now you're letting that cloud your judgment!” “No, I—" Lucas had tried again but he hadn’t been able to get a word in. “Just admit it! It's so painfully obvious that that's what's going on!” Mike had exclaimed. He’d taken a step closer, his brow knitting in concern, voice lowering a little as he said: “This isn’t like you, man. You know better than this, you’re smarter than this.” Lucas had looked away from him, his jaw set. He didn’t know what he was talking about. “So you need to wake the hell up and admit that that’s what’s going on, so we can start taking this seriously!” Mike had added, his voice getting louder again, seeing Lucas not listening to him. “Okay, can we stop with this and—” Nancy had tried to cut in, sounding annoyed, wanting them to move on. Lucas had nodded forcefully, speaking up: “Yeah, can we please talk about something actually important?” Mike had scoffed out a laugh, taking a step back. “You’re not even denying it!” “Shut the hell up, Mike!” Lucas had snapped, finally looking back at him. “You have no idea what you’re talking about! Do you really think the only reason I’d help someone who needed help would be if I had something to gain from it?” “Well then say it,” Mike had said, crossing his arms over his chest. “Say what?” “That you don’t have any feelings for her or you want to gain from her. That you’re over her!” Mike had clarified and then Lucas had felt everyone’s gazes on him again. He had gulped, his mouth suddenly feeling dry. “I—” He was telling the truth. He really wasn’t in this in some gross attempt to get Max to like him or owe him something. Even the thought of it made him feel icky. He knew he needed to like her it was as simple as that. And yeah, what he was feeling for her was maybe a bit less simple but that was a totally different issue. One that had unfortunately been making his tongue feel tied, making it hard for him to form the words “I don’t love her” to tell Mike. Mike had quirked his brow, infuriatingly smug, but before he had the chance to say anything “And it’s about time you admitted it. If to nobody else, then at least to yourself. So you can stop being so defensive about it, get over yourself and tell her,” he said. “Tell her what?” Lucas asked.
“That you never fell out of love with her,” Mike replied, like it was just as simple as that.
Lucas scoffed, looking away. What was he talking about, that was ridiculous, he wasn’t—
“There we go. Hypocritical. Told you,” Mike said, lifting his hands, gesturing towards Lucas. “Whatever, man,” Lucas said, rolling his eyes. He didn’t want to argue about this anymore. Because Mike was his best friend and he was tired of arguing with him, tired of them silently circling each other and passing cold looks for these past few days. And also because there was some truth to what he was saying. But he wasn’t going to admit it.
Hopper had spoken up from the end of the table: “Okay, let’s focus up, kids, let’s quit it with the high school crush talk, we have much more important things to focus on right now.” El was now in Max’s room sitting on her chair by her as max quickly had a memory of something It was a memory of Lucas’s last night in San Diego, when her mom had been working late and she’d gotten tired of waiting for her in the lobby and decided to go down to the empty beach of the resort. She’d found Lucas there, him explaining he was looking for his watch he’d lost there earlier. She’d helped him find it and given it back to him. And then he’d thanked her and smiled at her, looking moonlit and all kinds of beautiful. And she’d given into the feeling that had grown within her during that past week, and let it lead her as she’d leaned towards him, quickly landing her lips to his. She’d only seen a quick flash of all that, just a glimpse of starry sky and ocean waves and warm brown eyes but it was enough to bring it all back. She’d spent way too many nights thinking back on that memory, learning it by heart as she’d laid in bed, hugging a pillow like some dumb teenage girl with a crush. Which, granted, she had been. She wouldn’t admit it to anyone, she had acted all nonchalant about it once the summer ended, but it had taken ages for her to get over him. And now there was this gnawing feeling in her chest, bugging her, annoying her, making her doubt if she really had fully gotten over him after all. And that was embarrassing as all hell. Max sighed, rubbing her fingertips over her closed eyelids. “You weren't supposed to see that…” “I know, sorry,” El replied, sounding genuine. But then she gave into her curiosity as she continued: “But it did look very romantic..” el said smirking at Max as she rolled her eyes. From what she’d learned about El over the past few days, she knew her to be a total sap. She loved romance movies and books, and always got this twinkle in her eye whenever she would talk about Mike. Or worse yet, when Max mistakenly off-handedly said something positive about Lucas. “Was that right before he left California?” El asked as a follow-up when Max refused to comment. “Yep,” she replied curtly. She had too much embarrassment in her system to go more into detail. But El didn’t seem to mind, nodding slowly at her words.

