In the never-quite-daylight of Purgatory, Dean lay on the riverbank. Teeth chattering, body shaking in bone-deep cold.

He was dead if he didn’t find warmth.

Crossing the river when the vamps attacked, Dean had been knocked into the water in the fight. Swept downstream, pinballed against the rocks, he’d eventually managed to haul himself out of the water.

Crawling towards the shelter of a fallen tree, fingers numb and shaking, Dean stripped his wet clothes.

Benny and Cas were out there. Clinging to that thought, darkness pulled at his vision.

They’d follow the river to find him.

If they lived.

“This will hurt,” Cas warned. “The arrowhead is buried deep.”

In a hollow near the river, beneath dark and twisted trees, Castiel knelt over Dean. Knife in hand.

“Just do it. They’ve already caught our scent.”

Cas handed him his knife’s sheath to bite down on. He cut into Dean’s flesh, manoeuvring the blade to free the arrowhead.

Eyes bright with pain, fingers scrabbling in dirt, Dean bit on the leather sheath and tried not to scream.

Quickly finished, Castiel packed and wrapped the wound, hauling Dean to his feet. They stood, back-to-back, weapons in hand. 

The hunting pack howled.

Another fanon narrative I reject: I actually think Dean would be unbearably soft toward his past self. He'd take one look at teenage Dean and suffocate with the urge to protect and comfort. Like a knife to the heart, Dean'd finally realize *oh my god I was a kid.*

Future!Dean puts his hands on past!Dean's shoulders and tells him, "Listen to me, man, it sucks right now. I know. *Believe me,* I know. But you're going to make it. Through literal hell, you'll make it. And you save Sammy. You do. I promise. You save the whole goddamn world. And that shit you feel inside you? That shit you believe? Eventually, you don't believe it anymore. Eventually, you have friends who love you and a family who loves you. Do you hear me? Do you hear me, kid? You fucking make it."
