i ended up gutting my phone of google services by installing lineageOS only, and i mostly only use apps i can install via fdroid. what potentially needed in a pinch apps i can't get have working browser versions (uber, my email provider, my bank).

i have aurora store too, that directly downloads the .apk files from google play. some apps work mostly fine without google services, like discord. which is the only chat app i have on my phone as well as signal. i don't have notifications turned on for chat apps.

duolingo's app works okay w/o google services too, just the exercises where you speak into the mic don't work, but i can do without those. it must use some kind of google voice service.

setting up my phone this way has meant i'm more organised, because i don't have a thousand notifications to distract me. i plan my route to where i need to go before i leave the house. i only check my emails when at home where i can dedicate time to them, and not just swipe a notification away and forget.

the battery life on my phone is phenomenal because all i use it for is podcasts, sms/calls, duolingo, occasional discord messages, and occasional navigation (OpenStreetMap is good, and any addresses missing you can contribute yourself. my only issue is sometimes it takes a while to find my gps location, so i just make sure location is enabled while i'm getting ready to leave the house.) also google services running in the background are enormous battery drainers.

i think the funniest side effect of all this is my neck pain got so much better cos i'm not staring at my phone for ages. and i don't feel constantly anxious, because i'm not constantly reachable. it's let me take back time for myself. it's reduced the amount of urgency in my life.

You don't need a separate, dumber device. It is within your power to make your current smartphone dumb as shit, a real idiot.

people want to know if someone is a "safe" person and it's messy and hard and requires communication and coming to an understanding, i strongly believe this is why the queer community goes insane at people saying even mildly ignorant stuff. we're so afraid all of the time. which, fair, but it's not how we Become A Part Of Society.