Chapter one: “The game”
Summary:
Ms. Kelly thought it would be good for Max to be busy by running a snack and drink stand at Lucas’s basketball games
(I’m sorry if my writing is shit I’m still new at this!)
(This takes place after the cemetery scene)
———————————————————————————————As Max opens the doors of the gymnasium the basketball team runs around her to get a drink as her eyes land on Lucas she told herself in her head “Max..get the fuck over him he is not your fucking boyfriend anymore and he probably hates you!” As she kept saying that in her head Lucas briefly meets her gaze, and he meets her eyes sky blue eyes. It’s one of the things he had always loved about her, and always will love about her. and she quickly looks down as she was now quickly walking in the hallway towards the stand as she felt a grip on her arm as she looked over her shoulder only to see Lucas “Max, are you ok?” Lucas asked her looking even more cuter than she had remembered as she looked at him as she began to speak “Yea I’m fine….I mean as fine as someone who is gonna have a gruesome death can be..” she said while looking down “Max..look at me..” he said as he lifted her chin up. Now she is looking at him as they both leaned to kiss, someone came running out and called Lucas’s name as he looked back to see who it was he ignored them he leaned in to kiss her “Lucas..” Max mumbled against his lips “Max..” Lucas mumbled against her lips as Lucas pinned Max against the painted Green, White and Orange brick wall he gripped onto her waist as she rested her hand on his chest and then Max griped onto the collar of his “Hawkins High basketball” jacket as she broke the kiss “I’m sorry..I’m so sorry….” She said shaky breathing “Hey hey, there is nothing to be sorry about..” Lucas responded as he cupped her face “How could you still want to kiss me? I-I pushed you away, Almost got killed by fucking billy and broke your heart..” Max said as she looked down “Max..I love you just the way you are I love that your grumpy, sarcastic, feirce, brave and I love that you would do anything for your friends..”

The Homework assignment part 2
includes talk of Su!c!d£ and Dr!nk!ng and @bu$£
I was standing in my bedroom when Lucas came over to me and hugged me "Hey do you wanna go to a party? the basketball team is throwing it" He asked me as I placed my hand on his chest "Hm let me think…will there be stupid assholes and jerks?" I asked him with a stern face "Max…please it'll be fun and I promise I will not get drunk" he said as I rolled my eyes "Only if you won't leave my side" I said to him "Deal!" Lucas said as he kissed my cheek and I went to get ready ⚫Few minutes later⚫ I came out in my favorite dark blue skinny jeans and I was wearing my shirt that said ‘Skater girl ’ and over it was Lucas’s pull over sweatshirt that had a skateboard on it which I stole from him and it smelled like him which is my favorite part as it felt like he was always near me “So that’s where my sweatshirt had been” Lucas said as he chuckled at me “Yea sorry you left it here and you know it’s my favorite! So let’s go!” I said as he grabbed my hand “To be honest Mayfield it looks better on you” he said as he kissed my head ⭕️After they arrive⭕️ Lucas held my hand as we walked in to a crowded, loud house and we walked over to some guys who I assumed was basketball guys “Hey Lucas…who's the girl?”One of the basketball guys asked him as he nodded to me and I looked at Lucas nervous as I squeezed his hand tighter “Guys this is my girlfriend Max Mayfield" Lucas said and they all looked me up and down like they were scanning me or something “Didn't your brother kill himself?” As there was a rumor that Billy had killed himself. One of them asked me and before I knew it I was outside sitting on the big fancy stairs as I heard the door open and close I heard someone say my name “Max.." Lucas said as he sat next to me as he saw me shivering and silently crying and he put his basketball jacket over my shoulders and wrapped his arm around me "Do you wanna go home?" Lucas asked me as I looked at him wiping a tear “No..it's fine….You wanted to come..” I said quietly as I leaned my head on his shoulder “Alright" he responded to me “You sure?” He asked me “Yea..Im sure..” I responded as he took my hand and we walked back inside and everyone was in the backyard in the pool and only a couple people was inside and I looked at Lucas and he pulled me to the backyard and I heard so many people yelling it reminded me of billy when he was screaming or shouting at me to stay away from Lucas and I turned to the door to go back inside as I felt a really really tight grip on my arm and I looked at a clearly drunk teenager who I didn't know "Get off of me you bastard!” I yelled at the guy "Oh come on sweetie I'm just playing" the guy said as I yelled for Lucas to help me "Lucas!!" I screamed scared as the guy tried to pull me away to do something to me and Lucas came over and yelled at the guy “Hey! Get off her!” Lucas yelled at the guy as he let go and I ran to Lucas crying silently as now he had known the guy reminded me of billy “It's ok Max.." he said to me as I was hugging him “It’s ok your safe with me..” he said softly

