An anxious hoe who happens to be a writer.|she/her|Aro-Pan|complete video game nerd (mostly danmaku games, especially Len'en)|perpetual tag rambler| I reblog from a lot of sources, so don't be too freaked out if I do it to ya while scrolling (wouldn't recommend following unless you are a fellow Len'en fan though).

I think people tend to assume that any criticism of worldbuilding is ultimately a demand for a story to grind itself to a halt and give the reader 20 paragraphs of exposition, and like. Most of the time good-faith criticism of this nature is coming from a core aspect of the story not being grounded in the setting in a way that outright detracts from the story's quality. You fix it not by Explaining but by Showing it passively in the makeup of the world.
Like the last instance I saw this critique in was like 'you can't expect an author to stop and exposit the nuances of gender roles/Queerness in a fictional society' and it's like yeah I don't, and in fact this is actually one of the easiest things to show in the text without exposition. If a society has gender norms to begin with you'll see aspects of these norms baked into EVERYTHING. You'll see it in its stories, its religion, its taboos, its etiquette, its clothing, its family structures, its language, its insults, its labor, its leadership, etc. It will have massive impacts on how characters interact with one another and how they perceive themselves. It will help Shape your characters.
If you do this legwork to begin with for the core facets of your story, you will find very natural places for this concept to be demonstrated without derailing the plot and with little to no exposition. THAT sort of thing is what's being asked of you.

