“Impure Souls”: Devilkin

Last post I promised an explanation of devil-kin and human-demon symbiotic relationships, so here is my short and concise explanation. 

Demonic parasitism is the process in which a demon feeds on the soul of a human host. This happens forcibly without the consent of the host. But hosts are granted the unique cursed magic and are branded with the sigil of the demon inside them. These unfortunate souls are called devil-kin. They only make up less than 2.5% of the population, but they’re heavily stigmatized across the globe. And they don’t live very long, with an average lifespan of 48 years. Little is known about why demonic parasitism happens, but the general public believe demons attach themselves to humans who have impure souls.

Now, I want to rant a bit about Ren and Tsubaki’s magic. 

I talked a bit about Ren’s magic in my last post but I changed some things up, but it’s nothing major. Ren is bound to the demon Caim. A little background, Caim is a demon that appears in the Ars Goetia as a great president of Hell. He’s often associated with the biblical figure Cain, the first murderer. And I used that little tidbit as inspiration for Ren’s character and magic. Ren’s strength, speed and durability are enhanced by the desire to kill or mutilate. I removed the blood drinking part from their powers because I just thought it was unnecessary and changed the circumstances of their bloodlust, but that’s all. 

Now Tsubaki. Tsubaki’s bound to the demon Glasya-Labolas, another great president of Hell. Glasya-Labolas is said to incite manslaughter, bloodshed and homicides. So naturally I gave Tsubaki the power to manipulate blood. Tsubaki can manipulate his and other peoples blood, though only if it’s outside the body. He can’t do anything crazy like make someone’s blood clot until they die, but he can change the shape and state of matter of blood allowing him to create melee weapons and projectiles. Usually when he uses his magic he creates blood projectiles in the shape of flower petals. It’s a reference to his namesake and also I just think it would look interesting.

♱Ren & Tsubaki♱

This is a small doodle I drew a year ago of my two original characters Ren Onidzuka (left) and Tsurugi "Tsubaki" Akase (right). I also drew them in my other post for goretober day I. Ren and Tsubaki are both assassins and devilkin. For context, in my oc lore devilkin are humans who have symbiotic (parasitic) relationships with demons. I'll probably do a separate post about how demonic parasitism works because it's a lot, but it's not important right now.

Ren Onidzuka's devilkin ability, bloodlust, gives them strength, speed and durability beyond human capabilities with the cost of an insatiable thirst for human blood. Ren's bloodlust is triggered by strong emotions so they try to maintain a calm and passive demeanor as to not maul everyone around them. Sometime Ren even has Tsubaki sedate them if he think they're getting too "excited". Upon first impression most people think Ren is a bit uncanny because of their insincere emotions and clearly disturbed psyche. But outside of bloodlust they're fairly harmless. And they're unwavering to the people they support. Being one of my strongest and most intelligent original characters, Ren is a useful and loyal ally.

Tsurugi Akase, or Tsubaki as Ren calls him, because of his red hair. For anyone who doesn't know Japanese, tsubaki is the Japanese word for camellia, a flower that's usually red or pink in color. Camellias are symbols of strength against all odds and are also associated with samurai. On first impressions he is fairly intimidating because his imposing height and build or his sour attitude. Though, despite that he's oddly charismatic. In part because of his leaderships skills. Tsurugi is decisive, strategic and no non-sense. He wants to complete every mission as efficiently as possible while keeping his teammates in one piece.

If it's not clear in the art Ren and Tsubaki are "spouses", though they aren't legally married. Out of the two Ren is the more affectionate. Tsubaki often struggles with sentimentality, but he does love Ren and reciprocates their affection.

✥ I recently got into fighting games. I mainly play ggst and kof. In Strive I main Testament (and Bridget, because I’m basic). In kof my main is usually Kyo or Iori (except for when I play kof XIII then it’s Ash). I play Skullgirls sparingly. I mainly fight with Valentine and Squiggly.

✥ I’ve also recently got into Resident Evil. But I’ve only played RE2r and RE0 so far. 

✥ Fighting games and Resident Evil are my two main interests, but I have minor interests I dapple in occasionally, like animangas, such as Death Note and Monster, visual kei, mainly Plastic Tree, history, architecture, psychology, and mythology, especially occultism. 

✥ As for hobbies, I like, drawing, writing, especially horror, playing guitar, listening to music, playing video games, reading and studying languages (中文 + 日本語).
