what got me about this episode was milchik just staring at natalie after she announced the call was over, clearly waiting for her to drop the act or say something about how backhanded this ‘gift’ was. and she just. keeps on smiling. i don’t know if on her end it’s fear that someone might still be listening or that the luman ethos has become so ingrained in her that she sticks by it as much as she can. but her smile even falters for a moment and she just looks so scared. like that was the most terrifying moment in the episode for me. you can never drop the act.

if you're an outie in the severance universe and you're a smoker does that mean your innie is just constantly on edge and miserable and craving something they can't even put a name to because they've never experienced it? if you drink too much on a weeknight does your innie just have to suffer the headache and nausea of a hangover without knowing where it came from?? if you have tattoos on parts of your body that are always covered by the lumon dress code, does your innie just walk around not knowing about them? what do you do if you get a hickey?? do you think any innies have ever gotten naked in the bathroom just to see the entirety of the body that they're not allowed to own???

Like Outie Irving assumes his Innie is just as radically anti-Lumon as he is. He assumes his hatred of Lumon is something ingrained in his personality! That's why he stays up at night drinking coffee and making paintings, because he hopes that when his innie dreams about the testing floor, he'll say "okay bet" and start exploring. That's what Outie Irving would do, after all. But he miscalculated! His hatred of Lumon isn't inherent--- his desire for meaning and art and spirituality is inherent. That's what his hatred for Lumon is built on. But in a world where there's no meaning outside of Lumon propaganda, of COURSE his innie would become ridiculously devoted to the company.

And Helena!! She is the corporation, that's her whole identity. She presumably assumed that Helly would be just as pro-Lumon as she is. But she miscalculated too! Her devotion to the company isn't inherent, her headstrong and entitled nature is what's inherent! And in a world where she's denied any agency whatsoever, that manifests as rebellion.

It's the same dynamic flipped on its head. They both sent their innies in there with opposite intentions--- one to take down the company, one feed the company's expansion--- only to realize that rebellion and devotion aren't inherent characteristics. Their innies have become the exact opposite of their outie selves, while still being exactly the same!! Because even though your personality is inherent, the values you hold are determined circumstantially. OUGH IT'S SO GOOD.

Actually so obsessed with how much juice there is in this episode, like the fact that choosing to become severed basically brands you as unhireable anywhere else because 1. the ethics and optics of it are so controversial to people 2. outties essentially have no discernible skills that would look good on a resumé because they aren't the ones who actually work, a major cost of the convenience that the procedure offers

Which means they are really only employable by Lumon. They truly do sell their soul to the company store.