Chapter 1/10 “The lady”
Max and Lucas walked out the doors of the gym of Hawkins High. Max stopped walking which caused Lucas to stop walking and checking up on her “Hey you ok?” He asked her softly as she shook her head as she felt something cold and wet against her cheek “Hey, hey, it’s okay,” Lucas said gently and his warm hand came up to wipe away the tears. “I-I should’ve died! I did didn’t do anything!” She said “I thought you were gonna die. Imagine if you did..Imagine how I’d feel. Don’t you know how much that would destroy me??” Lucas responded as Her hand moved from his hand and rested on his chest, as she closed her eyes and opening again, staring in his dark gorgeous brown eyes “Lucas..” she said softly as Lucas pressed her against the brick wall of Hawkins High School gently but firm and he starts kissing her. “I love you MadMax” Lucas mumbles quietly against her lips before he pulls Max closer and starts kissing her over and over again As he does that Max couldn’t stop thinking “Oh , Lucas, Oh, wow…I like this…” He dragged a hand through Max’s hair, soft as ever, though it’s longer now. He wants to get closer and closer and closer, though they’re already pressed against each other as Max blushes violently and she can feel her heart is one step away from exploding. As Lucas gripped onto her waist and kissed her more and more as they broke the kiss Dustin came walking twords them “Hey assholes! Let’s go we are going to get pizza.” Dustin exclaimed as Max glanced at Lucas nervously “Yeah we’ll be there in a second” Lucas said as Dustin turned around walking back as Lucas grabbed Max’s hand and they ran the opposite direction of him and started running to her trailer as they opened her front door they both made sure all the curtains were closed and the doors were locked as they didn’t want anyone looking at them as both of them plopped down on Max’s bed Lucas sighed as he wrapped his arms around her waist to pull her closer to him as they started to kiss max heard the phone ring as she got up and answered it someone who she hadn’t told nor spoken about to anybody since she moved to Hawkins ~”Hello Maxine”~ the person on the other line said ~”I heard you and Mom moved without me..”~ the person said ~Maxine I think someone is at your door..”~ the person said as she heard a knock at the front door as Lucas got up and opened the door there stood a girl who looked almost identical to Max but was obviously older and her hair was more curly and longer than Max’s as the lady smiled at Max,Max looked terrified “Uhm hello?” Lucas asked “Hello there..You must be Lucas” the lady said as she walked in the door “Ah my dear sister” the lady said as she walked toward Max “What the hell are you doing here!?” Max said firmly but loudly “Oh Maxine mom didn’t tell you? Dad died.” The person said “Wha-What” max said while falling to the floor breaking down “Aw poor thing..You actually cared about our poor parents?” The lady asked as Max looked up clearly angry and upset “You just wanted their money..” Max said as she was shaky breathing “You catch on quickly” The lady responded “You were theone who convinced mom and dad to get a divorce?…” Max asked “Guilty as charged” the lady responded “how Could you?” Max asked her “Oh max don’t you know? Mom was hiding something from you about yourself” the lady responded “Mary…what was she hiding from me..” Max asked Mary “See I knew you were gonna ask me that and I just knew that I had to get something in return! So I thought if i told you..then you have to break up with your boyfriend and NEVER see him again!” Mary responded “No! Never!!” Max respond “Oh I thought you said that..that’s why I brought this..” Mary said as she pulled out what looked a shocker to stun people “No..” max said as she backed away from Mary and grabbed Lucas’s hand and they began sprinting away.

The homework assignment/Part 1
I had gotten my class schedule and walked in my first class to see Lucas sitting alone as I started to walk tword the back to take a seat the teacher said "Miss Mayfield you will be sitting next to Mr Sinclair for the rest of the semester." I sighed as i took a seat next to him our hands brushed against each other and I could feel my cheeks turn hot and in the corner of my eye I could see Lucas smirking at me and I was saying in my head "Max..he is not your boyfriend anymore GET OVER HIM!" I kept saying that over and over again but I just couldn't get over him, Lucas was the only one who was actually there for me, who actually listened to every word I said, who didn't look at my chest closely as he knew I didn't like it, he stopped when I told him too, he was the ONLY boy who was actually nice to me not that Dustin wasn't nice to me but Lucas was the only boyfriend i had ever had even when we were broken up I could never see Lucas as just a friend as I was sitting in class and I got a homework assignment which needed a partner and Lucas looked at me "Wanna be partners?" He had asked me as I looked at him "That's presumptuous of you" I said while smiling a little "So that's a yes?" He asked me "fine" I said "My house after school?" He asked me "Sounds good" I responded ☢After school☢ I knocked on his door and soon enough Lucas opened the door and he smiled at me "Come on let's go in my room to work" he said while taking my hand and I rolled my eyes ⭕Five seconds later⭕ "Ok so I think the answer is 16y ÷ 10x × 200y" I said as I wrote it down and Lucas couldn't stop looking at me "What?" I asked him while staring in his Brownish eyes "Nothing" He responded and I laughed "Ok stalker" I said "I've really missed that.." He began to say "Missed what?" I asked him while looking at him "Your laugh" he responded and we both leaned in to kiss and I could feel him holding onto my waist and I slide my hand down to his chest, right over his heart and I began to feel butterflies in my stomach and we broke the kiss "Max I have to tell you something.." He said while we stared in each others eyes "What is it?" I asked him quietly "I love you Max more than a friend and I always will" he said to me and his grip became tighter on my waist "I..I feel the same way" I said as I looked down and he lifted my chin up and kissed me once more again and again

A familiar voice called my name and I looked behind me only to see my Ex boyfriend Lucas "Go away Lucas.." I said while wiping a tear as I turned back to the Hawkins sunset view "Why did you run away from the group? Is it because you saw a girl flirting with me and maybe you just got jealous?" I didn't say anything and I heard footsteps come next to me "Max…I know something is wrong.." Lucas said to me as I looked at him upset "You know what?
