I can finally unveil this personal project! My comic version of chapter one of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, which I finally managed to get to shortly after SOTR came out. This was a unique project for me that I've been working on, on and off, for the past year or so. Lots and lots of fun, although I did mess up in some parts (typesetting :') ) and the limited color pallette was a unique challenge. Rest of the chapter under the cut! Hope you enjoy :)

Katniss conveniently leaving out who got the geese for Haymitch makes me think "but Peeta wanted them so badly" is her way of saying "I wanted them just as badly, but I'm not telling you"

I love that in Catching fire Katniss comes to the conclusion the other tributes are trying to keep Peeta alive because they must see how amazingly perfectly wonderful he is. When in actuality that’s just her having a crush and everyone else recognizing that if Peeta gets hurt Katniss will go fully feral and unhinged and probably try to kill everyone and then herself.

suzanne collins is such a genius... the cultural phenomenon of her series leading to the hanging tree house remixes, mockingjay being milked for two (bad) movies, the capitol-inspired makeup palettes, the halloween costumes, the explosion of the market for dystopia, the butchering of her characters and removal of disabilities, disfiguration, and racial tension + representation to sell more tickets, the extra gale scenes to fuel discourse, and the audience showing up to cinemas to watch what was pretty honestly marketed to them (the jacob vs edwardification of the symbolic love story and also to watch children fight to the death) it's just so ridiculously ironic i would say you can't write this shit, but she did write about it... in The Hunger Games published 2008

what makes Snow such a formidable villain within THG universe is that nothing he does was set in stone. there was no sense of inevitability about his actions and his brutality. Snow had enough perspective of poverty, capital cruelty, district hunger and not to mention his own arena experience’ and yet he actively chose at every moment to stray from natural goodness. its even more terrifying in the sense that he had the ability to care. Snow is not a mindless sociopath, he displays feelings to others such as sejanus, lucy grey and tigris but ultimately he will always choose himself. his ability to betray those he cared about in order yo advance himself makes him so much more than the stereotypical villain who is forced into his actions.

I catch a glimpse of myself on the television screen on the wall that’s airing my arrival live and feel gratified that I appear almost bored. Peeta Mellark, on the other hand, has obviously been crying and interestingly enough does not seem to be trying to cover it up. I immediately wonder if this will be his strategy in the Games. To appear weak and frightened, to reassure the other tributes that he is no competition at all, and then come out fighting. - "You know what my mother said to me when she came to say good-bye, as if to cheer me up, she says maybe District Twelve will finally have a winner. Then I realized, she didn’t mean me, she meant you!” bursts out Peeta. “Oh, she meant you,” I say with a wave of dismissal. “She said, ‘She’s a survivor, that one.’ She is,” says Peeta.

blood on the clocktower jargon/culture is really funny to me if you try to apply to real life. every claim of yours end with “but i could be drunk or poisoned”. people give each other three possible jobs they could be and are expected to provide fake info these potential jobs give. people go into the town square and immediately take turns juggling. people hurriedly throw their friends on the town guillotine just so they can have more time to speak before the day ends. going around confidently declaring“i’m looking for a virgin”. some poor guy waking up going “yeah guys i saw a widow last night :( just a scary spider outside my window”. no one in town trusts you because you didn’t pass the noble’s vibe check. you finally go fishing on day three to see what advice the fish will tell you. clockmakers hopping onto the guillotine begging for death.
