Can we stop saying Jay should have left everything in Marble Hornets and it would have fixed everything? I’ve thought about it a lot and heard so many people say he actively sabotaged everything by not letting it go and should have dropped it.
Um…
He tried.
TWICE.
Spoilers are ahead.
Now, I come from the camp of “Alex is the main antagonist and not the major bad guy under the Operator’s manipulation and is what fully broken in Operator sickness looks like” camp. I genuinely think a lot of blame isn’t possible to be shifted on one person, though I’ll get into that later.
Now, imagine if your old college friend had started making a film and you find those odd tapes. Wouldn’t you start digging? Yeah, he’s slowly becoming obsessed, but that’s more on the faceless monster following them constantly. Jay’s reaction is a genuinely sane one of “wait, there’s something here? I need to uncover what’s going on.”
As stated previously, he did attempt to quit. In Entry 23, he says straight up he’s not interested in finding answers anymore. After the house, we see him say that he’s done after his camera died, came face to face with the Operator, and a whole myriad of torment, missing chunks of memory, and generally beginning to question his sanity.
Tumblr media
Doesn’t sound like direct confirmation he quit? Fine, there’s also the people who after the series ended didn’t know he had a twitter account. I couldn’t find the original tweet, but I found a reupload of it from 2021. The original was posted on February 3, 2010.
Tumblr media
That statement is saying he deliberately tried quitting. While it partially does hurt my point due to stating he felt functionless and he posted two more times, the important thing to note is that 24 is not camera footage from a tape, but from him doing a disappearing act. I think he considered getting back in, and sort of did, though not in the same way.
Tumblr media
Entry 25 came after ######, which would concern a heck of a lot of people. Remember, Marble Hornets used to be a real time thing and is Unfiction. The audience could interact and see what was going on. If something like that was posted to your socials, you’d want to hop back in to explain on YouTube “I’m not dead, I’m okay, I’m checking into different hotels, but my apartment did burn down.” to the people who follow you, because Jay did have a following.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And finally, the second attempt was after realizing “my life is in danger.” He chose to try to quit after this, and he stated as such in Entry 26.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He was actually done, again. He would have prioritised his mental health and safety over answers… had it not been for the text.
Tumblr media
Seriously, what are you supposed to do in this situation? Let it go? Then the package arrives, shows Alex in genuine danger, and mentions he may be a while, if ever.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Heck, he didn’t post until November of 2010 because of his memory being wiped! I genuinely believe if his memory wasn’t compromised, he’d have stayed undercover.
You can get on Jay for so many things like his lack of empathy and tendencies to stalk people or blackmail to get what he wants. He posted a woman having a mental breakdown, and while it’s understandable why he filmed, he still posted people being held at gunpoint. I will criticise him for that all day long. Those parts of his personality are not great, but criticise THAT. Marble Hornets is a Shakespearian tragedy, and I mean that.
No one person has the full blame. Tim couldn’t help that he received The Operator first or that it came to the set. If he hadn’t brought it, then Brian would have been the source and it’d be impossible to track.
Alex is the victim who didn’t get help, and he’s the one who murdered his fiancé and everyone involved, but Jay also fell prey to Operator Sickness, and he tried to kill Tim, yet I don’t see many people talk about it.
Jay is the person who started it, but he tried to end it TWICE. I can’t overstate that he did try leaving and ALEX was the one who dragged him back in.
No one is solely responsible for Marble Hornets, and we should stop trying to pretend that it’s on one person. If you want to blame someone, blame the faceless cryptid who tormented a child and drove everyone who we want to shirk the blame onto into insanity.

The sexiest thing in fiction for me is for a man to be emotionally vulnerable after struggling to be able to. Same applies to you, ladies!
Oh, and IRL too. I just like when people can be open and vulnerable.

A proposal
Sometimes, in fandom, we just want to write id-tastic fic that rolls around in tropes that might be viewed as problematic. But we don’t want to address the problematic side of things in this particular fanwork; we just want to roll around and wallow.
It is considered courteous to give readers a heads-up via use of AO3 tags. I propose a tag that signals that a given fanwork is for rolling around, not giving a measured evaluation of anything. The MCU has carved out a space for this sort of fic with the “HYDRA Trash Party” tag, for which I commend them. Trash Party is a bit too specific to cover all of the ground I’m thinking of here, though; I propose “Dead Dove: Do Not Eat.”
For those of you not familiar with Arrested Development, Michael Bluth finds a paper bag in the freezer labeled “Dead Dove: Do Not Eat.” He opens the bag, finds a dead dove, and reacts as follows:
Tumblr media
[gif of a white man saying “I don’t know what I expected” in a deadpan manner]
The “Dead Dove: Do Not Eat” tag would essentially be a “what it says on the tin” metatag, indicating “you see the tropes and concepts tagged here? they are going to appear in this fic. exactly as said. there will not necessarily be any subversion, authorial commentary condemning problematic aspects, or meditation on potential harm. this fic contains dead dove. if you proceed, you should expect to encounter it.”

