This blog shares my insights from five local businesses in Cagayan de Oro, showing how passion and innovation can lead to success. All these businesses together inspire aspiring entrepreneurs and point out the significance of resilience and community in growing a successful business.
The story of Steve’s Barbecue highlights the power of creativity and hard work in starting a business. The original owner, Mrs. Criselda Ibanez Carson, started with nothing but determination. Back then she borrowed P150 from a neighbor to sell peanuts and cigarettes at Cogon Market. Steve's barbeque started as cart business.
As the business grows, day by day, she wanted to name the business after her husband, Steve which now named as Steve's Barbeque. Now, it has more branches around CDO and one of the pioneers of grilling houses along JR Borja Extension in Cagayan de Oro City, Steve’s Barbecue is not just a restaurant; it embodies the spirit of resilience. Mrs. Criselda’s secret to their flavorful barbecue is simple yet profound: “marinated with love.” Despite facing many challenges over the years, the business has thrived, proving that passion and determination can overcome any obstacle. Mrs. Criselda’s commitment and "love" to her cooking inspired everyone, including myself, to pursue our passions wholeheartedly and strive for success. Now, in their 3rd branch, Maam Dulce Asoy, the owner and operator, utilizes technologies like digital ordering system and inventory system for their supplies, provide quality and builds welcoming environment to the customers.
NLM Consumer Goods Trading

Next Level Millennial shortly 'NLM' Consumer Goods Trading shows how innovative thinking and adaptability can drive business success. She advises aspiring entrepreneurs to save money and invent creatively and recycle resources to create marketable products, serving as an inspiring example for those finding the evolving market environment.
Blend and Bloem
Blend and Bloem is a fruit and vegetable store that just recently opened their doors in February 2024, emphasizing the growing call for fresh produce and access. With negotiable discounts to PWD and students, the healthy food is within reach for everybody. Their changing from being an online shop into actual places in Ororama, Buena Oro Macasandig, SM Uptown and SM Downtown symbolizes how they listen and make themselves comply with the needs of their clients, because they really value their customers. Despite issues with delivery, which translates into lesser stocks, it is actively managed to remain fresh by the owner who is aware of specific fruits coming from distant parts of the Philippines. Their aim of selling their daily display will eventually prove to be a waste-reducing move toward selling as much as possible. Overall, Blend and Bloem serves fruit lovers who support community involvement and encourages sustainability.
Anster Autoworks
From its launch in 2019 to date, the Anster Autoworks company has build relationship with its clients-majorly business people who use their vehicles for daily operations. Through active engagement with customers on platforms such as Facebook Marketplace, Anster Autoworks represents the influence of modern connectivity with inquiries and relationship. What makes them unique is their commitment to upholding the promise of informing customers, especially if they are not frequent visitors of the shop. Through continuous updates about what's being done for their automobile from pictures and videos of their vehicle, they build trust and loyalty among clients. It not only adds value to the customer experience but to repetitive business as well, since the attention their vehicle receives would be an important consideration on the part of the clients, so they would keep coming back. Anster Autoworks, in general, is a very excellent example of how modern businesses could really succeed by combining technology with reality. It shows that repairing cars is not an end but brings people together and makes them feel cared for and supported.
KARRFASSST Car Accessories
Marwin, a-company installation technician says that hands-on experience in dealing with customers is of prime importance. KARRFASSST Car Accessories demonstrates how one can be on the top by relying on the client relationship and on the quality of service to boom the company. By providing discounts and even free services, KARRFASSST tries to bring in loyalty and pushes customers to bring in their vehicles regularly for maintenance. Altogether, KARRFASSST, with its commitment to satisfying the customer and efficient working, has thus been the most trusted name in the market of automotive accessories, as it has practically been in business for nearly 30 years.

Running a business is like going on a rollercoaster—full of ups and downs, but always packed with lessons. From my experiences watching different businesses we interviewed, I’ve seen how important it is to be resilient, think outside the box, and have the support of the community. Standing out in a crowded market is tough, and it takes a solid plan that speaks directly to your customers.

