Her first instinct is to snort. Never once in her life has she ever been ashamed of being a vampire. An apex predator. An animal on top of the food chain. She revels in it, delights in every aspect of her vampiric condition and has never once regret it.

Before she can open her mouth to comment however it closes with the realization that a vampire is not the label he's talking about.

She want's to argue, and say she isn't ashamed of being a survivor.

But there are times where she wonders if it was all worth it. Or if it will ever be worth it. What she's fighting so hard to survive for. Love. Stefan. And if she never gets it? If she never gets her happy ending would any of this have been worth it? All the friends shes buried? All the people she's turned her back on, or fed to the wolves just to escape the same fate?

Yea I've done some horrible things to survive, but unlike you precious Elena- I don't turn it off. I deal with it.

It's not that it never bothers her, it does, often and a lot but she's learned to keep it background noise. Taught herself that survival has always been brutal and messy and that's just life. If they wanted it more they would have played smarter, tried harder, fought with everything they had. Like she has since 1492.

Katherine leans over to toss another stick into the fire, glancing over at Daniel fast asleep by the fire. She can't go back on her words now, not after telling these boys since day one that being a survivor is a badge of honor....

Still, for him to have said anything? It means he already knows the things she never said out loud.

"Shouldn't you be getting some sleep too?"

She doesn't shoot him down, but it's not a conversation she wants to have right now.

Katherine leaned to her right and grabbed the other blanket to toss at him with a small smirk.

For a moment she watched Sean start to settle in. He's never forced her to talk about the things she didn't want to. He's never asked for more than he was offered. He's a good kid.

"Hey." She waits for his gaze to meet hers before she finishes her sentence. "Thanks."

It's simple, but it's more than he usually gets from her. A show of good faith that what he says to her does matter, even if on the barest of levels. She appreciates him.

There's a leak in her information highway. Someone has been dripping tidbits about her into the ring of people she's avoiding. Katherine is smart, shes capable, and she isn't one for lose ends. When she finds it? You bet your ass she'll make an example of them without blinking. The vampire is starting with the newer contacts she's made. The vampires eager to know the legendary miss Katherine Pierce, and the ones dumb enough to try and make a name for themselves by betraying her.

She isn't sure it's him. That's why she's here investigating.

Katherine's jaw clenched as she looked away from him.

It was less that she didn't trust him, and more that she didn't trust how serious he was about his standing. His duty to the family. Her secret, it wasn't something silly like she's not the age she said she was, or her hair is naturally a different colour. She's not taller because of silly shoes. Her secret is one that really did matter, one that she knew was dangerous to herself, her position, and his view of her.

Her ability to keep his interest, his hand, his love.

"And why must you be privy to all my secrets?" It's only half said in an accusatory tone. "Are there not secrets you keep from me in that head of yours? Locked tight behind those lips?"

Her gaze met his and as much as she wanted it to seem dangerous, to ward him off, it was laced with insecurity and fear more than anything.

"A woman is allowed her mystery. It's especially part of my charm is it not?"

Katherine immediately jumps to her list of sin's for Vik. It's a long list that starts with that time she stole the last christmas treat when they were five and ends with the abandonment for five hundred years.

She could run through them, sure, but Vik knows how she is. Vik knows the choices she's made regardless of the reasoning.

"Between you and Natalia where exactly would you like me to start with my answer? Because out of the three of us I have the disloyal reputation, and I'm the only one of us that hasn't betrayed family. I think at this point it's just which one of you is fighting for first."

Katherine let out a scoff and crossed her arms.

"If you did your research then you'd know she betrayed me first. She went behind my back and saddled up with the counsel to aid in their vampire hunt. The compass they used to hunt us down? That was Emily." She hissed.

"She got my friend Pearl caught and thrown in the tomb. I never put Pearls name on a list. That was the compass' doing. And they got that from HER. So yes. Nadia. I did sell her out, because she was more than just a loose end she betrayed me and all of my other friends." Honestly she only cared about Pearl and Anna, but still it had ended poorly for them too.

"Had she not done that I probably wouldn't have sold her out. Not that it matters to you, but that really hurt, because I DID consider her a friend. I protected her. Then I found out she had hated me the whole time. Do you know what that feels like? To think you found someone you can call a friend and they just so easily turn on you? Because I do. It happens to me a lot actually. So you want to know WHY I don't blink when I step over bodies? It's because they never blinked when betraying me. I wasn't ALWAYS like this. It just got to the point where I no longer could afford to believe anyone was ever my friend. It got to the point where I had to just expect them to turn on me, because that's always the case Nadia."