*Dusts off the cobwebs off this stupid blog.* Yep, hello. I'm still alive. I've just cozied up in my den (that being a very stressful and busy real life at the moment), which has tanked my ability to do things I normally enjoy doing. I was tagged on this though and I got a moment, so I might as well do this too.
Total Number of AO3 Works: 21, technically, as some of them are bundles. And totally not 23 due to a similarly named smut alt, no siree...
Total AO3 Word Count: 97,479, it seems. Was hoping to break 100k this year, but I'm not counting on it lol.
Fandoms I've Written For: Len'en is my main fandom, but I'm not a stranger in the Pikmin fandom as well. I've also dabbled in Touhou and original works before, and have my eyes on delving into more lol.
Top 5 Fics By Kudos: The entire "To Be" series in order + a random fic collection lol.
Do I Respond To Comments: I try to! Don't always succeed though. Terribly sorry, comment in my inbox at the time of writing. I swear, I will get to you one day!
What Has The Most Angst-Ridden Ending?: To Live, easily. To quote myself at the time in the tags, "good god this fic is bleak". Normally, I aim for a chance at things turning around for the unfortunate character my scalpel is on at the moment. "To Be" is no exception to this, as the others are like that. "To Live" is the most striking aversion that comes to mind for me (and presumably my other readers). That fic is still probably the bleakest thing I've ever written. And while, sure, the other entries do dull the throbbing bleakness somewhat, "To Be" is still an incredibly bleak series about a middle-aged man losing literally everything and having to deal with that. Couldn't have it any other way, to have an entry of it on this question lol.
What Has The Happiest Ending?: Either First Greetings or The Ice Cream Merchant . Both are fluff fics at heart, the former even enhanced by the knowledge that Yaorochi and Sukune start living together in canon. I've been told both are incredibly cute, so maybe I'm not terrible at that fluff thing.
Have I Received Hate?: I've received weird comments before. I wouldn't say full on hate, but I have gotten some...questionable comments before. I usually delete or ignore them though, these days, and it's been a while too. Guess it's just part of life, unfortunately.
Do I write smut? If so, what kind?: Now what ever would give you that idea? No weird Len'en smut here. No siree. Nothing of interest, certainly...
Do I Write Crossovers?: The hard answer at the moment is "no". But the more nuanced answer is "Man, I want to write a crossover or two". I have a lot of ideas for them. Like that one black comedy Madoka Magica AU idea centered on Tsubakura I had. Man, I need to come back to that one, that one had potential lol.
Have I Ever Had A Fic Translated?: Nope, I write too long for that. But man, would it be cool.
Have I Ever Co-Written A Fic?: Also no. Also would be cool with the right people.
A WIP I will never finish: I'd be here all day listing them, but currently the one haunting my dreams is a little Pikmin longfic centered on a couple severely mentally ill OCs grappling with their own issues at the same time as PNF-404. And also totally not secretly a crime drama. I want to finish it so badly tho...
Writing Strengths: I've been told I'm incredibly good at getting in the mindscapes of POV characters before. That and subtle use of prose, apparently. What can I say, I like my rhythms lol. Also, I'm not terrible at worldbuilding, going by my influence in my fandoms lol.
Writing Weaknesses: Setting is a big one. I always feel like my characters are stuck in a blank void after a while. Also, I'm kinda terrible at hiding my plot twists lol. You can easily figure any of them out if you know where to look or know my favorite tropes. I think I'm decent at proper execution at least, according to readers, so it's not anywhere near as terrible as setting for me. Things to work on, as one can always improve.
Oh yeah, and fight scenes. I cringe in embarrassment at the ones in To Glimpse, yet they grow like hydras in my outlines for that very series (and the tied aforementioned OC longfic). Irony...
Do I Like Foreign Language Dialogue?: Not really. Which is weird, as I normally don't mind it outside my writing. I think it's because I know it'd clash horribly with my specific writing style, as I am a perpetual overthinker lol.
First Fandom I Wrote For: Pikmin, actually. Never posted anything publicly, and never will, but let's just say I've been here for a while, fell off and into Len'en, and then ended up dragged back when I realized Pikmin 4 was about to Exist lol.
Favorite Fic I've Written: Man, I don't fucking know right now. I've written a lot, and there's a lot of variety (or at least as much as an angst lover can have). That, and I've never been good at picking favorites lol, even when I can focus on my writing lol. Call it a DIY day or something, because I can't think to choose right now.
Now to tag some bitches!: @hy- Oh wait, nil also got tagged lol. Nevermind...Hm...I'll just go ahead and tag @yabusame-houlen-official and @woodswolf because you guys are cool and I think this would be fun to inflict on you too.
AO3 Author Ask Game
I did this on my own because I saw this post but I'll tag people at the end because I wanna.
Total Number of AO3 Works: Not counting orphaned stuff or alts 92
Total AO3 Word Count: Not counting orphaned stuff or alts 95,899
Fandoms I've Written For: Len'en is the big one, but I've made efforts towards being a Homestuck author before, dabbled in Touhou, and for a few months back in 2022 I even thought I would abandon Len'en for Ciconia. Lol. Also made various one-shots for other fandoms. Oh yeah, and a Vocaloid Longfic I haven't orphaned for some reason. Probably memories.
Top 5 Fics By Kudos:
Mishaps At The Summer Festival (Love Live Superstar)
100 BPM (Vocaloid, this fic's placement here is very carried by it being in this fandom)
Realization (Len'en, very surprised a fic in this fandom managed to break top 3)
Massage (Project Sekai)
Dealing With Failure (Friday Night Funkin')
As you can see, 3/5 of these fics are one-shots for larger fandoms that I wrote in like once.
Do I Respond To Comments: Yes Yes Yes comment please I'm begging you
What Has The Most Angst-Ridden Ending?: Probably Unpleasant. Tbh I don't remember exactly what I wrote in here beyond the fact I put those tags and that age rating there for a reason but. I put those tags and that age rating there for a reason. Think this fic is part of the reason some random asked me if I was okay in uwom once. Fair question but I don't know you so like, do I traumadump on a stranger? Lie?
What Has The Happiest Ending?: The Three Fairies Charity Theatre. I wrote this one to be pure fluff and I think I succeeded <3 Reimu gets to have money and feel appreciated!!! And isn't that what we all want in life?
Have I Received Hate?: Not for my fics. Part of me is disappointed but I think it's better that way. I'll probably get some someday though.
Do I write smut? If so, what kind?: If fate wills it, you will be shown the way.
Do I Write Crossovers?: No. Sometimes I'm tempted but it usually just amounts to a different lens of character analysis on discord.
Have I Ever Had A Fic Translated?: No. Feel free though~
Have I Ever Co-Written A Fic?: A few round robins here and there.
A WIP I will never finish: So many. The one with the least hope compared to my desire however is that Ciconia one where Chloe and Gunhild went on a date "for reference". I don't remember shit about Ciconia 😭
Writing Strengths: According to others, I'm very good at conveying a character's emotion. I definitely agree. I also think my sense of humor is something to be proud of. Was also told that I'm good at making the world feel alive. I feel like I tend to skimp out on additional worldbuilding, but apparently readers will just eat up whatever scraps you give them. Or is it just that I'm in the "eating up whatever scraps you're given" fandom?
Writing Weaknesses: Ugh I hate writing fight scenes so much they suuuuuuck. And I keep repeating phrases too. I think I kill them all and then they fucking come back the next time I reread it.
Do I Like Foreign Language Dialogue?: Idk I've never written it.
First Fandom I Wrote For: Gravity Falls. Everything I posted publicly is buried in a dead Facebook group.
Favorite Fic I've Written: Unpaid Debts. I know I'm actively posting it right now so there's recency bias there, but trust me when I say I put my entire ass into this. I wanted Fumikado to have a breakdown, and like sure I could've just written a one-shot where they had a breakdown. But it wouldn't have been satisfying. I need to see the process; how their mental barriers break down so utterly that they can't cope their way around it anymore. After some failed attempts I finally concocted a scenario where this could happen, and I am so happy...
I haven't actually posted the part where they break down (and I won't for a little while) but I hope you enjoy it when the time comes.
Now to tag some bitches!:

