We're going to do a little contest for next week's episode of Metropolis (coming out June 27th!)
Tucked away in the show is an homage to a specific moment from an Akira Kurosawa film.
If you can identify the homage (and the movie) in the Metropolis Discord, I will send you a special recorded message!
-AND-
If you're the *first* one to identify the homage, I will record a special personalized version of the message just for you!
The episode is sounding great so far. Can't wait to share it with you all. 😄
See you on the Discord!

"Is it a lot of fun making audio drama? Or is it really tedious?"

Just published a wee quick production update for Metropolis. The upshot is:
Our next episode – Episode 10: For Those Whose Assassins Will Not Be Cute – will be live on June 27th!
I am a huge stinking perfectionist. (Sorry...)
You should check out @observerpix's Apollyon, which is a seriously good show.
And now back to work... 😅

Oh hey! The incredible musician who did all of the original music in Metropolis (@ffooff) is now on Tumblr!
It was when I was listening to ff00ff's Theme of Metropolis that I knew things on this show were going to turn out A-OK. 😄 You should follow them if you haven't already!
(And if you're ever in the Seattle-Tacoma area, you should definitely check out one of their shows!)

The fact that @camlannpod put out its soundtrack on cassette is indeed just about the coolest thing ever. Truly some life goals for Metropolis.

Very excited to listen to the @camlannpod soundtrack on cassette! It arrived on a ludicrously-chilly Australian afternoon when the moss was growing bright green after rain in my driveway, just a few days before my birthday and a month before the 1 year anniversary of my first listen too, how lovely and on-theme!
I will be hopefully getting an actual cassette deck soon but in the meantime everyone should listen to Camlann and tell the folks at @tincanaudio how much you love it (as loud as you can so we can all revel in new seasons!)

Hello everyone! How’s your summer going? Mine’s great because my summer job involves being outside and listening to audio drama all day! It’s Audio Drama Sunday!
🔧 I am a huge fan of podcast musicals in general, so a musical retelling (or untelling) of the Odyssey? Hearthbound had me from the jump. And the STYLE of musical it is hits so hard on this road trip story. It feels lonesome in a way I never got from the Odyssey, but really should have, because yeah, Odessa truly is just out there on her own. I can’t wait for more.
🧠 The phrase, “He beat you with his big wet brain!” is gonna stick with me for a while. Thank you @killjamxxx. As usual, I owe this show my life. This might be the most teacherly thing I’ve said in a hot minute, but I find a contract gotcha to be a wildly satisfying win. I hope things turn around for Faustina and I love that even “desperately shooting a commercial for much less than she’s worth” is a fun and violent episode.
🐜 I am very excited for the new series of The Adventure Zone, but can I just say—if you like this premise, you should check out Warlock! It has the added bonus of feeling almost exactly like watching an anime, plus the complicated magical worldbuilding and individual arcane gifts that Royale is promising us. Check it out!
🫁 As per usual, @thegospelofhaven hits right in the guts. This episode described itself as Isiah finding a problem and Rebecca finding a solutionbut what’s excellent is that it’s also the opposite. Isiah finds the answer to what’s actually happening to Haven, and Rebecca creates an entirely new awful problem. It’s amazing how when you live in and worship the body of your god, you put so much emphasis on the god part that it’s easy to forget about the body. The viscerality of this show really comes through this episode.
🤖 Oh jeez. Oh heck. So I’m eight episodes in to @luxradium’s Metropolis, due to catch up at some point today, and Nan is on the run and too many people know her secret and Oliver has secrets of his own and the island is worse than anyone thought, and I have a theory, because no one ever dies in Metropolis…what a freakin great show.
That’s it for me! Join me this week in touching grass, it’s good for you, especially doing so while trying not to gasp at plot twists. See you next week!

In audio drama, you've got to make it for the love of it. There is no other reason.
It is awfully nice when other people like it too, though. 😂

I FORGOT how easily berno cracked. Nan didnt even yell, she was just a bit firm. Also nan exemplary "women who arent good at being comforting". 10/10 'oh god what do i do now' voice.

I always imagine the end announcement voice as a shadowy figure wearing an old 30s suit and fedora in greyscale. But also orangey warm tones. Figured you may be interested in the vibe it projects? Anyways big fan.
I love it! It certainly keeps in line with the vibe of the show (and the backing music), so I'm glad the immersion can extend a little bit past when the curtain drops on the actual 'narrative' part of the show! I don't quite have Orson Welles' pipes, but then again, who does. 😄 Thank you so much for enjoying Metropolis - it really does make this whole thing worthwhile. We've all got a story screaming in our head that we want to share, thanks for enjoying mine now that I've gotten some of it out!

