Amulet: A special charm worn on the person it was specifically designed for

Anointing: Act of blessing, protecting, or fortifying an individual using a type of specialized oil

Blessing: Covers a variety of processes, carrying out a ritual, cleanse, or spell that brings luck and good fortune

Bottle Tree: A dead tree covered in colourful bottles believed to ward off evil spirits and negative energy

Cold reading: Following a pre-defined set of steps to find out hidden or mysterious details about a person

Condition Oils: spiritually charged oils that are prepared to address very specific problems

Crossing and uncrossing: crossing is spiritual works that cause harm or bad luck, while uncrossing reverses it

Crossroads: Place of great energy and spiritual power

Curse: special kind of spell or ritual cast to cause a specific form of harm to a person

Divination: spiritual information gathering process

Dressing: the application of conditioning oil onto the surface of inanimate objects that are relevant to a ritual or spell process

Feeding: When conditioning oils are specifically applied to a mojo bag

Foot Track Magic: Throwing powders and gris gris in the path of a targeted person. Basically a type of curse

I’ve talked here about knowing your family (whether born into it or raised into it) and its history as key to successful and fruitful ancestor veneration, but I want to drive home why that matters with an example: not all benevolent ancestors are willing to be benevolent towards you.

The reality is that ancestors can hold grudges, they can simply dislike someone for whatever personal reason; they may choose to work against the children of whoever they don’t like, or with whom issues remain unresolved. The grudges don’t die with the body! And sometimes, as they watch their bloodline expand or contract, they find even more reason to be aggrieved. You may think that you have an untroubled family history and then find out the hard way that noooope, there are Issues. And you should know that before random ancestors you haven’t even met decide to punish you for shit that happened 300 years ago.

Yes…it be like that.

The first and effective way to navigate this carefully is to call primarily on the ancestors who know you well enough to answer and liked you enough in life to hear you out. If none, your higher self has greater perception than you; literally ask for help in controlling your space so that no spirit that isn’t willing to honor and support you may come through your altar. And study your family history as best as you can, so that you’re not naming or attracting or honoring folks who highkey do not fuck with you and will be trifling enough to still demand you serve them.