That post that's like "stop writing characters who talk like they're trying to get a good grade in therapy" really blew the door wide open for me about how common it's become for a character's emotional intelligence to not be taken into consideration when writing conflict. I remember the first time I went to therapy I had such a hard time even identifying what I was feeling, let alone had the language to explain it to someone else. Of course there are plenty of people who've never been to therapy a day in their life who are in tune to their emotions. But even they would have some trouble expressing themselves sometimes. You have to take into account there are plenty of people who are uncomfortable expressing themselves and people who think they're not allowed to feel certain ways. It also makes for more interesting conflict to have characters with different levels of understanding.

Let me try this
So let the wheel decide your Japanese first-person pronoun
Note: descriptions may be inaccurate.
#maiden plays tumblr games#Watakushi#...At least that's a pronoun that doesn't make me look like *too* much an idiot for using#Still prefer its related Watashi though...

Creatives: Do you think someone could accurately psychoanalyze you by studying your works?
#maiden plays tumblr games#yep#all of my works#while rather distant and abstract from my own perspective.#do tend to deal with themes I find in my own life#that's why all my longfic ideas are so messy#they're kinda lowkey me and I roll with it#(don't worry#I'm nowhere near as bad as Olimar is in To Be irl#I'm stressed but I live#it's best described as an attempt to internalize change on my end)#(I've never coped well with change good or bad regardless of if I want it or not)

harry dubois would end death note in one episode. he'd be unkillable bc he has no fucking idea what his name is and then he'd go drink driving and accidentally run light over and the killings would mysteriously stop

Expanding a thought from a conversation this morning:
In general, I think "Is X out-of-character?" is not a terribly useful question for a writer. It shuts down possibility, and interesting directions you could take a character.
A better question, I believe, is "What would it take for Character to do X?" What extremity would she find herself in, where X starts to look like a good idea? What loyalties or fears leave him with X as his only option? THAT'S where a potentially interesting story lies.
In practice, I find that you can often justify much more from a character than you initially dreamed you could: some of my best stories come from "What might drive Character to do [thing he would never do]?" As long as you make it clear to the reader what the hell pushed your character to this point, you've got the seed of a compelling story on your hands.
#helpful writing advice#*yes*#*exactly*#It's the “how” I find intriguing#How do we get generally kind characters to take monstrous actions or vice versa?#that's what's intriguing#...in the hands of a writer who knows what they're doing at least lol
