update 1/8
I’ve been gone for break, last semester was... a lot haha. so I decided to just let myself go for a bit.
in other news, I’m torn between how I want to handle my main villain. She was originally a woman and I have already built a ton of connections between her and other characters, but I’m wondering if she should be a man. So I’m going to make a little pro con list here for now, and see if it helps at all.
cons:
I already made her relationship with her sister surround the idea of two very similar people going through similar circumstances handling a similar trauma differently. Would making her a man change too much?
she also has a toxic “mother-daughter” relationship with another character, and I find that dynamic important for their character arcs and worry it might be too different if she was a man or if they both were male
female villains kick ass
I'd have to do a lot more redesigning
I want more female characters to be problematic and harsh, I don’t see that enough
pros:
her being problematic might be taken the wrong way by my audience/might fuel hatred from an unintended audience
I feel like I could tell a different story and make a point/theme stronger if she was a man
my story is very much a reflection of the world I see around me, and her actions would have a lot more meaning if she were a man (in this context)
her villain-y name is “El raton robadientes” so having her have male pronouns would just flow better
her toxic mother daughter relationship could be a toxic father son one, and I could make a stronger point using it
since the daughter/possible son character is the love interest of my trans boy protagonist, I’d have an opportunity to include more diversity in my story without having to change their cute backstory

If you wanted to put this shot in a solarpunk movie the producer would probably tell you it was a little too on the nose.

no, listen, when I say I want to integrate more specific solarpunk stuff in my life, i don’t mean to ask for yet again new “aesthetic” clothes that now you have to buy or make to show your support of the movement (screw that i’m consuming enough as it is), or more posts about impossible house goals, or whatever, I’m asking you what my options to build a portable and eco friendly phone charger are, im asking you viable tiny-appartment edible plants growing tricks on a budget,  im asking tips to slow down when my mind and society tell me im not fast enough, i don’t need more rich art nouveau amateurs aesthetics or pristine but cold venus project, okay, i know i should joins associations where I am tho i’m constantly on the move, thanks for that, just, you know, can we get a bit more practical ??? how do I hack my temporary flat into going off the grid for the time i’m here

idk if anyone will find this useful, but this is how i go about planning my stories. i mostly write fantasy, so that’s what this is most applicable to. but it could work with other genres too.
so there’s three major components to a story: the characters, the plot, and the world. creating them individually is the easy part, but they all connect and affect each other in different ways. (like you can’t have a character who loves peaches and eats them every day if they live a peasant in a region that doesn’t grow peaches, for example.)
so i created a cheat sheet to help connect all three components together.
1) the world creates the characters.
this is related to the peach example above. the characters should be a direct result of the environment they grew up in and the environment they currently live in.
2) the characters are limited by the world.
also related to the peaches. characters can’t do anything outside of what the rules of their surroundings and universe allow, such as eating peaches when they’re not available. this also applies for magic users. they can’t have unlimited magic, so keep in mind what you want out of both the characters and the world when creating magic systems.
3) the characters carry the plot.
we’ve all heard it before: “bad characters can’t carry a good plot. good characters can carry a bad plot.” but we all like a good plot anyway. try to make sure you’re not giving your characters too heavy or too light of a plot to carry.
4) the plot pushes the characters.
if nothing in the plot happens, your characters will remain static forever. if you struggle with plots, try starting with what character development you want to happen, then go from there.
5) the plot depends on the world.
you can’t overthrow the evil government if there isn’t one. think of what your world needs most and what your plot is centered around, and fit those two together.
6) the world is changed by the plot.
even if your plot is centered around something most of your world would call “insignificant”, the world will still experience some change from the plot. either the evil government will be gone, or maybe that one teacher is now way more careful about keeping an eye on the test key. either way, the world will be different from now on.
final note: usually people will be able to write one or two of the components with ease, but don’t know where to go from there. i personally can’t write plots, but thinking this way has really helped me actually make a story out of the world and characters because i looked at what i needed from what i had. i really hope this can help you too! happy writing!
tl;dr this is a cheat sheet to help anyone who struggles with writing one or two of what i consider the three major components to a story.

update 12/2
I’ve started practicing with drawing my protags and... it’s been too long. I literally don’t remember how to draw Pippin haha
In other news, I only have about 2 weeks left of school, so I’ll be planning out which characters I’ll make posts about over winter break.

Guys, if you want to be a good artist and storyteller you need to absorb other media and influences beyond popular comics and movies and video games. Hell, even beyond visual art. Read novels, science articles, history books. Listen to podcasts, watch documentaries. Dip into different disciplines. Explore stuff outside your everyday. What you create and the pool of ideas you can pull out of is expanded by the knowledge you gain. Don’t do yourself a disservice by limiting your library. You never know when some weird shit you read about mushrooms could end up inspiring you or helping you solve a design/story problem.
