Redo/Undo
Untitled Medium: Mixed Media For this piece (first picture above), I made a remake of my first work that is a self portrait of me and added an element of my last project, Lineart. I decided to make myself in black in white so the pink would pop out. At first this piece was supposed to be threads and thumbnails but it didn’t work so what I did is to reuse the canvas and make another piece in which it succeeded. The dots make a nice touch to this work and I left the background in white because it would look less distracted and I wanted to show off the dots.

“Lineart”

“Lineart” by Mariel Santos, 2017. Performance, 4:10 For this project, I wanted to replace the mediums I use the most, the sketchbook and the pen with the wall and two colored (blue and pink) threads. I took advantage of the nails and decided to play around and draped the threads around them and created this line piece. After I finished this, I realized how I’m always been comfortable by making pieces at the same scale, perhaps I find it pleasing to do it that way.

QCQ 4: How to See the World  by Nicholas Mirzoeff Chapter 7: Changing the World
Quote: “ Occupy and other urban protests had the advantage of working in a media environment that was already saturated with images and therefore with an audience  skilled in visual analysis (even if they might not put it themselves). The 99% Tumblr and the pepper-spray video went viral in part because their audiences were adept at sharing and disseminating media content.”
Comment: We live in an era where we can see everything through the phone. With the existence of social media, it’s easier to connect to others through screen. Also we have this constant need of wanting to see what’s on the internet. It’s like we are used of being glued on the phone that much we don’t want to miss what’s happening on Facebook, Twitter, or Tumblr. I think this would be helpful for organization groups, like Occupy, to spread awareness through social networks since we spend much time using our phones it is most likely to see these posts and -if we are conscious about it- we share it so others can see. Nowadays we see videos and images of protests around Facebook thus it’s hard to miss anything; even people makes memes of certain situations just for the fun of it. Question: Could you do more than just sharing?