Shek Coffee nailed it by combining two different business ideas into one, pulling in more customers, coming up new menu items and boosting profits. It shows how creativity can set you apart from the competition.
I realized that being a business owner isn’t just about the hustle—it’s about the sacrifices. Whether it’s time, money, or energy, entrepreneurs give their all, even when tough decisions come into play. It’s inspiring to see how their commitment pushes them forward, not just for their own vision, but for their employees and customers, too.

Take Avocalicious, for instance. They focus on the health of their customers, particularly moms and the elderly. By doing so, they’ve built a loyal following and created a brand that really cares for the community.

Another example is Healthy Basket, which teamed up with local bakers by supplying strawberries, proving that small businesses can thrive through collaboration and mutual support.

Horikohi’s coffee shop stands out, too. Even in a market packed with coffee options, they found their niche and ran with it, thanks to careful research and a family-first approach that makes their customers feel right at home.

Lastly, TwinDrops’ backstory highlights the importance of problem-solving. Despite early struggles with water supply and staff issues, they powered through, showing resilience and adaptability, which are key to long-term success.
At the end of the day, every business faces challenges, but with creativity, teamwork, and a focus on customer needs, success is within reach. They are an amazing entrepreneurs who push through the hard times come out stronger and more capable of thriving in their industries which aspires us to become one.

MBTI: The Life as an INFJ
After completing the MBTI test and realizing that I am an INFJ, I was amazed by how closely the answers matched my reality. It's as if the test exposed an important aspect of who I am. I am the kind of person who doesn’t know the word ‘rest’ until the work is done. When I have a goal or a task, I push myself until I see it through. It’s not just about getting things done; it’s about making sure everything is right, and that I’ve given it my all.
Sometimes, I feel like I’m carrying the weight of the world on my shoulders. It’s not that anyone asked me to—it’s just that I can’t help but see the pain and struggles of those around me. I notice the small things: a look of sadness, a quiet sigh, or the way someone’s voice changes when they’re hiding something. It’s like I have this built-in radar for emotions, and even if I try to ignore it, I can’t turn it off.
When I’m working on a task with my team, I’m the one who listens deeply, offering thoughtful insights and ensuring everyone’s voice is heard. I’m committed to the collective goal, often taking on more responsibility if it means helping the team succeed. I’m not the loudest in the room, but I’m always there, quietly guiding, supporting, and making sure we’re on the right path.
I don’t open up easily because, honestly, not everyone gets it. My thoughts are deep and complex, and I worry about being misunderstood or judged. I don't share my problems, and some friends have told me that I’m super caring but not vocal about it. They say I’m not the clingy type, but the truth is, I really care about the people around me. I might not always show it in obvious ways, but I’m always thinking about how I can support them, even if it’s from a distance.
I’m always thinking about how I can help, how I can make things better, not just for the people I care about but for the world as a whole. I have this vision of how things should be—fairer, kinder, more just. And it frustrates me when reality doesn’t match that vision. But instead of shouting about it, I prefer to work quietly, behind the scenes, crafting plans and strategies to bring that vision to life.
When I do connect with someone on that deeper level, it’s like magic. I value those relationships more than anything because they’re precious to me. What kind of MBTI are you? Take the test: Free Personality Test | 16Personalities

Berkeley Index Test: A Journey of Resilience and Growth
Taking the Berkeley Index test gave me a lot of realizations about how I handle challenges. I’m someone who doesn’t give up easily—I push through setbacks and try to learn from them. Although negative feedback may affect me, I’m learning from it. I value different perspectives and make it a point to learn from others. I believe in my abilities and am motivated to overcome obstacles, which shows that I’m quite confident and can prioritize tasks effectively.
I’m open to working with others because I see the importance of sharing ideas. I want to hear their thoughts and suggestions as I share my plans with them, and I strive to solve conflicts in a positive way. While I might prefer sticking to my comfort zone, I have a strong desire to grow and adapt, which means I’m willing to try new things when needed. Even though innovation and entrepreneurship might not be my strongest areas, I know I can be creative and solve problems well. Overall, I’m resilient, resourceful, and confident in my ability to contribute to any team.
Some people might suggest that someone like me, who’s resilient and confident, could be seen as stubborn or too focused on their own goals. But in reality, I’m always open to collaboration and appreciate what others bring to the table. I might not always jump into new things right away, but once I see the value, I’m ready to adapt and grow.