Theres a lot more emotion in her voice than she wants there to be right now. Definitely wasnt a fan of the way her eyes were watering.

"You clearly haven't had the same experience in life, and you know what? I'm happy for you. Because it fucking hurts to always be waiting for someone to fuck you over. Not a single day since 1492 have I had any real peace. Do you know what its like to sit in the back of your mind through every friendship, and every happy moment and remind yourself that this wont last? That someone or something is going to take it from you- EVERY TIME? Because I do Nadia. It started with YOU, and it hasn't stopped since."

Katherine swallowed hard, very clearly fighting the intensity of the emotional reaction she was having.

"So forgive me for having a different definition than you, but I've only got what ive had to work with. And it's all nice and swell to pretend like I'm cold hearted and it means nothing to me, just another tally in the betrayal book- but it is me pretending. Because it does hurt. The only real friend I've ever had by YOUR standards was Pearl. And Emily got her killed. So judge me all you want but she deserved what she got. She killed more people that night than me."

    nadia’s eyes narrowed, her gaze fixed on the bracelet glinting on katherine’s wrist. while it had interested her how katheirne got her daylight jewelry (and it does indeed surprise her that she apparently got her first daylight jewelry not even 200 years ago), she couldn't help but freeze when she mentioned that emily (as in emily bennett) was a person katherine claimed to be her friend. "a friend?" nadia echoed, her voice low, edged with disbelief. "i’ve spent years piecing together your trail, my research says different. emily bennett, burned at the stake in 1864, after you let it slip to the founders’ council she was a witch." she leaned forward, her tone cutting. "if she was your friend, why’d you betray her like that? for survival?"

   "you call that friendship?" she asked, her voice steady but laced with hurt. "you got emily killed, katherine. that’s not what friends do. it’s … chilling, how you step over bodies to keep going and then have the nerve to befriend emily's anchestors." it was well known that katherine left no loose ends behind. katherine was also known to have had few friends. and to be honest, nadia isn't surprised at all. who would befriend a person who kills her friends?

   katherine’s justification made nadia scoff softly. "you say '‘i’m fucking nice,' but nice people don’t sell out those who help them. or am i wrong? you claim she made your first necklace, traveled with you in the 1850s, but then you let her die. that’s not giving back, that’s survival at any cost." her eyes flicked to katherine’s, searching for remorse, or some hint of realization. "i get it, you do what you have to. but it’s hard to hear you call that friendship when it ended with her ashes." || @malka-lisitsa

Katherine drops the heart in her hand to the ground, letting it lay there like a piece of trash before she steps over the body.

"Why won't you come home to me?"

"Because I don't have a home Elijah! Not really. Not a real one. I don't get a home I don't get a fairy tale romance I don't get happiness!!" Her tone is the hallmark tone of one of her spirals. She's blurring lines with her paranoia verses reality.

Katherine had spotted Klaus without warning way too close to Elijah's house, it had startled and scared her and she had fled in an instant.

To Elijah's credit Klaus probably stopped by unannounced, so it might not be on Elijah, but it had scared her all the same and she was now in an undisclosed location spiraling without Elijah to take her hands and ground her. Something they'd been working on. He'd talk her down from her spirals but it always worked better when he could ground her with touch enough to get her to actually listen.

"If I come back he's going to kill me, Elijah it's not SAFE."

Every once in a while Katherine get's triggered by a small thing in a big way and everything goes to hell. At least this time she's not blaming him, she isn't yelling at him. She's just spiraling.

"Why didn't tell me you were interested in this?" (nadia)

Katherine sat up quickly and turned off the t.v out of reflex. She felt like she was in trouble and reacted instinctively. Not that Nadia did anything to make her feel like that besides come out of no where.

So why the state of mind?

"I'm not really..." Katherine flipped the t.v back on and started watching "forged in fire" once more. A show about black smithing challenges. She let out a long sigh and moved over in case Nadia wanted to join her.

"Your grandfather was a black smith."

Ah, that makes sense, it reminds her of her father. That explains the "in trouble" mindset.

"When I was little, he sometimes took me to work with him. I'd sit in the corner really quiet and really still and watch him work. I remember it being really hot all the time because of the forge. It was neat to me, seeing the way he could bend metal to his will. Create something beautiful out of a hunk of something ordinary." Katherine stated.

"Forged in petrova fire! Hed always announce that when he finished a project. Like it was the mark of the finest craftsmanship. Like it meant something to anyone but him. And I guess me at the time. Before the glimmer wore off and I saw him for who he really was. A drunken asshole."

She reached for the glass of bourbon she had sitting on the side table and held it up like she was toasting. "Here's to family tradition."
