this blog is all about the amazing Maisie, a sulcata tortoise who is no longer a baby! her birthday is february 14. she belongs to lesbian-nerd and mouthspiders, who frequently forget to post things here. they are some pretty crazy people who dedicate an entire section of the living room to a 5 inch tortoise, so you know, they're pretty cool.

so i sometimes forget this blog exists and do everything on my main... sorry

IT IS DONE! actually it’s about done, I still need to do a few random things, and I’m definitely thinking about selling her box and building a different, more accessible box. going to get some tortoise-safe plants and decorate accordingly. I took video of her first outing and i’ll post that asap. she’s so cute and I’m really proud that this turned out as well as it did with as few tools as I have.
anyway here is picspam of the process, along with my weirdo straight roommate I hope you enjoy

I really love ur blog however one thing that worries me.. is that big glass tank maisie's current habitat?
That was her winter habitat and i'm well aware that tortoises are not good for glass tanks. She is moving into a large home-made wooden tortoise table soon. If she had been in anything but that glass tank, she would have been subject to temperatures of 50* or less at night. Our apartment was very poorly insulated.
i understand and appreciate your worry, but understand that i didn't just rush out and get a tortoise because i thought she was cute, i have done years of research and have had tortoises for a time before.

I have a baby sulcata named Henry. He is about nine months old and hasn't really started to grow. When did Maisie start growing?
Maisie started growing almost as soon as we got her. We picked her up in March and she could fit in my palm and was roughly the size of a ping-pong ball. I drive truck so I’m gone for a month or so at a time and when I came home in August I noticed she was getting visibly bigger, so we took a comparing photo. Now she doesn’t fit in my fist anymore. She’s also a mover and can cross the living room in a startlingly short amount of time for how little her legs are.
Do you have a UV bulb, and are you feeding him a variety of fresh greens? We have pellets for Maisie but she doesn’t like eating them. She will if she’s really hungry but otherwise she covers them in sand. I know that, without proper UV lighting, most reptiles will be stunted in growth. We bought the desert reptile UV bulb and fixture for, i believe, $35 at Petco. It’s the best deal unless you already have a fluorescent bulb fixture.