❤️❤️❤️🤖🤖🤖😄!!!
OMG do I love this!! This is the essence of Nan. I can just imagine the keys pounding louder and louder as she gets angry. 😂

ID - A pen and highlighter drawing of Nan Kanally with an old 1920s era typewriter as a head. She is facing slightly off to the right, with one arm raised towards her head. She is wearing a dress shirt with lapel pins, a tailored waistcoat, and a dark shall around her shoulders.
Nan, readying for her ascension to Gods Plate
Since I started listening to Metropolis I couldn't get object-head characters out of my mind, blame the cover art lol.
I need to come up with some ideas for the other characters, but typewriter nan is something set in my mind.
Anyways, this is your reminder to go listen to @luxradium 's Metropolis because it is really cool and awesome and has fun characters who I love

We were just having a lively discussion on the Metropolis Discord (join us here!) about what the characters in the show look like. As you do, when it comes to audio drama. @trashburgersblair pointed out that because of the cover art of the show, she sometimes imagines the characters – including the human characters – as having objects for a head instead of a boring old human-shaped head.
Three thoughts immediately came to mind from this:
I absolutely love this.
This is why I love audio drama.
What would those objects be for these characters!?
Let me ask you this, fellow audio drama fan. For your favorite characters in your favorite show – if they had an object in lieu of a human head, what would that object be?

For Audio Drama Sunday*, I wanted to give a quick shoutout to @wrongdimensionproductions and their show Twilight Meridian.
If you like what Metropolis has been doing for the 1920s, there's an extremely good chance you'll love what Twilight Meridian does for the 1930s. It's a beautiful production and very much worth checking out!
(*I know, I know, it's Monday... 😅)

😊🤖❤️🙏! An incredible honor to be in @chemicallywrit's Audio Drama Sunday lineup this week with some incredible shows (all of which you should check out!). (Also, while I'm in the process of telling you things you should do 😅... you should be following chemicallywrit! This weekend writeup is one of the absolute best ways to find great AD.)
HAPPY AUDIO DRAMA SUNDAY, I love audio drama and here’s some I really enjoyed this week.
🎻 The way that @hellofromthehallowoods builds horror and suspense is delicious. The systemic work of the quartet ripping through our heroes, the real and present fear I have for their welfare, the way that we are still SO MANY episodes away from the finale and YET, so CLOSE—I’m on the edge of my seat.
⏰ This episode of @vestaclinicpod was masterfully crafted. I love a time loop anyway, but the idea of it having a completely grounded explanation AND health effects is downright inspired. And Olea Aander is such a delightful scoundrel of a character. Like talk about someone so smart it makes them dumb. Every explanation they tried to make could have been clarified by saying, “Because of this time device here, I know that…” But no, too busy being condescending. I love them.
📕 As usual, @monstrousproductions’ Travelling Light gives me the emotions. Not only do I love a used bookseller that can’t stand to sell anything, I really liked the simple little interaction between the Traveller and Óli doing dishes, and even though I’m frustrated by the Traveller stunting their own growth while encouraging Óli’s, it’s a very solid character choice to make. It’s a satisfying frustration. Hope they figure themself out before they lose the love of their life!
🔥 You know, @theheartpyre spent a long time doing character dynamics and hints of magic and secret cults and now…THIS. This week’s episode properly freaked me out. It was excellent. It felt like the chaotic end of a choose-your-own-adventure book, but aren’t we lucky? It doesn’t end here. Rena is such an interesting protagonist—you’d expect this particular type of character to be training or have some innate ability that makes her cool and powerful, but it’s been like a week since her village was destroyed and she is extremely ordinary. Her main talent is making cool friends, and being a great sister, and I love that for her.
📰 This week I started listening to @luxradium’s Metropolis and every one of you needs to join me. It is compelling, a really perfect audio experience, incredibly acted, and I’m obsessed with the way they talk about and use journalism. Nan is a fantastic protagonist, and I am all for “I have to save my best friend” as a character motivation. I’m just three episodes in and the world already feels vast.
That’s it for me! Hey, you know what would be great? To make it to Thursday without overdrafting. If you like what I do, consider buying me a ko-fi.
Until next week!
