River

The afternoon sunlight dances on the water’s surface, throwing shafts of gold into the river silt. Cool water laps at her feet, where minnows turn in a glinting, twisting dance. The white-flowered bushes that line the banks of the river seem to whisper. Stay, their voices echo. Stay.

When she was young, they used to say that strange things happened down by the river. People stayed away from the water. It was only mentioned in whispers, on the quiet nights when nothing seemed quite real. When you could hear the sound of running water if you strained your ears.

They’re all gone now. Houses lie empty above the river valley, their gardens overgrown, their rooms full of dust and dead leaves. Some say they left to find work, education, a chance of life outside a dying town. Others tell of a different reason. Long-dead dreams hang in the air, the ghosts of nightmares that were all too real.

The water around her feet is cool and smooth, the sunlight on her back is warm. She sinks into the mud, feels the grit between her toes. Her legs grow roots, burrow down, down, into the riverbed. The white-flowered bushes whisper, and she whispers with them. The river claims its own, they say. The river claims its own.
