B.R.U.H.: Black Renditions of Universal Heroes (2016)
âThe following pages lend insight and inspiration into this philosophy, as these illustrations break down exactly what BRUH means: Black Renditions of Universal Heroes.Â
Youâll probably notice that all of them are women. I couldâve said heroine and you may ask why I donât use this word, but then Iâd have some questions for you.â

Markus Prime challenges the norm of illustrations often seen, by filling the disparity of black characters. His characters are constructed in a hyper reality setting and utilizes present day narratives from black culture. Born in Warren, Ohio and the son of military parents, Prime moved regularly to different areas within the United States and overseas. During each stay he would connect with those through his love for art and music.Â
Social media provided Markus a localized medium to visually communicate and remain connected with those he met on and offline. His expert use with markers and infectious personality has made his social handles a meeting place for art and culture lovers.Â

Lady of the Shards
It's great to see comics in different formats. I really like this little short 'Lady of the Shards' which follows the brief adventure of an acolyte and the Goddess she loves...

Celebrating Frederick Douglass
Art by Richie Pope
Frederick Douglass, a former slave and eminent human rights leader in the abolition movement, was the first black citizen to hold a high U.S. government rank.
Abolitionist leader Frederick Douglass was born into slavery in Talbot County, Maryland. He became one of the most famous intellectuals of his time, advising presidents and lecturing to thousands on a range of causes, including womenâs rights and Irish home rule. Among Douglassâ writings are several autobiographies eloquently describing his experiences in slavery and his life after the Civil War.
In addition to abolition, Douglass became an outspoken supporter of womenâs rights. In 1848, he was the only African American to attend the first womenâs rights convention at Seneca Falls, New York. Elizabeth Cady Stanton asked the assembly to pass a resolution stating the goal of womenâs suffrage. Many attendees opposed the idea. Douglass stood and spoke eloquently in favor, arguing that he could not accept the right to vote as a black man if women could not also claim that right. The resolution passed. Douglass would later come into conflict with womenâs rights activists for supporting the Fifteenth Amendment, which banned suffrage discrimination based on race while upholding sex-based restrictions.
Brilliant, heroic, and complex, Douglass became a symbol of his age and a unique voice for humanism and social justice. His life and thought will always speak profoundly to the meaning of being black in America, as well as the human calling to resist oppression. Douglass died in 1895 after years of trying to preserve a black abolitionistâs meaning and memory of the great events he had witnessed and helped to shape.
âDespite of it all, the Negro remains ⌠cool, strong, imperturbable, and cheerful.â
-Â Frederick Douglass, Speech on the Anniversary of Emancipation (1883)

Now you could say that we at MancsterCon get around a lot. You could say that weâre almost obsessed with encouraging cosplayers and artists to inspire each other over some rounds of mutually enjoyed cupcakes.
You could say that.
And youâd be right.
We were thrilled to be invited to host a Cosplay Sketch-off at the 2015 Doki-Doki festival and the weekend certainly didnât disappoint. Filled with drummers, martial artists, samurai warriors. There were even some of our MancsterCon alumni amongst the tables such as Brogan Coral, Mewa Chu and Nikki Kidura.
As part of the Doki-Doki festival, we actually held several sketch-offs with the last one as our grand final to determine the best of the best! Here are the winners with their respective cosplayers:
A huge thank you to Doki-Doki for inviting us â we look forward to doing many more. It was such a great event and had a wonderful atmosphere being filled with fans of Japanese culture, ancient and modern as well as some amazingly talented artists and cosplayers. Bring it on for 2017! :D
Got an event coming up? Want some fun comic-making workshops or a cosplay sketch-off of your own? Get in touch, weâd love to hear from you and weâre always up for hosting fun activities suitable for all ages :)
Taking it to the Doki Doki! Now you could say that we at MancsterCon get around a lot. You could say that we're almost obsessed with encouraging cosplayers and artists to inspire each other over some rounds of mutually enjoyed cupcakes.

Weâre massive fans of what they do and the quality of work their students produce is always off the charts amazing.
This monthâs sketch-off featured Luna Tsukino and Jennifer Lau as our special guest cosplayers and weâre always excited to have such great cosplayers model for our sketch-offs. Check out the photos from the event to get a good look at them pose their stuff! It was also great to see lots of students come along and join in â weâll bring even more cake next time!
If youâd like to get all the gossip first, why not follow us on Facebook to sign up at our sketch-offs and other events coming up. See you there!

Last weekend saw the Mancsters come out to play from our hideyholes to head on down to the Play Expo! Thatâs right, weâd been invited to hold a Cosplay sketch-off at one of the biggest independent gaming conventions in the UK and we were looking forward to it! Having attended previous shows, we were hyped up for a day of arcade games, tabletop competitions and amazing cosplay of course!
Special mention must go to the Dark Cleo crew with whom we shared a staging area. We were really impressed by their great performances â the choreography for the Street Fighter showdown was really cool and they put on such a wide range of events, from quizzes to martial arts demos that it was hard to get away.
For the Cosplay Sketch-off, we were lucky to have a few attendee cosplayers model for us, including the Catwalk winner, The Starlight Fairy as a spangly Princess Sarah, and the ever impressive Pipa Wolf as the Naga Siren. The winners were Giuseppa Barresi, Mewa Chu and Erin Dean, who all won free tables at MancsterCon 2015!

Thank you so much to Play Expo for having us and we look forward to doing similar events in the future :)
We were so excited by it, we even did a short vlog about it! Check it out and let us know what you enjoyed the most about the 2o14 Play Expo. Above all, follow us on Twitter for more updates about future events, or, if youâd like us to host a sketch-off at your show, why not get in touch? Weâre a friendly bunch! :D
