listen, there is absolutely nothing that gets me going like mutual seemingly unrequited pining like? i live for both people losing their minds over the other person in bitter silence. savoring every single accidental brush of their fingers, elbows, thighs, every stray glance, memorizing every gesture or expression they catch while the other isn’t looking, all while being absolutely convinced that it’s one-sided only to finally!! finally find out it wasn’t in a triumphant moment of bliss after years and years of delicious, soul-rending, torturous, heart-wrenching pining. i literally don’t care about the fact that this trope is predictable af and always plays out the same way i will still go wild over it every single time like they’ll be doing the same reveal scene i have seen a million times and i’m still on the edge of my seat gasping “are they gonna kiss???”

I feel like I’m in the wrong world. ‘Cause I don’t belong in a world where we don’t end up together.

I said this in the tags of my reblog, but apparently I have Feelings about it, so what the hell, lets make it a post. I know everyone’s talking about Eric cheating on Adam, and his reaction to Adam saying it wasn’t what he wanted when they were about to have sex. And those were both things that attributed to my not shipping Adam/Eric anymore. But honestly, they were just nails in the coffin for me. This, right here? This is what killed the ship.
Devoid of all other context, it’s just such an… I don’t want to say cruel, but ungenerous? cold? reaction from Eric. This mocking disbelief that Adam, who is his boyfriend, and who he supposedly loves, could ever write poetry. And okay, yeah, we all know Adam doesn’t have the reputation as the smartest, most sensitive guy around, but he’s also been making such huge strides in working on himself and you would think Eric would be the first person to notice. To entertain the possibility that hey, maybe Adam has some previously unseen depth.
And like I said, that’s devoid of all other context. With context, we know that, after Adam realizes Eric liked poetry, the first thing he does is goes and reads a poetry book (Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair by Pablo Neruda):

And then he writes some poetry himself! And not only that, but he asks Rahim, Eric’s ex, who he’s been actively jealous of this season, for help. And does all of that simply because Eric likes poetry.
Tumblr media
And this is the poem he ends up writing!
I never knew I had a heart Till you said you kissed a boy I haven’t met Then I knew I had a heart Because I thought it might stop And when I thought My heart might stop beating I realized it had always been there But it didn’t know how to feel Until I thought about losing you I knew we wouldn’t last forever I was waiting for this day But I hope we can fix things And if we can’t I will always thank you For showing me I have a heart
With all of that in mind, Eric’s reaction to the idea of Adam writing him poetry just becomes this flashing neon sign that Eric never actually saw Adam for who he really is—or even thought there was much of anything to see bellow the surface. So yeah. That’s what killed the ship for me.
(And like I said in the tags, not to turn this into an Adam/Rahim thing—although seriously, hello ship I never saw coming, but have enthusiastically boarded now—all of this does make Rahim’s “You’re not as unremarkable as I thought.” even more notable to me.)
(And not that this is a competition of who treated the other one worse, but just in case, yeah, Adam used to bully Eric. And if Eric had decided that was too big of a problem to have a relationship with Adam, that would be one thing. But he didn’t. Eric decided to forgive Adam for his past behaviour and start a relationship with him. And at that point, for me, the only thing that matters is the current behaviour of the people in the relationship. Just because Adam used to treat Eric badly does not change or excuse the fact that, even ignoring the cheating, wow did Eric not cover himself in glory here.)

He thought you were brilliant. It just took the Doctor to show you that, simply by being with him. He did the same to me.

Why, even ignoring the incest/self-cest, Sylki is still a terrible pairing
1. Sylvie is a terribly written character
Sylvie has virtually no personality outside of being a #girlboss Mary Sue. Her only purpose in the show is to be the “superior Loki” - she gets to be the badass while making Loki look like a blithering idiot by comparison. Even though this show is supposed to be centered around Loki, he does virtually nothing throughout the whole series, and Sylvie is the one they want us to be hyping around, even though we have no prior connection with her. For a creative team that claims to love Loki, they certainly seem to hate him.
2. Sylvie does not give a shit about Loki
If the writers of this show were trying to convince me that Sylvie at any point reciprocates Loki’s feelings for her, they did a terrible job of it, because I do not buy it for a SECOND. They have absolutely no chemistry whatsoever. Any time Loki tries to convey his feelings for her, Sylvie doesn’t look happy or in love. If anything, she just looks uncomfortable. Not to mention, in the scene where Loki gets pruned right in front of her, she has virtually no reaction at all. She isn’t sad or upset that Loki’s gone, because Loki was never a priority to her. She constantly belittles him, invalidates his trauma, and tells him to shut up when he tries to speak his mind. Any time Loki brings up his past, she immediately shuts him down because what she went through was sooooo much worse. That is not what Loki needs in a romantic partner. Loki needs someone who makes him feel valued and understood, not yet another character who uses every chance they get to treat him like shit. But apparently, the way she treats him is perfectly acceptable, because the writers want you to believe that Loki is nothing but a pompous narcissist who doesn’t deserve sympathy or respect and needs to be “put in his place.” The fact that they are trying to pass this off as a positive relationship feels, to me, like an example of the toxic brand of feminism where women push men around and invalidate their feelings in the name of “being progressive” instead of working with them to create an equitable environment for everyone.
3. The relationship is incredibly forced and rushed
We literally spend one 42-minute-long episode getting to know Sylvie before Loki suddenly decides, out of nowhere, that he’s in love with her. In a four-hour-long, six-episode show, that is not nearly enough time to develop a well-established relationship. And for a character like Loki, who they are trying to establish has trust issues, it seems ridiculous that he would allow himself to fall in love with someone and become that vulnerable around them after spending only a day with them. Keep in mind that this is 2012 Loki, a character who has just escaped the influence of the Black Order, where it was heavily implied that he was tortured and mind-controlled. He should be on his guard constantly and be wary of the idea of even being allies with anyone, much less falling in love with them.
Long story short, even if the incest/self-cest thing doesn’t make you uncomfortable, Sylki is still a shit pairing and a clear demonstration of how Kate Herron and Michael Waldron fundamentally do not understand or respect Loki’s character.
