tbh i think it's just bc shatterbird has the least relevance of the nine. she never directly fights taylor and stops being a player halfway through the s9 arc due to regent, so it makes sense that she's not given as much attention by the story and she lives on more as a fan favourite. we also only actually see her talk to hookwolf iirc? i just think it's a weird sentiment that tumblr has towards wb that he's racist when at least all the books i've read very prominently and positively feature pocs. also half the characters in worm don't have a civilian name guys like

eh I kinda looked at it as Amy turning Victoria into The Wretch™ was Jack convincing Amy to give into temptation and Amy going to the birdcage was both fueled by her guilt but also her not wanting to undo it in the moment. and then in Ward we're shown that Amy has become the absolute pinnacle of someone who does not want to change, since yk themes of redemption and forgiveness with the amnesty and all. I kinda look at her as more of a character that destroyed herself and is not willing to try to fix herself which I feel works as a good and logical direction for her character.

I think too, people, including myself, were a lot more sympathetic to Amy in Worm largely because we're primed to feel bad for Amy and to not like Victoria. so it's less 'oh my god this girl just turned her sister into a monster that poor girl', and more of a 'poor Amy to be pushed to do this'. and then because Vicky is a 1st pov character we get a LOT of her perspective on how fucked up that was for her and how Amy hasn't really shown any apologies for her actions save for fixing Vicky.

Even ignoring Ward contextualising Amy turning Victoria into the wretch as also raping her in the process, she still turned Victoria into a horrible creature who was mindraped into loving her, and left her like that for 2 years! that's still extremely fucked up.

I totally get that people don't like her characterisation in Ward as far more evil, as she is/was a fan favourite in Worm, but to paint her as a sympathetic character who wasn't that bad does read as a misunderstanding of her character in both Worm and Ward

Moral of the story is turning your sister into a monster and leaving her like that for 2 years for selfish reasons is bad and evil. and also don't rape your sister that's also extremely evil

There definitely gets to be a performance feel to it, like if all you are is the projections of self you give out to others and yourself, what are you? If you were to strip away every act that was curated for a person, in interests or typing style or anything - what's left?

But then, i think people are kinda like mosaics? Like a person is all the people they are and ever have been - all the masks go together to make one larger mask which is oneself.

There's a great episode of BoJack Horseman, where a character begs another to tell him that he's a good person deep down, and she later says she doesn't believe in deep down morality, and that you're just the things you do.

I feel like that's maybe what I'm getting at, that there's no such thing as a true self beneath it all, and maybe people are just the people they put forward.

On your note of teleporters and free will and whatnot, yeah. There is definitely an element of which parts of onself actually are the original self - last thursdayism is interesting for this. But there's this cool buddhist concept which I cannot for the life of me find the name of, that if you were to put your finger in a river, take it out, and then put it back in - you are not touching the same water, but it remains the same river. Maybe that's what it's like, even if identity is a constant Theseus ship it's still the same identity despite everything.

huh what a thought. makes me think of youtubers who get very popular but never do a name or face reveal so it's like well, if so many more people know you by a different identity are you more that identity? sorta at what point does the mask become you situation - course one can just define self in their own perception which throws it all out but it's still weird.
