Gladstone waits for the clock to be activated, watching as the mechanical bird comes out of the clock. He expects there to be some sort of twist, knowing that Ludwig wouldn't be nearly as excited about showing his invention if it were just a standard cuckoo clock.

When the bird shoots out, the lucky gander takes a moment to observe before he tries to retrieve the bird for the professor.

"Don't worry, Dad! I've got it!"

Running after the bird, Gladstone manages to catch it with relative ease. He goes to return the bird to Ludwig with a small smile.

"Are you alright? You didn't fall too hard, did you?"

 Gladstone can’t help but chuckle a little himself, not meaning any ill-will. He knows Ludwig is more than clever, but he’s also amused by how kooky he could be.

When Aunt Matilda first brought the little one home, he was worried Ludwig would be as cold and stern as Goosetav had been. Luckily for him, the professor was far from being as stiff as his other father was. It wasn’t like he couldn’t be serious at times, but he had and will always treasure the little lighthearted moments they share.

“Ah, a cuckoo clock! Alright then…let’s try it out!”

“Okay! Here ve go!” The old drake hops up and digs through his lab coat to find his remote. Now, once his machine was furbished and marketed to the public, it wouldn’t need a remote to activate it. It’s just that right now an hour wasn’t coming up, so Ludwig would need to activate it remotely.

“Van! Two! Three!” And after pressing the big button…nothing happens. Well, the little mechanical bird comes out of the clock for its normal cuckoo! sound, but afterworlds; nothing. “MMhhh, what’s da’ matta’ with you?” He asks the machine, banging his first against the side of it.

At once the little bird shot out an bonked Ludwig on his forehead, sending the inventor onto his back. The bird continued to fly away, causing Ludwig to shoot his hand into the air. “Quick! Catch it!”

"Y'know, if someone wants a good uncle who'll be present an' all, I'm willing to take the responsibility. Unlike some people..."

"How come people are allowed to take advantage of my luck and then pretend they're too good for me once I've outlived my purpose? How's that fair??"

 “Sure thing, Profather…I mean, Dadfessor…er…I’m coming!”

Gladstone is soon by Ludwig’s side, looking at the new invention with the same enchantment he would have as a child. He wouldn’t dare openly admit it, but the childish wonder he had about his surrogate father and his creations never left him completely. It’s still incredible how one man can build so many gadgets and whatnot by himself.

“What does this one do? I’m very excited to see this in action!”

“Oh, just anotha’ vonderful doohickey!” Ludwig says, twirling a wrench in one hand before clumsily dropping it on the floor. The scientist/inventor gives a tiny embarrassed laugh and goes back to his work. 

It was no surprise to anyone that Ludwig still cherished moments like these between himself and Gladstone. Ever since the day Matilda brought the little tyke home, Ludwig had a fondness over him.

“Da little coo-coo bird on da’ top is supposeda’ fly off when da’ clock strike an hour. So we gonna see if dat works!”

“OH! Sohn! Come ova’ here an’ put your good luck ta’ use, yes?” Ludwig smiles from where he stood. Another invention was being made, it looked like some kind of clock, but one could never be sure when it came down to it. “I vant ta’ make sure dis one vorks da’ first time!”

Gladstone is silent. He doesn't know how to reply to that.

After a moment of thought, he has the nerve to speak.

"That paper isn't legally binding. In a week or so, things will be back to normal. I'm sure of it."

Now it's time to change the topic before this got any further.

"Are you living with Nestor full time now? You two still together?"

“But-” Fethry tugs at his hat and looks at the floor, going quiet for a little bit. But what? Fethry himself often wished his parents had given him up. Maybe this is the right decision.

“Do you love her?” He asks quietly. “Don’t lie please.”

Gladstone can't even utter his own child's name.

He knows he doesn't have much to defend himself with and whatever he says will never be enough.