Can we let teenage girls like things? I remember as a teen I kept seeing people talking about how teenage girls were obsessing over Billie Eilish in a mocking way. It stuck with me throughout the years and I haven’t forgotten. Im 20 and still feel bad for listening to Neoni and have just started experimenting with new clothes and going for a more gothic look, all because people were making fun of teenage girls online.
We weren’t allowed to listen to Taylor Swift or any other popular music, but god forbid we want to listen to something on the other end of the spectrum as well. If my sister wants to spend multiple hours on makeup, she’s a basic blonde. If I want to dress like the embodiment of a stormy night, I’m a “not like the other girls” girl. Let teenage girls write their cringy fanfic, listen to their music, and just be them.

Because some people don’t look back at history. It’s doomed to repeat eventually the way we’re going. I’m sick of people voting for the person who’s done actual harm just because his opponent is a black woman.
In a country where the only real options are “Democrats” or “Nazis who will hurt everyone” the only moral thing to do is not only to vote for the Democrats but also do whatever you can to talk other people into voting for them too
When offered two dishes one of which is poison you don’t complain that the one that’s not poison is overcooked

Alternatively… a version where Jason is now concerned since he is the least sleep deprived of the family and that is NEVER a good sign. He pulls out his gun and is going to force them to sleep with bullets in their limbs if necessary. Alfred thanks him for his work. It has been over a week and it was a two person job.
Jason Todd, who tries to do his Red Hood reveal in front of the whole family, all at once, but they are so sleep-deprived that instead of accepting an obvious answer, they come up with the most insane theories.
Jason, spreading his arms wide: The answer is already here, and you know it. Come on, the world's great detective — look at me, and tell, why would the random criminal lord avenge for your son? Hm?
Dick, snapping his fingers: You are his childhood friend! Right?!
Jason: What—
Dick: You knew everything about us. You knew Jason better than we did. It is obvious. You are a kid that he must befriended during his days on the streets. You are avenging for him because we failed him!
Tim, shaking his head: Dick, come on—
Jason: Yeah, exactly, just—
Tim, with the insane glint in his eyes: They were clearly lovers, not friends.
Jason: ...What.
Tim: It is obvious. Just look at him at his desperation. That's more than friendship.
Jason: Come on, Bruce, you can't possibly allow them to be this stupid.
Bruce, sipping on his coffee: No, I won't.
Bruce, turning to Dick and Tim: It is Willis Todd.
Dick, Tim, and Jason in the unison: What—
(Hours later, Jason's safe house)
Jason: ...And then he goes! (clears up his throat to imitate Bruce's voice) "Willis Todd's grave was always empty, but I hadn't paid attention to this fact!" What an insane thing to fucking admit, by the way!
Talia, on the Facetime, doing her nails: Perhaps it is a family trait - to leave the coffins empty... Anyway, what happened after?
Jason: They come up with another theory. Now, they think that Red Hood is "Jason's" reincarnation. Souls switched and stuff. Dunno. They planned to call Constantine, but I left.
Talia: I feel like a nap would resolve this issue.
Jason: Yeah, definitely. But that's not my problem.
Talia: Naturally. But you look happy.
Jason, smirking: I got to annoy the hell of this family without even getting revealed and dealing with the aftermath. Of course, I am happy. Also, Alfred clocked me, but just packed me a lemon pie and invited for a tea ceremony later this week.

I haven’t seen this on my dash so here it is. The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill codifying same-sex marriage and it is now going to the Senate where there really is an actual chance of it passing. Sure, there are assholes who won’t support it, but there are Republican senators willing to support it and we need their support to get this passed. If you live in a state with a Republican senator, please call the senate office telling them that as a constituent, you support same-sex marriage and the Respect for Marriage Act.
The following senators are reported to be undecided, if one of these senators is yours, CALL!!!
Richard Burr, North Carolina
Roy Blunt, Missouri
Mike Braun, Indiana
Joni Ernst, Iowa
Cynthia Lummis, Wyoming
Rand Paul, Kentucky
Mitch McConnell?, Kentucky (yeah, I’m shocked the evil undead gizzard demon is in the undecided category as well but…might as well pressure the fucker)
Mitt Romney, Utah
Mike Rounds, South Dakota (specifically Mr. Rounds is quoted as acknowledging difference between a religious marriage and a legal one, go ahead and specify that you support granting couples the legal rights and protections that are given with a legal marriage)
Rick Scott, Florida
Dan Sullivan, Alaska (notably, Mr. Sullivan is quoted to recognize and respect the existing Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage! Pressure this man!!)
John Thune, South Dakota
Patt Toomey, Pennsylvania
Tommy Tuberville, Alabama
Todd Young, Indiana
This information was gathered from CNN on 7/21/22.
For clarification: Same-sex marriage is legal in all 50 states right now based on the 2015 Supreme Court ruling. But, with the court standing as it is and with Roe being taken down, codifying same-sex marriage in law would mean that the Supreme Court would have a much, MUCH harder time stripping away the right. This is important. Marriage as a legal binding is critical to allowing spouses to visit each other in the hospital, make medical decisions, share assets, adopt and form families, and more. We need TEN Republicans to support the bill, so far there are FIVE likely supporters - we need AT LEAST FIVE MORE.
Please reblog this!!!
